scott seward's 45 collection (i am not john peel)

i don't collect 45s. but, uh, you know how it goes. one thing leads to another and you've got boxes of them. things that looked cool to me. shiny. fun. weird. a lot of stuff that i had never heard or heard of. things that made me curious. NOT ALL GREAT. i always mean to make tape comps of them - and i have over the years - but i get busy. i figure i can share some here. i'll do one a day. not a good sign that the first two i pulled out of a box weren't on Youtube. i will start randomly in completely mundane fashion. (also going to start a youtube playlist as a i go...now there's an idea.)

jan & dean before dean. hats off to arnold ginsburg. my copy is actually an 80s repro! the kind of repro oldies dudes would buy out of the back of goldmine magazine back in the day. there were guys at record shows that would sell nothing but r&b and doo wop bootleg 45s back then. the market was rabid so even new copies were easy to sell.

scott seward, Monday, 29 January 2024 16:06 (one year ago)

the decline of the allentown 45-only record fair has been something to see tbh.

keep going scott!
i put a high school kids cover of 'it's all over now baby blue' on youtube the other day. i think it counts as community service.

The Lively Set/Jack & The Beans - There's Nothing Like Coffee (Straight Ahead Records - 1966)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2Mjoscqz0k

scott seward, Tuesday, 30 January 2024 15:53 (one year ago)

the lively set are the vocals. jack & the beans the instrumental group. a-side is vocal version. b-side the instrumental. and probably just billy mure and the usual gang of session peeps. guessing the label belonged to sascha burland. his name on all three releases listed on discogs. probably set up for commercial work. and yes of course i have the picture sleeve.

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 January 2024 15:23 (one year ago)

not really sure why i kept the demetriss tapp single...maybe i kept it to check out later having enjoyed previous demetriss tapp singles. "another victory" is fun. not the most memorable 45 though.

A Sunday twofer!

scott seward, Sunday, 4 February 2024 17:32 (one year ago)

The Eggheads were the Keytones and most copies of the Chelsea single have white stickers with the song titles and Eggheads band name over the old labels that said Keytones. My educated guess? There was totally another Keytones that threatened to sue or something. Thus, Eggheads were born.

scott seward, Sunday, 4 February 2024 17:34 (one year ago)

this is what it looked like. i love that black Chelsea label so much.

scott seward, Friday, 9 February 2024 16:20 (one year ago)

Wallace Terrell Denson

1936 - July 1, 2006.

Born and raised in Columbus, Georgia, Denson migrated to New York City in 1957. While pursuing a career as a songwriter and poet, he worked the night shift at the U.S. Post Office, a job he held for three decades and retained even when his musical aspirations became a reality. In 1959 he teamed with composer Luther Dixon to write 'Mama Said', inspired by the memory of Denson's own mother, Lillie. In a 1996 interview, he recalled her as someone "always happy, always smiling". His family recalls him the same way. "He was the kind of man who kept everyone's spirits up," said Ann Denson, his wife since 1960 and mother of his four children. "He loved to write poetry. He played the keyboard by ear and banged on his bongo drums when working on a song."

Recorded by the Shirelles' two years later, the song rocketed into the U.S. Top 5 and remains one of the more memorable cuts of the girl group era. The Shirelles recorded a number of additional Denson/Dixon collaborations, including 'Stop The Music', 'The Things I Want To Hear (Pretty Words)', 'Love Is A Swingin' Thing' and 'Blue Holiday'. Denson's other compositions include Gene Pitney's 'Backstage (I'm Lonely)', Gene McDaniels' 'A Tear', Tammy Montgomery's 'It's Mine' and the Ronettes' 'Recipe For Love'.

His attempts to launch his own recording career in 1962 as Denny Denson and as Wee Willie Denson on the Rayna and May labels, respectively, met with little success, although he appeared on television shows such as American Bandstand and, later, Soul Train. In 1995 he returned to his native Columbus, making headlines six years later when he won $3m in the Georgia lottery. "Winning didn't change him a bit," said his daughter, Danette Powell. "There was no difference."

the Youtube video says this is Nadine Sutherland but it isn't. Discogs says her name is Nadine Hart. though Discogs also provides a link on the entry for this single that goes to Nadine Sutherland. but it isn't her. doesn't sound like her in the slightest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loEf7fHC2KA

scott seward, Saturday, 24 February 2024 19:58 (one year ago)

i used to have a really nice copy of that leroy brown album. oof. i try really hard to block out memories of all the amazing reggae i have sold over the years and will probably never see again unless i win the lottery. but hey i was the one who wanted to have kids, right? right? i can't remember. african/latin/reggae records i sold for years because i had to and they sell so good. you gotta do what you gotta do. i wanted my store to look snazzy.

anyhoo, enough crying. i held on to the single and its probably worth more than the album!

also: one of my favorite songs on earth. kills me every time.

scott seward, Saturday, 24 February 2024 20:02 (one year ago)

been too busy to post here. so much to do. record show next saturday! saw my pal bob fay yesterday! he bought some 45s from me. he loves 45s. he liked all the early 80s boston-area 45s i had out since he's a bosstown cat.

scott seward, Saturday, 24 February 2024 20:04 (one year ago)

three weeks pass...

used to love this thread back in the day and just haven't been keeping up since revive. a hiatus is helpful, will catch up this weekend. i hadn't heard that leroy brown before for instance - it's beautiful.

Fizzles, Friday, 22 March 2024 07:23 (one year ago)

i'll be back. i've been soooooo busy. but part of my busyness has been due to cleaning and pricing tons of 45s that i got! i just haven't been at actual work in my store in...i want to say two weeks. which is crazy. but outside work is still work. i spent a week sorting thru my storage unit in order to move everything to yet another storage unit. because the one i was in was wet. so sad! then another week sorting thru a couple thousand pounds of CDs offsite. i'm a busy bee for an old man.

that was way too much information.

here is one i am keeping from the collection i got. ronnie spector's sister.
