let's talk about punk bands/artists and their music, especially new releases!

alpine static, Monday, 1 January 2024 10:37 (one year ago)

these days, it is only appropriate to start off with a new album from a band out of the fertile scene in Melbourne, Australia:

Split System's Vol. II, out in February on Goner (U.S.) and Drunken Sailor (EU)
Classic, straight-ahead garage-punk, played fast, bouncy and super catchy.

alpine static, Monday, 1 January 2024 10:47 (one year ago)

also, new full-length out Friday on Sorry State Records from Cleveland weirdos Pulsating Gore:

No announcement yet but based on a what I've seen online Uranium Club should have a new LP this year, finally.

Jouster, Tuesday, 2 January 2024 05:49 (one year ago)

1000% on board with this

https://www.spin.com/2024/01/second-wave-egg-punk/

(Uranium Club get a mention there, I gotta check them out)

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 7 January 2024 19:24 (one year ago)

also I was told via a band member that there is a new Skull Cult EP coming in 2024, they are so good

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Sunday, 7 January 2024 19:29 (one year ago)

Uranium Club is a very good (and fun) live band, would love a chance to get to see them again. I think this album is a pretty good start if you are looking to dive in:

grandavis, Monday, 8 January 2024 14:20 (one year ago)

they are great, weirdly not very active even here in Minneapolis I've only seen em a couple times

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 January 2024 14:27 (one year ago)

wow this Snooper album from 2023 is some of the greatest shit I have ever heard, also linked in that Spin article

https://snooper7.bandcamp.com/album/super-sn-per

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Wednesday, 10 January 2024 15:56 (one year ago)

yeah, they totally rule

i saw some "real" punks slagging them in the comments on that story - on social, the story itself doesn't have comments - proving exactly the points Snooper was trying to make, of course.

alpine static, Wednesday, 10 January 2024 20:08 (one year ago)

i get why people like the Snooper, it’s just not my thing.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 15 January 2024 19:21 (one year ago)

good comp here w/ lots of those bands from that SPIN article, plus others that are in the same vein:

alpine static, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 19:16 (one year ago)

thanks, I snagged that, note that you have to make a donation to a separate organization and then email the receipt for a DL code

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 19:43 (one year ago)

and that cassettes are in the work from a handful of different labels

alpine static, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 19:45 (one year ago)

oh nice, would (re)buy

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 19:46 (one year ago)

Pyrex is a cool band. Nice folks as well.

grandavis, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 19:47 (one year ago)

They (Pyrex) are playing Total Punk Records' two-day festival in Portland in May, along with Itchy & the Nits, Retail Simps, Human Eye, Sick Thoughts, Tyvek and more:

https://www.instagram.com/p/C1gYCAFO5EK/

It's sold out (venue holds 200ish), but mentioning here in case anyone wants to make the effort.

alpine static, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 20:39 (one year ago)

that's cool, I am very close but not gonna try for soldout tix

go Portland!

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 20:56 (one year ago)

that Palestine benefit comp has a bunch of great bands I had never heard of, already hooked on HÅGØL and Busted Head Racket

yeah, Billiam is sort of a baby/rising folk hero in that scene ... i think he said he has a full-length coming out on ETT this year, i would not be surprised if he *relatively speaking* blows up a bit

alpine static, Tuesday, 16 January 2024 22:40 (one year ago)

yep I am currently blasting this excellent thing he did with Busted Head Racket

i went to an actual punk house show a couple weeks ago, first time in ages

Cleveland's The Missed headlined, really fun stuff, especially love the parts when this speeds up, she can really play, other songs she was doing almost J. Mascis stuff, lots of hooks

flopson, Wednesday, 24 January 2024 23:40 (one year ago)

I know I repped them in last year's thread, but just found out that they did this live studio session cassette last year that really shows how tight and fucking RIPPPING they are

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Wednesday, 24 January 2024 23:49 (one year ago)

They also stan Henry Flynt on their merch site, which is very much "my team" shit

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Wednesday, 24 January 2024 23:50 (one year ago)

Cherry Cheeks!! love this dinky synth Screamers-influenced shit.

