UK people - where are you located?

apologies if this thread already exists or if it belongs on ILE but i thought it'd probably be alright here.

me and my partner just moved back to birmingham from reading. i've found myself dislocated from a lot of my friends after moving around the country for the last few years and i'm keen to meet some new people, and since music's just about my favourite thing to talk about i thought it'd be worth asking here. i also just thought it'd be interesting to find out where some of you guys are.

:)

I’m also in Cambridge and have been for 4 decades, excepting 5 years in Brighton & a year or so in querétaro (but I was a baby then); will probably still be here when I die. Hell I’m in the fitzwilliam museum right now

Back in my home town of Nottingham. Lived in Brighton for almost a decade and can say that the Brighton & surrounding area ilx0rs are the greatest.

Birmingham's great for gigs and music stuff but I guess as you said "moved back" then you already know that.

I was just thinking does Joe Orton have a blue plaque in Leicester and found this, it's awkwardly placed on a bungalow that was built over the site of the Saffron estate council house he grew up in.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Tuesday, 5 December 2023 09:27 (nine months ago) link

Reminds me that Joe Meek's plaque, which is 5 minutes away from where I live, was covered up by an estate agent's sign for years, it might still be. Also Orton & Halliwell's gaff is a short bus journey away.

yeah I visited that sometime in the mid 90's, probably after watching Prick Up Your Ears for the nth time.

... and Kenneth Williams' dad's barber shop, which Kenny lived above, is 5 minutes from where I work. Connections, connections...

my nearest one is 18th century priest and scientific dabbler Revd John Michell "he experimented on magnetism and astronomy, also making a torsion balance to weigh the world" !

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Tuesday, 5 December 2023 10:29 (nine months ago) link

But the true “father” of the black hole concept was a humble 18th century English rector named John Michell–a man so far ahead of his scientific contemporaries that his ideas languished in obscurity, until they were re-invented more than a century later.

Middlesex (I'm fighting the Surrey stain) and Hampshire. Have also lived in Australia, Switzerland and Finland.

Side q: how long does one have to have lived in a place for it to be considered part of yer narrative? Or does it involve, say, paying for lodgings, or having a job while you were there?

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 5 December 2023 16:19 (nine months ago) link

Bristol, used to live in North Hertfordshire.

mark e - we never met up! I'm very conscious of this. I'm actually putting on a night in Stroud in mid-January if it interests you at all
