yes, what a year

personally I'd have given Tindersticks the nod ahead of any number of these. Anyway, voted Gillian Welch.

the clean - getaway

ꙮ (map), Wednesday, 3 January 2024 23:31 (one year ago)

I actually only discovered that Clean album recently. It's maybe a bit light, a lot of instrumentals but it's a great listen. "Stars" one of their finest songs.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 4 January 2024 00:08 (one year ago)

Incredible year. So many choices. But it has to be Discovery

Love & Theft

dow, Thursday, 4 January 2024 01:37 (one year ago)

There's good music on the ten I've heard, though Tool escaped me a little. Let's say Radiohead over Bjork.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 4 January 2024 01:40 (one year ago)

When I was first going down this list I was thinking it was going to be hard to beat We Love Life and there was some competition like Insignificance, - Bright Flight or It's A Wonderful Life upmost others. Then I got to the end and there sitting there was Rings Around the World, easy choice after all.

Rooty!

enochroot, Thursday, 4 January 2024 23:47 (one year ago)

Good to see someone remembers Basement Jaxx fondly

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 4 January 2024 23:53 (one year ago)

I don't. Hated them.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 5 January 2024 00:24 (one year ago)

things we lost in the fire

ciderpress, Friday, 5 January 2024 00:34 (one year ago)

Gee, great year. 2001 might be the year I got a CD-R drive as I can 'see' possibly half of these as CD-R duplicates with scrawled titles. (Many of which may still survive as spares inside the cases of retail copies bought subsequently!)

Let's go with The Cold Vein, largely for the production. Narrowly ahead of Bright Flight, Idiology, Any Other City, Vespertine and Sound-Dust.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 5 January 2024 02:17 (one year ago)

I didn't vote for it, but when I was working in school, our little group in the computer lab loved Rooty. I haven't really listened to it since then though - I can't even remember the last time I put it on.

birdistheword, Friday, 5 January 2024 19:41 (one year ago)

Leonard Cohen's "Ten New Songs" is there twice. That's actually the album of these that I still listen to the most, though "Love and Theft" had a bigger impact on me at the time.

o. nate, Friday, 5 January 2024 21:56 (one year ago)

Too many classics (Bjork, Missy, Low, Radiohead, Aaliyah, Aphex, Tool, Fugazi, Basement Jaxx, throw Mouse on Mars and Can Ox in there, why not). But it's The Blueprint.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 5 January 2024 22:12 (one year ago)

doubt anyone else would but went for Herbert

nashwan, Friday, 5 January 2024 22:40 (one year ago)

I gained much more appreciation for Amnesiac when I saw the tour that year. It worked much better live.

The Leonard Cohen probably means the most to me now. I doubt I would have said that in 2001.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 5 January 2024 22:46 (one year ago)

I’m going with DNTEL as I coincidentally re-discovered how much I like it a few weeks ago and it holds a lot of meaning between one of my best friends and myself.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 6 January 2024 00:44 (one year ago)

Basement Jaxx live has been one of the most fun concerts I’ve been to but somehow I just don’t like how they sound on the albums. I don’t know if it’s the mix or what exactly but they annoy me lol

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 6 January 2024 00:46 (one year ago)

We Love Life

wherewasyou, Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:07 (one year ago)

This is actually gonna be tough

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:10 (one year ago)

Top 5 (as it was then, as it is now):

Daft Punk - Discovery
Basement Jaxx - Rooty
Aaliyah - s/t
Missy Elliot - Miss E... So addictive
Bjork - Vespertine

― stephen miller is not your friend (Eric H.), Thursday, January 4, 2024

these are my favorites too. I ended up voting for Vespertine, but the others have also meant a lot to me

Dan S, Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:16 (one year ago)

Marmoset - Record in Red

you rule

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:22 (one year ago)

My favorite album of 2001 is probably Spiritualized’s Let It Come Down, but that’s not on this list. So I’ll vote for Melody AM.

Is This It - haven’t heard this in years, no idea if it holds up, was obsessed with it at the time though

Rings Around the World - Ehhh… I liked this a lot at the time but I hadn’t heard Guerilla yet which is so much better.

Drukqs - The critical lashing this album got at the time was so unfair. It’s soooo much better than Syro. How could anybody hate “Avril 14th”?