They are playing in Portland in early March with Prison Affair, Nick Normal (?), and The Gobs, I am prob going

dead precedents (sleeve), Saturday, 27 January 2024 20:39 (one year ago)

me too! The Gobs are maybe my favorite punk band of the past three years. when they were added (at first the bill was PA, CC, NN and Puerta Negra), it became a must for me.

alpine static, Saturday, 27 January 2024 21:32 (one year ago)

dear bandcamp writers, I like this EP by The Spatulas just fine, but it is not even remotely close to punk rock and I am baffled at to why it made it into the monthly roundup

"as to"

dead precedents (sleeve), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 22:17 (one year ago)

hi all - introducing myself after not-posting here in something like 15 years. anyway, I'm hoping it isn't bothersome to just jump in...

I was really excited to see the deluxe bias label come back with a couple of new releases last week after a dead-quiet 2023. this etiquette tape is definitely up my alley: short, brutal, self-consciously bone-headed... I love how this stuff takes advantage of the tape form not only as a fetish object but as a kind of mitigating/obscuring factor in the sound itself - it gives me the same thrill of hearing some "forgotten"/lost blues or international recording (not to mention, like, pre-slanted&enchanted pavement). no idea if I'd connect with it live or in full fidelity.

https://deluxebias.bandcamp.com/album/etiquette-demo-db-25

in a similar vein, I still haven't gotten over this cryin' hand tape from late 2022... pretty sure it's the same guy behind the exceptional HOLOGRAM stuff (https://ironlungrecords.bandcamp.com/album/no-longer-human-lungs-183), not to mention a side player in other projects.

https://dreamhomemusic.bandcamp.com/album/laugh-now-house-10

also, I know it got a lot of burn on punk-oriented year-end lists, but I thought that fairytale album was beautiful, for those who might not've heard it. perfect balance of lightness and violence. the cavernous-sounding vocals are a dreamy touch, & not something I'd ordinarily be into.

https://warsnofairytale.bandcamp.com/album/shooting-star

anyway, thanks for the recommendations here so far - hoping again that I'm not intruding!

mike powell, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 23:25 (one year ago)

wow, i've been checking in every other month or so to DL and assumed they'd hung it up! great post, please keep posting for sure

yeah thanks!

budo jeru, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 23:35 (one year ago)

both of those Deluxe Bias tapes are already sold out! crazy how tapes have basically replaced 45s in this new scene for immediacy/urgency/relevancy

Yeah, Cryin' Hand has Brendan in it, who basically is Hologram by himself on record I believe. Luke, who does Divorce Horse with Brendan also, is in it too. They get up to a crazy amount of stuff so hard to keep up, but I generally like all of it! Hologram is very cool stuff.

Brendan plays live now with that band Black Button I posted about last year, and has a new band called Cicada too.

That Black Button record got put out on vinyl recently if anyone is interested. Definitely a record I listened to quite a bit last year, really love it. "Great Closing Sleep" is a track I get stuck in my head all the time: https://blackbuttonva.bandcamp.com/album/black-button-rejoice-undesirable-033

Oh it's Les Lullies not La I see they're playing in Brighton on Sunday but will be in London again then

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 September 2024 01:01 (nine months ago)

Sept 16th is RMFC, Gee Tee, The Gobs, and Nick Normal in Portland, I'm gonna go

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Saturday, 7 September 2024 01:07 (nine months ago)

Snooper are playing in Brighton next week, I haven't got a ticket because I might need a break after this weekend (and am already seeing A R Kane next week) so will have to see how I feel on Monday

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 7 September 2024 01:37 (nine months ago)

I didn't make the 4th day of the Oh What Fun weekender but Saturday was great, I saw 10 bands and they were all good, highlights probably Assistert Sjølmord (same singer as Draümar, total force of energy), Turbo (last show unfortunately) and Traidora but Piñén, Flower, Gimic and Catastrophe were all great too

tonight I saw Snooper who were also great and the crowd was really up for it too, loads of energy

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 12 September 2024 21:17 (eight months ago)

there's a hardcore weekender in Brighton next weekender which I'll probably go to the Friday of at least because Plastics are playing and I love them, so September is looking pretty good for punk rock tbh. Melt-Banana and Mudhoney the week after that

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 12 September 2024 21:19 (eight months ago)

yo alpine static, if u are going to Swan Dive tonight I have a hot pink Eno/Fripp t-shirt on

pretty psyched about this show (see my xxxp)

omg that was so life-affirming, more tomorrow

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Tuesday, 17 September 2024 06:59 (eight months ago)

holy shit that show was great. The Gobs absolutely killed it doing like a 15-minute set, Nick Normal was very good, better than last time, and the two Australian bands (R.M.F.C. and Gee Tee) were awesome, just totally life-affirming stuff. Current RMFC lineup is drummer/singer/leader wit guitar, bass, electric 12-string (!!) and sax, it sounded incredible

