on a saturday night / sunday morning !!!
hello ?
it cost us a tenner to get in, the dex were f*cked all night
(i mean really fucked, not one song
played all the thru without jumping, scratching, skipping etc.)
the club *shut* at 2...jesus these guys wouldn't last
a week in manchester.
is this typical of london ?
reason i ask, is that lately i been to cargo, plasticpeople,
and 93 feet east, and *none* of the nights were up to honestly
an average night in manchester's decent places.
even *free* nights up here (aficianado for one)
are a world apart. yea i know it was shoreditch and maybe we
should know better, but how did such a shit place clubwise
get to be so 'cool'. a 'cool' place up here means decent.
y'know a GOOD PLACE and that.

wake up london yer *dead* !!

The trouble with the london club scene is it's split between two equally unpleasant extremes. The first is nasty-ass garage and jungle raves in places like Romford which attract a crowd who do love their music, but are run by scummy promoters who are after a quick buck. The other is trendy scum-clubbing around shoreditch and soho where loads of effort goes into the name and the flyer and very little into basics like soundsystems etc. These clubs succeed because they have the right connections and get the right sort of people to go, and hence project an image.

There are a few good ones though, but they're not that talked about. Madrugada is great, down in Whitechapel (which is almost shoreditch).

It's a well-worn critique but I think it is true that regional clubbing is better because it's less image-obsessed, and because the nights tend to go on longer and attract a more loyal crowd. In london there's just too much choice out there to go to the same thing every week.

I have DJed at 93 Ft East therefore it cannot be cool.

its well documented that clubbing is better in the north, but there are good clubs in london, but many change all the time, or are not really publicised, trash is good, although i havent been in a while. i enjoyed nag nag nag a lot, fabric is terrible! its like all the fun has been sucked out, 333 is worse because the music is poor. there are the nesh/rephlex events, which can be very good, i've always fancied the 500% reggae/dancehall nights at electrowerkz, i like electrowerkz as a venue.

i was bought up on scummy warehouses in the north "ah reet man, where you from what you on?" so i dont think any of these things are going to compare (but then, those places are different now to then, also, the death of black market rave utopianism - "every posse an crew the future is before your eyes!")

i dont really think of 93ft east as a club, more of a bar really, as with most shoreditch places, they're not really clubs.

also, can depend on the promoter/club, we're going to 93 feet east on friday actually, its Eat Your Own Ears, with dmx krew, maddog wallace etc, i hope its good!

the other thing is, what about trance and hardhouse nights? places like peach or whatever till have that mega up for it and friendly crows, this is something that is overlooked in the snobbery against such places. but there you'll meet very friendly people who are very up for it. and they have glosticks!

"mega up for it and friendly crows"

it's not just abt. pulling birds.

What does Maddog Wallace play? I've heard lots of people rave about him...

I'm djing at Electrowerkz on friday! Electrowerkz is fun.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Maddog Wallace is Grant Wilson-Claridge, who co-runs Rephlex with Richard James. Not heard him play, but presumably it's braindance all the way.

Well, I can certainly see why he changed his name. 'fraid you may have put me off for life with that little tidbit...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 6 December 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yikes! i'm meant to be playing eat your own ears at 93 east in january. now you got me worried, esp. as about 75% of my experiences of playing in london have been awful.
