Playing “Kollage” for the first time. I’ve never kept up with CRJ but this seems very un-CRJ, not in a negative way though! You could probably sneak this into a shoegaze playlist.

my goal is to convince someone else to vote for mbalax tracks this year

ufo, Sunday, 28 January 2024 11:45 (one year ago)

Here's a playlist

Only things missing from that are Kitchen Mirror, First Light and 3 minutes' insight into what the insides of my head sound like

imago, Monday, 29 January 2024 12:10 (one year ago)

Fred P’s “On the Beach” is 10 minutes of what one might call upscale tropical steakhouse house pop (if, like me, one isn’t great with house genre tag descriptors). You could far worse, this is wonderful.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 January 2024 12:16 (one year ago)

I've listened to all these and my faves are:

Space Ghost - Night Dive (Deep End Mix)
Grecco Romank - Piss Baby
CTT Beats x Sho Madjozi - Balotelli
Art School Girlfriend - A Place To Lie
Surusinghe - bop
Lone - Waterfall Reverse
Danny Brown - Bass Jam

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Monday, 29 January 2024 12:20 (one year ago)

Fred P's dropped a lot of goodness in the last couple of years and deserves the attention of all Larry Heard fans.

Tempted to ignore my own three "tactical" picks here (Fred, Mui Zyu, ASG) and vote 'iPlan' tho.

nashwan, Monday, 29 January 2024 12:21 (one year ago)

The Jessica Ekomane might be ambient and thus not my usual bag, but the sound design is pretty spectacular. If you like good sound design, check it out!

imago, Monday, 29 January 2024 12:24 (one year ago)

there's some good stuff here that i found out through the noms thread. Obvs had to vote for my own nom, Balotelli, but I liked Cruel Santino, iPlan, Skeng and a good few others

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Monday, 29 January 2024 13:21 (one year ago)

ARE YOU THE GIRL OF THE LOVE

imago, Monday, 29 January 2024 13:23 (one year ago)

Glad you dig the Ekomane, imago! That was my number 2 vote

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 January 2024 13:25 (one year ago)

She’s released one great full length (Multivocal in 2019) and I wish there was more, but she seems to be a live artist more than a recording artist

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 January 2024 13:30 (one year ago)

I meant to nominate that Lone track, but then completely forgot, so I ended up putting it in my first place spot at the very last minute as a write in. Definitely worth a listen, a return to his roots, with tons of energy.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Monday, 29 January 2024 14:24 (one year ago)

This kingtommi track is pretty wild

imago, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 09:39 (one year ago)

My #2. I think it's the best incorporation of uk drill into indie I've ever heard. The way it explodes at the end is everything.

What's the mbalax tracks? I listen to everything posted in the Afropop threads, but can never remember the artists.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 12:50 (one year ago)

Cruel Santino ft. S-smart - FTR
Bilou XIV ft. Sidy Diop - Tangal

are my two votes here

ufo, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 13:48 (one year ago)

i was the vote for asake, great song!

kissinger on my list (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 16:07 (one year ago)

Two of mine here. I must confess I didn't give much thought to rankings this year but I would stan for my number 1 - Fantastic Man's Beyond Control. I'm a sucker for all the early 90s euro piano house revival stuff around just now but it's a particularly fine example with ethereal vocal snippets taking it higher. Also comfortably my most listened to tune when running last year so gave it the vote

or something, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 16:13 (one year ago)

ok planet of the bass voter please show yourself

kissinger on my list (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 16:30 (one year ago)

Voted Elvis

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 30 January 2024 19:08 (one year ago)

i voted Space Ghost as my #2 -- he's great across the board, highly recommend checking out his 2022 album Private Paradise, which is largely the same vibe.

omar little, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 19:25 (one year ago)

Space Ghost is brilliant. think I've charted something of his every year for the past few, but not 2023

or something, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 22:22 (one year ago)

this is always my favorite part of the EOY rollout

loving the Fred P so far and looking forward to checking out more

budo jeru, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 00:05 (one year ago)

NewJeans - Zero was my #1. I know people dislike it because it's a commercial (I think), but I think the rhythmic build is incredible, and the best they've ever done. I love the way the rhythm switches in the chorus.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 08:07 (one year ago)

I should have voted for "It Must Change" so it gets my vote here

Indexed, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 20:23 (one year ago)

Some great stuff here. Make sure you listen to the 7min "iPlan" not the video edit.

Voting for Grecco Romank's Beauty-and-the-Beast bogan EBM - here's something from a NZ 2023 roundup:

Grecco Romank - 'Piss Baby' at The Others Way

I think I’ve been to every Grecco show in Tāmaki Makaurau, but something about this one was exceptionally lit, and felt very special. In particular - ‘Piss Baby’. You could barely hear Billie’s stunning, classically trained demon-angel-baby voice over the heaving crowd, screaming every word and writhing in salacious glee. It was diabolical in the best way, and brought about a sense of elation akin only to the vibes at the Blood Rave in Blade.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Having listened to all of them, will still go for one of my two picks (Joshua Idehen/DJ Sabrina).

However if I had to go for another, it’d either be Lone or Fred P.

i don't dislike it because it's a commercial but because I really hate the chorus. It reminds me of the navy recruiting song from the Simpsons lol

I do like the rest of it though

ok planet of the bass voter please show yourself

i nommed this for lols, surprised someone actually voted for it and that high too heh

Right, the melody is bad - is it a jingle? - but the rhythm! The way it all stops, and the small yelps that gets a bit delayed the third time. I love it!

Frederik B, Saturday, 3 February 2024 13:11 (one year ago)

i agree with roz about the "zero" chorus, it's really weak. there is cool stuff going on in the track otherwise though

ufo, Saturday, 3 February 2024 13:12 (one year ago)

I voted for Fred P

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 3 February 2024 14:42 (one year ago)

"Bass Jam" my #1, one of Danny Brown and Paul White's greatest moments together (production reminds me of some of White's solo stuff, esp. "Running on a Rainy Day"). can't resist songs about families in awe of / communicating through music, this expresses it so beautifully

soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Saturday, 3 February 2024 16:33 (one year ago)

Everything I've been hearing by Fred P is great, esp. been checking out the new "DJs are the Original Expats" series. Didn't realize Cruel Santino and Lone had new stuff, those both sound instantly amazing. And of course love the Mui Zyu song, the clear 'single' from a really great album.

soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Saturday, 3 February 2024 16:41 (one year ago)

Space Ghost or Fred P for me.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 3 February 2024 16:55 (one year ago)

I’m noticing 5 tracks in here that were not nominated in the first place which might explain why they were sole voters:

ANOHNI, Tsundere Twintails, SZA, De De Mouse and Lone