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Friday, 20 September 2024 21:10 (eight months ago)

i still haven't listened the Gobs, i should probably fix that

went to a hardcore gig tonight, proper karate in the pit type HC mostly, was fun though, was in an old church which meant the sound was a bit off in places but we found a spot to the side where it sounded good and enough of a buffer we didn't get our noses broken by moshers (I did see a guy leaving the pit with blood all over his ear, maybe an earring got pulled out or something)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 20 September 2024 23:37 (eight months ago)

fuck man I am still high from the Gee Tee show, completely obsessed with them now (and Tee Vee Repairmann, and 1-800-Mikey, the Sydney scene just keeps on giving, sign me up for one enthusiastic late pass)

"The politics of rock ’n’ roll, in England or America or anywhere else, is that a whole lot of kids want to be fried out of their skins by the most scalding propulsion they can find, for a night they can pretend is the rest of their lives, and whether the next day they go back to work in shops or boredom on the dole or American TV doldrums in Mom ’n’ Daddy’s living room nothing can cancel the reality of that night in the revivifying flames when for once if only then in your life you were blasted outside of yourself and the monotony which defines most life anywhere at any time, when you felt supra-alive, when you supped on lightning and nothing else in the realms of the living or dead mattered at all"

-Lester Bangs, writing about The Clash

People seemed to enjoy the last Black Button record I posted here, so just noting that they have a new one. Chances are if you liked the last one you will enjoy it. They now have Brendan Reichhardt from Hologram and a million other DC/Richmond bands on drums.

postman came today with the (v limited) reissue of 4 Apostles 7"s - https://www.discogs.com/release/32159076-The-Apostles-There-Can-Be-No-Spectators

this is some classic stuff and originals are v hard to find. nice reissue, comes with reprint of all 3 issues of the Pigs For Slaughter fanzine and some stickers/patches etc. on Grow Your Own records, local label run by people from Anthrax (UK) & Hagar The Womb

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:17 (six months ago)

talking of limited reissues, The Swankys - The Very Best Of Hero was officially reissued on vinyl for the first time in September and I seem to have missed it. absolute noise punk classic, really hope some UK distros get some restocks in

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:27 (six months ago)

still need to get the Antisect - In Darkness There Is No Choice reissue and the next Rudimentary Peni reissue (Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric) is out today, it's all going on this autumn lol

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:31 (six months ago)

Not sure this is exactly the right thread for this but there doesn't seem to be a rolling noise rock thread and these threads used to be "punk and underground rock". Anyway the new Couch Slut absolutely bangs

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 12 November 2024 23:53 (six months ago)

In actually relevant to this thread news I saw Redd Kross tonight and they started their encore with Annette's Got The Hits, S&M Party and Standing In Front Of Poseur

I'm going to put Lumpy on now. I have ordered the Swankys reissue and the latest Rudimentary Peni reissue. it's the one with Papas Adrianus looping all the way through it which does make it a slightly challenging listen but hey it wouldn't be Rudimentary Peni otherwise

also got the new Kriegshog album which is one of my albums of the year for sure

one of the things I love about La Vida Es Un Mus records is they will reissue the most extreme noisy hardcore and anarcho punk and then put out Dolly Mixture records (I saw Rachel Love from Dolly Mixture a couple of weeks ago, she played How Come You're Such A Hit With The Boys, Jane? which is one of my favourite songs of all time). this year they've reissued the Twelve Cubic Feet - Straight Out The Fridge 10" which I think is kind of anarcho-indiepop. possibly my favourite crossover episode, unless it's anarcho-goth, talking of which, Brigandage are playing in Brighton next year, who is even in Brigandage in 2025?

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 1 December 2024 06:38 (six months ago)

I also did get the Antisect LP reissue a few weeks ago. that makes me very happy. I got a load of reissues of stuff that's been on my wantlist for in some cases over 20 years. Siege - Drop Dead, Bl'ast - Power of Expression, NoMeansNo - Wrong, Gang Green - Skate to Hell/Sold Out 7"s, I should already own all that stuff but so hard to find for reasonable prices in this country

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 1 December 2024 06:47 (six months ago)

is there a new lumpy and the dumpers album?

flopson, Sunday, 1 December 2024 07:07 (six months ago)