Amnesiac - This is where I got off the Radiohead bus. “Like Spinning Plates” is horrid!

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:24 (one year ago)

After the Pulp and Discovery, Zoot Woman and Only People Place are probably my highest play count. Both are very easy listening

wherewasyou, Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:33 (one year ago)

There's so many albums here I love, but my own favourite of 2001 is either Rooty or Rings Around the World. Both are here ofc but I will probably go for the latter.

My personal favs of 2001 continued: 3. Lunasa's The Merry Sisters of Fate. 4. Amnesiac. 5. Aaliyah. 6. Hots Shots II. 7. Discovery. 8. Melody A. M. 9. We Love Life. 10. Origin of Symmetry.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 6 January 2024 01:36 (one year ago)

Guerrilla and RATW switch around as my fav SFA album, whereas I think for Jaxx I've been settled on Kish Kash (against Remedy and Rooty) now long enough for it to cease being an unstable favourite.

Drukqs

Lowell N. Behold'n, Tuesday, 9 January 2024 03:27 (one year ago)

This was gonna be impossible for me until I saw 10,000 Hz Legend. It’s 10,000 Hz Legend.

My favorite album of 2001 is probably Spiritualized’s Let It Come Down, but that’s not on this list. So I’ll vote for Melody AM.

Love Let It Come Down, def my favorite Spiritualized.

J. Sam, Tuesday, 9 January 2024 04:28 (one year ago)

it might be cold vein ya know

ava (paolo), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 08:49 (one year ago)

loads of good stuff here, but the one I go back to most is Aphex, so voted that

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 09:46 (one year ago)

"Discovery" for me. Tough choice since there are a few favorites released that year.

completely suited to the horny decadence (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 12:26 (one year ago)

Love & Theft, but honorable mentions to Bright Flight and Ultraglide in Black.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 13:29 (one year ago)

Left, Tuesday, 9 January 2024 13:56 (one year ago)

wait maybe aaliyah... I thought that album was 2000 for some reason

no wait bjork

I forget this was a good year for music considering how bad it was for everything else

Left, Tuesday, 9 January 2024 13:58 (one year ago)

listening to the strokes now and it's like...

this is solid retro pop rock but how on earth did we mistake it for garage rock? it's so polite! people (esp in the UK) projected so much weird stuff onto this band in order to kickstart the scene they wanted to happen. rarely has an album title felt more appropriate

System, Thursday, 11 January 2024 00:01 (one year ago)

is DRUKQS pronounced "drug use" or "drux", I've seen people calling it one way or the other.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 11 January 2024 18:04 (one year ago)

Sound-Dust is the easy winner for me, with Standards as a runner up

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 11 January 2024 18:09 (one year ago)

Could easily have gone for a dozen of these. Narrowed it down to Lateralus, The Argument, Rings Around the World and Revelator.

Went for Ease Down the Road.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 11 January 2024 21:31 (one year ago)

Amnesiac was my Kid A

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 11 January 2024 21:48 (one year ago)

At the time I would have said Daft Punk or Aaliyah or Jay-Z, but Iron Flag has ended up being the album I have listened to most from this year over the past few decades, as well as my (opinions4u) favourite Wu-Tang Clan album.

Tim F, Thursday, 11 January 2024 23:35 (one year ago)

always assumed drukqs was pronounced "drugs"

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 11 January 2024 23:39 (one year ago)

The one that’s lasted best for me is Insignificance, which I didn’t hear until 2002. Spacek’s Curvatia was a big favourite at the time, as was Dolly Parton’s Little Sparrow.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 11 January 2024 23:54 (one year ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Friday, 12 January 2024 00:01 (one year ago)

Expected favourites not winning. I was sure Daft Punk would definitely win this time around.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 12 January 2024 01:25 (one year ago)

Not sure there'd many years where I bought/like all of the top 5 plenty despite mentioning just one of them in a shortlist a week ago.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Friday, 12 January 2024 02:39 (one year ago)

Genuinely surprised Gillian Welch is so popular here

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 20:32 (one year ago)

I'm not. It's a brilliant album.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 21:04 (one year ago)

Time (The Revelator) also finished #1 on our "Women of Country Music" poll last year:
