Don't need to see the full list to know in a heartbeat it's XTRMNTR, with Kid A close behind

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 18 November 2023 15:24 (two years ago)

Despite Apple Venus being one of my top favourite albums ever I give Wasp Star a lot less time of day. Perfectly fine record though, with some truly great songs (The Wheel and the Maypole, say) but also a few of their weakest (like Stupidly Happy).

The Hour of Bewilderbeast, Add Insult to Injury, Mwng, Lost Souls and Voodoo are my other favourites there.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 18 November 2023 15:27 (two years ago)

one of my top five* favourites oh yes

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 18 November 2023 15:27 (two years ago)

(Other personal '00 highlights: Fatboy Slim's Between the Gutter..., Echoboy's Volume One, The Fall's The Unutterable, FSA's Mirror, Madonna's Music, Graham Coxon's The Golden D, Saint Etienne's Sound of Water, Tom Zé's Jogos de armar, Charlie Watts Jim Keltner Project)

Not sure I'm gonna have Sigur Ros and Grandaddy as overrated when both Badly Drawn Boy and Primal Scream are in residence but nice list all the same!

Probably The For Carnation, Luomo or Godspeed for me.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 18 November 2023 15:34 (two years ago)

2000 is a total knockout singles year fwiw. But that's largely down to pop, garage, house, techno, trance etc. artists who don't quite have a knockout album. This is nothing unique to '00 of course but it feels quite pronounced this year compared to '99 or even '01 which have a lot more albums I adore.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 18 November 2023 15:38 (two years ago)

Aye, I was going to include the Artful Dodger album but it's really only the singles from it that are gems really

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 18 November 2023 15:42 (two years ago)

Not a great year for albums. Godspeed would be my pick here.

o. nate, Saturday, 18 November 2023 18:56 (two years ago)

Stankonia

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 November 2023 18:58 (two years ago)

I listened to Stankonia lately for the first time in years and its even better than I remembered. "BOB", an indisputable masterpiece.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 18 November 2023 19:53 (two years ago)

Gasoline Dreams is my shit, and I'll Call Before I Come

Radiohead and Electric Wizard honorable mentions

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 November 2023 20:04 (two years ago)

Are Machina and Fold Your Hands truly overrated? I don’t often see those cited as classics by fans of those bands (or recall them being rapturously received at the time).

low-sorbitol frootloop (morrisp), Saturday, 18 November 2023 20:27 (two years ago)

Yeah perhaps not. A lot of SP fans rate Machina though.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 18 November 2023 20:42 (two years ago)

Oh this is just 2000 what a good year in retrospective…

Could vote for any of these:

Clinic
Broadcast
Amon Tobin
Radiohead
St Germain
Badu
Gas
Clientele
Sea and Cake
Outkast
Max Tundra
Luomo
Electric wiz

Will probably choose between broadcast or clinic as those are the main ones I still play often.

Suburban Light

that's not my post, Saturday, 18 November 2023 21:09 (two years ago)

I went with Stankonia too. Just listed to it this past week, and it may be my favorite album of the '00s, never mind 2000.

birdistheword, Saturday, 18 November 2023 21:31 (two years ago)

*listened

birdistheword, Saturday, 18 November 2023 21:31 (two years ago)

mamas gun

everdose of cloverness (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 18 November 2023 23:14 (two years ago)

What an absolutely incredible list. What a great year and what great taste!

I listened to these a TON:

Add N to (X) - Add Insult to Injury
At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command
Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast
Deltron 3030 - s/t
Gas - Pop
Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Raise Your Skinny Fists…
Isolee - Rest
Jurassic 5 - Quality Control
Luomo - Vocalcity
Max Tundra - Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Outkast - Stankonia
Primal Scream - XTRMNTR
Radiohead - Kid A
The Avalanches - Since I Left You

So many records here sounded like "the future" and honestly some really hold up to that promise. Went with Max Tundra.

octobeard, Saturday, 18 November 2023 23:56 (two years ago)

Just noticed the honourable mentions and overrated pile...

