Most Disappointing cd of the year

My vote goes to Elvis Costello's North. Elvis as Tony Bennett with bad songs doesn't cut it for me.

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't even know Kid Rock had a new album out until I saw it at the store. After hearing the first six songs, I understood why the buzz was nil. I swear to god, Uncle Kracker sounds better than the American Bad-ass these days.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Love Below

scott pl. (scott pl.), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hail to the Thief. Man, it's so disappointing. And I really wanted to like Radiohead again.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd probably go with Hail To The Thief if Amnesiac hadn't already softened the blow. If HTTT followed Kid A, I'd be pissed.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Except I like HTTT and I control you. Oh wait, that's wrong somehow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom and Johnny Fever OTM. Did that Coldplay record come out this year? It was everything everyone said Coldplay was.

Sean M (Sean M), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

outkast

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Outkast OR Chicken And Beer (which isn't bad, but should have been epoch-making).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Except I like Outkast and I control you. Oh wait, I LOVE the Outkast album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely not Radiohead. A huge leap in the right direction after the disastrous "Kid A" and the almost as disastrous "Amnesiac".

I don't know, really, as I have heard nothing this year that has been really disappointing.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

95% of timbaland's productions this year

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

100th Window. The fact that it's disappointing is the only thing I can remember about it.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And Blur was a leap in the right direction after the awful "13" and the pointless "Gorillaz" too, even though not quite up to their mid 90s standard, of course.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It has to be "Supporter Album #1" by Einstuerzende Neubauten.
What a piece of shit! terrible production, stupid lyrics, and tired music.
and they are trying it again at neubauten.org
PLONK and WANK!

i like ike, Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

cat power

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god yes - 100th window - the only things i have listened to are the Luomo and Akufen remixes of ... (cant even remember the name of the song!).

that and Want:one

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, manitoba. i hadnt heard anything of his before, bought the cd on the strength of rave reviews, and couldn't get into it at all. and i really wanted to like it!

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Liz Phair was predictably bad, so it wasn't really that much of a disappointment. And the Mars Volta album was more baffling than disappointing. Right now for me it's a tie between Beulah's Yoko and the American Analog Set's Promise of Love.

Nick Mirov (nick), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What I've heard so far of the new Blink-182 confirms my fears that they'd take Jimmy Eat World's success to heart. Yes, I know no one else cares, play nice.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I care! Though I'm starting to worry that I only can see, hear and smell the new Kid Rock album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

that should be only I.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

albums that were mildly disappointing and only I gave a shit about (to the best of my knowledge):
Limp Bizkit
Sugar Ray
Everclear (ok this one really wasn't that worthwhile)
Twilight Singers (ok others care about this one)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of like the Twilight Singers album, but I missed the boat on the first one (which many have said was a lot better).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, duh. Sorry Anthony, forgot you were on this thread. Sugar Ray peaked with 14:59. I bet even KRS-One wouldn't appear on their records anymore.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

BLASPHEMY! The self-titled Sugar Ray album terrific! 14:59 had classic singles but just about every song on the follow-up is a shouldabeen smash. The new album, which has a few decent songs and a weird Chi-Chi's vibe (not just in the music but also in the artwork), has Shaggy on it. They haven't really fallen THAT far.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Neptunes Present....Clones. Yeah, some quite good tracks ("Pop Shit" being the best) but nothing mind-blowing scintilating, a la "Grindin'" or even "Hot In Herre". A lot of top players under-performing (Luda, Jay-Z).

Nick H, Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Brother Anthony, in the best interests of the Sugar Ray community, let us set aside our differences in a high-profile fashion that will help me promote my upcoming collection of rhythmic threats upon the lives of your family members.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck that. thug for life.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah? Well Jean Grae told me you don't know what gangsta is, and that if Northern State sees you they should slap you.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I was pretty unimpressed by the New Pornographers.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my disappoinment that I don't think anyone else cares about: Consonant - Love and Affliction.

It's not bad, just I'm not super obsessed with it like I was with the first one.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

blount otm re: cat power
also, bonnie prince billy
I thought I liked both albums after the first couple of listens but no earthly power could get me to put them on ever again

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that Cat Power album was kind of funny in that the music was more straightforward than ever but the words were much less affecting. One step forward, two steps back.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince Paul

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

god, I didn't even HEAR that one. Aren't the skits good at least?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even remember.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel sort-of OTM. A lot of it is underwhelming, but bits of it are very good, esp It's Only Divine Right & All For Swinging You Around.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Prince Paul had one brilliant song though, the Chubb Rock Will You Please Pay, etc., etc old-school back in the day one.

The skits weren't funny, if I recall.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I think if they were funny we might have some slight recollection of 'em.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Consonant - Love and Affliction

Yeah I was kind of surprised that this record did nothing for me. Anyway just to be a dick the Dizzee Rascal record disappointed the hell out of me. After "I Love U" and all its greatness we get this mopey emo stuff? Bah!

adam (adam), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Enon's Hocus Pocus is very blah. Not even an interesting disaster. Just blah.

dlp9001, Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Rufus Wainwright's Want was not what I was hoping for, and I can only think of one song that was really interested me. It's kinda over the top and very boring. And I was really excited about that one before it came out. There's a Want 2 coming out next year, and I'm not sure I'll even get it based on this one.

I also thought the new Silver Mt. Zion album was really boring, and I'm a fan of the other two albums.

Jonathan (Jonathan), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

also, Joe Budden, Pretty Girls Make Graves (although this is maybe developing into a guilty pleasure)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo La Tengo - Summer Sun
Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power

fozzy bear, Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed on Chicken And Beer and Clones .

