Playing “Kollage” for the first time. I’ve never kept up with CRJ but this seems very un-CRJ, not in a negative way though! You could probably sneak this into a shoegaze playlist.

Fred P’s “On the Beach” is 10 minutes of what one might call upscale tropical steakhouse house pop (if, like me, one isn’t great with house genre tag descriptors). You could far worse, this is wonderful.

Fred P's dropped a lot of goodness in the last couple of years and deserves the attention of all Larry Heard fans.

Tempted to ignore my own three "tactical" picks here (Fred, Mui Zyu, ASG) and vote 'iPlan' tho.

The Jessica Ekomane might be ambient and thus not my usual bag, but the sound design is pretty spectacular. If you like good sound design, check it out!

there's some good stuff here that i found out through the noms thread. Obvs had to vote for my own nom, Balotelli, but I liked Cruel Santino, iPlan, Skeng and a good few others

She’s released one great full length (Multivocal in 2019) and I wish there was more, but she seems to be a live artist more than a recording artist

I meant to nominate that Lone track, but then completely forgot, so I ended up putting it in my first place spot at the very last minute as a write in. Definitely worth a listen, a return to his roots, with tons of energy.

Two of mine here. I must confess I didn't give much thought to rankings this year but I would stan for my number 1 - Fantastic Man's Beyond Control. I'm a sucker for all the early 90s euro piano house revival stuff around just now but it's a particularly fine example with ethereal vocal snippets taking it higher. Also comfortably my most listened to tune when running last year so gave it the vote

i voted Space Ghost as my #2 -- he's great across the board, highly recommend checking out his 2022 album Private Paradise, which is largely the same vibe.

Space Ghost is brilliant. think I've charted something of his every year for the past few, but not 2023

NewJeans - Zero was my #1. I know people dislike it because it's a commercial (I think), but I think the rhythmic build is incredible, and the best they've ever done. I love the way the rhythm switches in the chorus.

Grecco Romank - 'Piss Baby' at The Others Way

I think I’ve been to every Grecco show in Tāmaki Makaurau, but something about this one was exceptionally lit, and felt very special. In particular - ‘Piss Baby’. You could barely hear Billie’s stunning, classically trained demon-angel-baby voice over the heaving crowd, screaming every word and writhing in salacious glee. It was diabolical in the best way, and brought about a sense of elation akin only to the vibes at the Blood Rave in Blade.

i don't dislike it because it's a commercial but because I really hate the chorus. It reminds me of the navy recruiting song from the Simpsons lol

Right, the melody is bad - is it a jingle? - but the rhythm! The way it all stops, and the small yelps that gets a bit delayed the third time. I love it!

i agree with roz about the "zero" chorus, it's really weak. there is cool stuff going on in the track otherwise though

"Bass Jam" my #1, one of Danny Brown and Paul White's greatest moments together (production reminds me of some of White's solo stuff, esp. "Running on a Rainy Day"). can't resist songs about families in awe of / communicating through music, this expresses it so beautifully

Everything I've been hearing by Fred P is great, esp. been checking out the new "DJs are the Original Expats" series. Didn't realize Cruel Santino and Lone had new stuff, those both sound instantly amazing. And of course love the Mui Zyu song, the clear 'single' from a really great album.