Doves - Lost Souls
Amon Tobin - Supermodified

These are both classics! The Doves album hasn't aged well, but at the time it was literally therapy for me to listen to. Much love.

Sigur Ros didn't release a record in 2000 - Ágætis Byrjun came out in 99, and () 2002. The former is all time for me, and had it been on the list and released in 2000, I'd have voted for it.

octobeard, Sunday, 19 November 2023 00:01 (two years ago)

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Lambchop - Nixon
The Sea and Cake - Oui

these are the ones i still have in rotation in recent years, lots of others worth revisiting though

ciderpress, Sunday, 19 November 2023 00:19 (two years ago)

voting shouso strip but kid a, mama's gun and voodoo are all total classics. xtrmntr and and then nothing are both rather good tooo

A lot of SP fans rate Machina though.

it's very very few who consider it one of their best

ufo, Sunday, 19 November 2023 01:03 (two years ago)

Broadcast, and I can’t wait for the demos collection in 2024

Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Sunday, 19 November 2023 01:19 (two years ago)

Number of albums heard: 11

Favourite: I'll say Elliot Smith since OutKast and Radiohead are bound to do well

Least-favourite: Clinic (loved Walking With Thee, went back to this and only liked "Goodnight Georgie"); most overrated, though, is Eminem

Nicest surprise: XTC

Unheard, but most want to hear: At The Drive-In (I've loved "One-Armed Scissor" since it came out), D'Angelo, maybe Sonic Youth

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 19 November 2023 02:09 (two years ago)

Too many good ones here, but I went for Dopethrone. I've never heard a better stoner/doom album and I don't think it's possible to make one

The For Carnation or Don Cab

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 20 November 2023 10:45 (two years ago)

The Doves album hasn't aged well, but at the time it was literally therapy for me to listen to.

Agree on this. Recently put together some tracks of 2000 and 2001 playlists and was struck by how more I now like Elbow's 'Newborn' and 'Powder Blue' compared to the singles from 'Lost Souls' (although still love a bunch of Doves deep cuts).

nashwan, Monday, 20 November 2023 10:46 (two years ago)

Add Insult To Injury is Add N To (X)'s New Jersey

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 20 November 2023 11:35 (two years ago)

There should be a great compilation of That Sort of Thing*. Add N (to) X, Plone, Position Normal, Echoboy, Capitol K, Octant, Self

*a group of bands with not much in common beyond their place in time and their in-some-sense adjacency to the Beta Band and/or Broadcast

you can see me from westbury white horse, Monday, 20 November 2023 11:50 (two years ago)

and with noticeable crossover in their small fanbases

you can see me from westbury white horse, Monday, 20 November 2023 11:52 (two years ago)

Logic says Stankonia or Voodoo, but playcount says Smog or Yo La Tengo.

Cow_Art, Monday, 20 November 2023 12:27 (two years ago)

Faves at the time not already mentioned:

David Holmes - Bow Down To The Exit Sign
Etienne De Crecy - Tempovision
Laurent Garnier - Unreasonable Behaviour

nashwan, Monday, 20 November 2023 12:48 (two years ago)

Stankonia, enjoying a well earned renaissance in my household via the kids

Iain Macdonald, Monday, 20 November 2023 13:14 (two years ago)

voted for supreme clientele

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Monday, 20 November 2023 13:38 (two years ago)

Not a year has gone by where I haven’t listened to Since I Left You, so that one.

Chris L, Monday, 20 November 2023 13:49 (two years ago)

Gave Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons a spin recently and still love it, so I voted for that. I blind-bought that album in the early 2000s thanks to the Guy Picciotto connection and loved it so much. I remember being happily surprised on more than one occasion during that era to stroll into a random shop and hear tracks from this playing. It was kinda "in the air."

I missed the whole [Rick and Morty connection](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hucNlh9-Fik) until I finally gave that show a go earlier this year. But last week, they released even more For the Damaged Coda!

guess i'm that guy who will always vote for sade, but lovers rock sailing just over supreme clientele.