Didn't even bother with North.

-Colin

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm feeling more and more dissapointed with The Black Album , too.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Coral - Magic & Medicine (skull-fuckingly dull)
The Dears - No Cities Left (only mildly disappointing)
Eels - Shootenanny (although after Souljacker I shouldn't have expected much)
Over the Rhine - Ohio (a handful of magnificent tracks, particularly "B.P.D." which is one of my new favorite songs, but way overstacked w/ filler)

Simon H., Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't been disappointed by very much this year - we had good albums from several stalwarts: Robert Wyatt, New Pornographers, Stephen Malkmus, Steve Lacy, John Zorn, etc. Maybe the biggest disappointment for me was the new Yamamoto Seiichi - which wasn't terrible, but just kind of halfbaked.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

is it sugar ray who had that "every morning...." song?
anyway,i haven't really heard many albums from this year,i liked dizzee rascal and like the sound of the black album so far,and thats about all i've heard,i think...

robin (robin), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Sugar Ray did "Every Morning."

Yo La Tengo seconded.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 November 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ADULT. Anxiety Always

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

new pornographers are stalwarts already?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Summer Sun took a long time to grow on me, but now I've fallen for it completely. But I am a YLT sucker and saw a great show a couple months back.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

new pornographers are stalwarts already?

I use the term loosely. Feel free to substitute: "any band I had reason to expect good things from".

o. nate (onate), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything involving anything or anyone called the Matrix.

spittle, Monday, 17 November 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Adult. seconded. In the context of electroclash AA sounded very rich. Then I heard the N.O.I.A. reissue, and haven't been able to listen to AA since.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 17 November 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Why has no-one mentioned The Rapture yet? _Echoes_ was a BIG let-down.

alext (alext), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Stephen Malkmus by a mile. zzzzzz.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, delete "by a mile." that's a bit extreme. but I still don't like the album.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Kish Kash, but for it's reception/performance not it's quality

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have said "Summer Sun" until recently, and I do kinda agree with "Echoes", mainly cuz it had to live up to "House of Jealous Lovers", and didn't.
I might add "Answers" by Ui, again cuz of the high expectations.

peepee (peepee), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Freeway, "Philadelphia Freeway"
Zwan, "Mary Star of the Sea"

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 17 November 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Kish Kash, but for its production (or lack therof), not its quality/reception/performance

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Luomo, Ludacris, Outkast possibly but I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times

Michael B, Monday, 17 November 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew WK - "The Wolf"

So far behind "I Get Wet" I almost cried. Then I put "I Get Wet" on and bounded about my room like a bouncy ball and all was right with the world.

Nick H, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryan Adams - Rock and Roll

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

matos, where's the love for indie prog folk? steve always speaks so highly of you when we go out for abisynthe!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So I take it you liked the first solo Malkmus better, Matos?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Moodyman's new one. YAWN.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone disappointed by 'Phantom Power' at all?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

how can something LACK production?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a little disappointed by Phantom Power but to be honest I was already set up for it by Rings Around the World.

It's pretty easy to lack production (most live albums ever) but Kish Kash definitely didn't. What about its reception disappointed you, Steve?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

not enough, I'm guessing

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I'd definetely second the Malkmus nomination.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

kelly osbourne's new single

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

that r.e.m. song animal is the worst thing i've ever heard by them. and i liked 'up'.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

o. nate: yes, by a mile.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with several, especially the Costello and Yo La Tengo records. I think the best thing to come from "Summer Sun" was that YLT took The Clean on tour(!) The Consonant record was a big disappointment, as I also was obsessed with their debut (isn't there another thread like this from a few months back?)

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of expected the Jayhawks album to be slightly disappointing, as they had annouced it would be a bit "back to the roots" and not as pop oriented as "Smile" was. As it turned out, it was still really strong though, simply because the tunes were good enough to make me forget about the lack of sophisticated arrangements.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Lilys' Precollection for me.

Jeremy (Jeremy), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

For me personally it was MURS album. Not that I anticipated it or anything. Heard/read good things about it, bought it, and was completely underwhelmed. Haven't bought a hip hop album since, although I am looking forward to that Jay Z album where he quotes Whitman and samples Schoenberg.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That one will be a doozy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew WK owns this thread, IMO.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

king kapisi's 2nd round testament, sigh.

etc, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

precollection is genius.

keith m (keithmcl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, prince paul was disappointing.

whoever said outkast is wrong. that album just should have been one great disk without stupid fillers.

radiohead? even if they are good because of electro or whatever, this article is right. i don't care about disappointing albums. let's talk about how radiohead never was good thus hail to the theif wasn't meant to be. yeah!

"...is that the art-rock band is not about rhythm, even if it sometimes plays in meters of 10/4 or 23/8. Neither is it about harmony, which tends to be static, or melody, which tends to be minimal, or structure, which tends to be simple and repetitive.
...
The band, which has an intensely dedicated international following and is the darling of so many rock critics, is really about extending teen angst into one's late 20s. Frontman Thom Yorke has just the slippery, enervated whine for that task. He writes the sort of lyrics that refer to child abuse, drug addiction, cannibalism, oppression and the general suckiness of life in oblique language that reads like an earnest, naive attempt at deep, highbrow poetry."

radiohead sucks. fresh!

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Al Green, I Can't Stop

terrible songs, voice buried in the mix, no double-tracked vocals and the drums...I could write a book

a dull, dull record

rumple, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I poop too much.

Labia, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Body Language :(

(OK, it's the most disappointing CD of the day for me, but still I'm disappointed.)
