My Favourite Album of my Favourite Albums of.....2002!!

Damn. It's probably Clipse, but I'm voting DJ Shadow as my underrated album that I love (I kinda missed Endtroducing and this was the one I actually got into after hearing it on college radio late one night).

Also listened a ton to the El-P, Missy, Blackalicious, RJD2, Timberlake, Deerhoof, and Dalek. Came later to Sonic Youth and Low. If I'm being honest I've only listened to some of the other big records a few times (Beth Gibbons, Wilco, Beck, the Streets, etc).

I like a lot of these but only considered voting for mclusky does dallas and YHF.

My list is a bit different to this

Same now as it was then: Sonic Youth - Murray Street. One of their best and maybe their best (especially when Im listening to it)

Crap, voted for Under Construction before I saw Akufen in the mix.

Certainly the right time of year to be listening to (did so just last week) and voting for Beth & Rustin...but probably have to go with the event that was Geogaddi

Voted for RJD2, The only one of these I immediately put on when I read the list. Still sounds good.

Some absolutely bonkers good indie and mainstream hip hop this year but Blazing Arrow is my GOAT rap record and therapy album so it gets my vote. Everyone should listen to Feel That Way when they're down.

So much other great stuff here, yeah not as epic as 2001, but damn - this is quite a collection of stone cold classics.

There's plenty of good stuff around each year as you get to the end of the decade . But the consensus albums were mostly crap tbh esp GAPDYX

I don't know most of these. The ones I've listened to most were Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Fantastic Damage, and Songs for the Deaf. Haven't listened to YHF in years. Fantastic Damage still holds up, but it's always been about 20 minutes too long. Songs for the Deaf is still perfect.

Its my fave Qotsa after the first.

Agree this is a weak year. My nonconsensus pick for the year is the FM Knives album. Of these listed would go with Sonic Youth.

I think it's a decent year myself judging by this old list I made.

there are literally no bad years you freaks, the amount of good music that comes out every year is literally incomprehensible. i guess the defense for people who say that would be that they're referring to the consensus, but that still sounds dumb to me, the consensus is amorphous, it changes over time and depends on who you're paying attention to

I still think 2002 isn't a bad year at all for the music I like.

reveille - this wasn't a difficult choice. i'm a big sy fan, wanted to love MS, but found it underwhelming. compared to the juggernaut that is reveille, there's no contest.

also, loved mark nevers' production on is a woman ... this probably has something to do with bpb's master and everyone (2003) being a favorite of 26 year-old me. re: wilco, i'm a sucker for the refined versions of YHF songs on kicking television (2005)

I listened to Finisterre a few days weeks ago, so being the only one whose durability I've officially re-checked in 2024, that'll do! (Flimsiest criterion ever, I know.)

The Notwist. Fell hard for Shrink, one of those albums where a different favorite shines each play. High expectations for Neon Golden confirmed by first single Pilot, then shattered by Pick Up the Phone and One With the Freaks. Since going back in the catalog and hearing One Dark Love Poem and Puzzle, Neon Golden was the absolute refinement of everything I wanted in a pop hook, while still feeling experimental enough that it stretched my tastes.

I love The Notwist album. Caught 'The Pilot'on MTV2 late at night and it became one of my all time favourite songs there and then

knife play (2002) by xiu xiu is excellent. then 'a promise' in 2003, which is an all-time favorite.

It's hard to choose between Out of Season and Walking With Thee. Obviously they are very different, but one thing that unites them, in spite of being well-written and well-performed, is a certain feeling that they owe too much to the pioneering work of other, earlier artists. That might have been a feeling I had about a variety of acclaimed artists in 2002 - Beck and Wilco for example.
Voting for Clinic because they haven't been mentioned.

I would've expected more votes for "Original Pirate Material" but I guess it was more of a zeitgeist moment? I still love it. "Weak Become Heroes" in particular.

Yeah, it deserved more votes, but then again given how many options there were and how good many of those were, I imagine the votes in general had to be spread somewhat thin.