ꙮ (map), Monday, 20 November 2023 13:55 (two years ago)

2000 was the first year I ever tried making a "best albums of the year" list, and the Yo La Tengo was easily my #1 at the end of the year. Still think it's great, but Supreme Clientele is the one that's really stuck with me more than any of these others (i.e. the one I've listened to most frequently in the past several years, the one I've listened to most recently, the one I think about the most), so that's my #1 now. Kid A probably my #2, out of these options. (Loud Family's Attractive Nuisance is my true #1 or #2 of the year though.)

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Monday, 20 November 2023 16:36 (two years ago)

this is mama's gun without hesitation.

"another slice of death, please." (Austin), Monday, 20 November 2023 16:39 (two years ago)

Kid A was always my no.1 for 2000 and it is the album that kind of defines the year but Suburban Light is the one Ive listened to most throughout the years.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 20 November 2023 16:41 (two years ago)

I think I have a best of 2000 list myself. Should I post it here Mike?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 23 November 2023 11:08 (two years ago)

Go for it! I'm sure there's more metal than what's on my list

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 23 November 2023 11:23 (two years ago)

It's a list I made at the time in 2000 and I wasn't listening to metal as much by then (it was about 2002/3 when I fully got back into it) It was the year I got napster and I could finally check out music I read about but couldn't hear/afford.

There's stoner rock and a bit of metal on it though but It's exactly what I was listening to at the time. I discovered more from that year as the decade went on of course in case people wonder why its missing some things.

You should.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 23 November 2023 13:32 (two years ago)

co-sign, good album

i wish i had my list saved. it was probably exactly what ya'll would guess: stankonia, mama's gun, like water for chocolate, etc etc

"another slice of death, please." (Austin), Thursday, 23 November 2023 16:09 (two years ago)

I voted for Stankonia already, but FWIW, The Friends of Rachel Worth is excellent and shouldn't be overlooked by anyone who loves the Go-Betweens - a more-than-worthy addition to their body of work.

birdistheword, Thursday, 23 November 2023 16:40 (two years ago)

XTRMNTR. A terrifying, prescient vision of the nightmare that is the 21st century. I love every second of it

beamish13, Thursday, 23 November 2023 16:45 (two years ago)

back to this and only liked "Goodnight Georgie"); most overrated, though, is Eminem

― Halfway there but for you

Oh :( I love “Walking with thee” but I absolutely love this one and shaped a lot of my taste for the following decade. Granted I was 15 when it came out but it has so many cool psych/garage/krautrock nods thrown in… I thought they were one of the coolest indie bands at the time.

Oops erased text but my post is regarding Clinic

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 23 November 2023 16:56 (two years ago)

A lot of albums I love in the original list but here’s some missing personal favorites:

- Pole - 3
- Moodymann - forevernevermore
- Mirah - you think it’s like this but really it’s like this
- Bonobo - animal magic
- Françoiz Breut - vingt a trente mille jours
- The Mercury Program - From the Vapor of Gasoline
- Acid Mothers & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - La Nòvia
- The Third Eye Foundation - Little Lost Soul
- Happy Apple - Body Popping, Moon Walking, Top Rocking
- Ken Vandermark - Burn the Incline
- Spaceways Incorporated - Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra & Funkadelic

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 23 November 2023 17:10 (two years ago)

Oh yeah Labradford too

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 23 November 2023 17:20 (two years ago)

- Acid Mothers & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - La Nòvia

Oh yeah, I have that one. I possibly didn't hear it until 2001 though. I think I have that Pole album too.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 23 November 2023 18:33 (two years ago)

Loud Family's Attractive Nuisance is my true #1 or #2 of the year though.

Meant to mention this record, though there's some dimming of vitality or spark in the last couple of Scott Miller's records that wouldn't allow me to rate it that highly; the craft and the inventiveness are both there, but the spirit is heavy.

Oh :( I love “Walking with thee” but I absolutely love this one and shaped a lot of my taste for the following decade. Granted I was 15 when it came out but it has so many cool psych/garage/krautrock nods thrown in… I thought they were one of the coolest indie bands at the time.

Maybe I found the earlier Clinic record more manic or frenetic and liked them better when they were a little more measured?
