yes "top" i meant "top", thank you fingers πŸ™„

mark s, Wednesday, 10 January 2024 18:45 (one year ago)

Speaking of top, I'll get the ball rolling with ex-Magma bassist Jannick Top's "Utopia Viva" track from the "Soleil D'Ork" album (a reissue of various tracks he recorded in the late 70s). I'm calling it as proggy funk rather than funky prog. Or is it something else entirely?

if this is a thread for tops-only, y'all are about to learn what "topping from the bottom" looks like

this is what comes to mind immediately

no, no, wait, how about this

This thread is reminding me of when I interviewed Lenny White (drummer for Return To Forever, among many other things) and he was telling me about how he and Stanley Clarke were hanging out with Chris Squire and Patrick Moraz of Yes. Prog, fusion, funk...it was all one thing!

Tahuti Watches L&O:SVU Reruns Without His Ape (unperson), Thursday, 11 January 2024 04:04 (one year ago)

there's definitely a lot of funk in classic prog (well, maybe not ELP) it just comes in measured doses. so if you were looking for something a person could actually dance to you'd lean more towards motorik psychedelic stuff. but hey I'm diggin what I see in this thread so far

frogbs, Thursday, 11 January 2024 04:17 (one year ago)

oh hey i think Return To Forever is fusion

when i think of prog-funk, i think of Azymuth. So like the title of this video says "Latin Jazz Funk Fusion" but I'm pretty sure it is disco

Deflatormouse, Thursday, 11 January 2024 04:44 (one year ago)

i'll weigh in w/my own "big theory" of all this at some point when i'm not on deadline (i know i always say this, i'm always on deadline is why i always forget)

for now i'm listening to GAZEUSE! (1976) (suckier title in the US: EXPRESSO), also feat. f.moze on bass -- i guess it gets file under jazz-funk or jazz fusion >:(

this was the first gong LP i actually bought for myself i think, i ran ran RAN to play it to my schoolchums, who were politely baffled (or in one case v rude)

Ponty's mid 70s albums are great. I have five of them in one of those budget CD boxes.

Who needs Chris Squire when you've got Genesis P-Orridge on bass?

Little Billy Love (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 January 2024 14:48 (one year ago)

I'd like to reiterate my (Mothership) conviction

that the synthesizer riff for "Night of the Thumpasorus Peoples" was borrowed from "The Revealing Science of God" by Yes, from Tales from Topographic Oceans

Anyway, here's Mike Oldfield in 1979 adding drums and a more syncopated bassline to the intro of "Tubular Bells" while keeping the 15/8 time signature:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFqKK4qCRZk

Pierre Moerlen and his brother are both part of the rhythm section here, plus Pekka Pohjola on bass, further evidence of prog/fusion cross-contamination.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 11 January 2024 15:19 (one year ago)

that's Genesis on the left, right? they look amazing. fucking _goals_.

Graphic designer Stanley Donwood, known for his work with Radiohead, selected the album cover as his personal favourite in a 2013 interview.[13]

oh _really_ now

while we're talking about RPI (italian prog), might as well give shout-outs to furio chirico, kind of a legendarily crazy awesome drummer in that scene

xps Cosey on the left. Gen is 2nd from left, some decades pre-pandrogyny.

Look forward to listening

Deflatormouse, Thursday, 11 January 2024 16:31 (one year ago)

wait, in the white jacket? show me some non-binary people who look like young lesbians

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:04 (one year ago)

i think next time i go to a convention i want to cosplay the cover of that record but i'd need to find three people who are willing to dress as either men or non-binary lesbians

also i guess i'd need to find a dress. that shoulder cut would look horrible on me but sometimes i just gotta say "the hell with it" and dress super clocky

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:09 (one year ago)

i mean is there a more iconic footwear combo than athletic socks and strappy heels

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 11 January 2024 19:11 (one year ago)

xp that sounds like a solid plan

yes, Gen is in the white jacket. I do not enjoy paying random compliments to abusers but can't deny that she was strikingly, astonishingly beautiful when I saw PTV3 in like 2008.

― Deflatormouse

ehhh there's probably a discussion to be had re: the ethics of paying compliments to abusers, but having it would make it look like i was defending or exculpating gen's actions, which i'm not. and anyway this thread isn't the place for it.

what this thread _is_ the place for - well, it's not, but i'm doing it anyway - is for saying that i found a dress that looks close enough and ordered it. if i had any skill at sewing i could probably make it work. the one i ordered has short sleeves, is the thing, and cosey's dress is sleeveless.

it's all a moot point anyway, no fucking way i could wear heels like the ones she's wearing.

i've already had people tell me that nobody would recognize the cosplay. i think they are falling prey to the soft tyranny of low expectations. i went to a pizza joint in the pearl and the lady behind the counter was wearing a fucking cleaners from venus t-shirt. people would recognize a cosplay of the cover of _20 jazz funk greats_.

shit, maybe i could just do it as a photo! that's an idea.

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 12 January 2024 22:06 (one year ago)

Italian prog has been evoked, but I think the soundtrack/library music end of it merits special attention within this discussion (but I'm not qualified).

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 12 January 2024 22:08 (one year ago)

i found a dress that looks close enough and ordered

damn, you don't waste any time. that is excellent news

the one i ordered has short sleeves, is the thing, and cosey's dress is sleeveless.

Cosey's dress isn't sleeveless, but the sleeves on it are quite short. looks like a striped cotton jersey dress with contrasting ribbed collar and sleeves. Basically like a stripey ringer tee in dress form. Totally cool. Something like that you could take it to a dry cleaner and have the sleeves shortened for probably $10-20, or you could get a seam ripper and remove them.

. i think they are falling prey to the soft tyranny of low expectations.

100%

shit, maybe i could just do it as a photo! that's an idea.

then you could wear the heels!! with SOCKS!!! 😍

Italian prog has been evoked, but I think the soundtrack/library music end of it merits special attention within this discussion.

careful or we'll end up invoking disco records that sound like Pink Floyd planetarium laser shows.

KPM is like the Folkways of this stuff, except the music exists to be stored. It makes me think of the chapter in "The Sixth Extinction" where Elizabeth Kolbert visits the Frozen Zoo where they keep all the tissue samples of endangered animals in a vault.

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 13 January 2024 03:03 (one year ago)

i googled "striped ringer t shirt dress" because !!!?? and instantly found a few that are pretty close. this one has shorter sleeves like Cosey's but no contrast ribbing on the sleeves. it's $7.99

ctrl + F "ian carr"

budo jeru, Saturday, 13 January 2024 05:04 (one year ago)

hey mark s, i'll await your grand theory eagerly but after listening to a few trax embedded itt i think the issue is i somehow don't know the difference between fusion and prog

what's ian carr done?

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 20 January 2024 21:26 (one year ago)

Ian Carr led Nucleus, so that’s a good call. I saw him live about 15 years ago and he was funky and proggy and jazzy.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 20 January 2024 21:42 (one year ago)

carr also wrote biographies of miles and jarrett which are very detail-rich and musically knolwedgeable (tho as writing a bit dry for my taste)

mark s, Saturday, 20 January 2024 21:47 (one year ago)

oh i don't think i have any albums by nucleus. if i do they didn't take.
that's cool about the bios.

i had this cd when i was 9 years old called 'progressive 70's' that had '21st century schizoid man', 'starship trooper' and 'communion with the sun' on it, but also 'i wouldn't wanna be like you' and 'bringing home the bacon' and 'in every dream home a heartache' because you gotta keep the kids good and confused i guess

i think you win the thread with that Stardrive track, i can't even tell if this one is a salad bowl or a melting pot.

i'm quite sure it is funky prog, proggy funk, prog-funk, prog, funk, and disco.
