at some point we started projecting all this revolutionary politics onto our pop stars which was a very weird thing to do and I'm not sure why it felt so important at one time and still sort of does if I look at it from a certain angle
they have brought together impressive coalitions that they inevitably let down because they are people as well as symbols of the collective desires of everyone involved. who are still hungry and will hopefully create things that go beyond what the fandoms were ostensibly about

which one would make a better dictator?
― treeship., Sunday, 4 February 2024 17:38 (one year ago)
beyonce would be better at projecting an image for people to invoke to police each other with while keeping her actual role in governance relatively opaque to the average person; taylor would not be able to resist getting personally involved in people's business and she could more effectively weaponise a sense of victimhood even as the most powerful person in the world. I think they would both have vaguely well meaning and selfish motivations and both would end up getting millions of people killed while trying to protect themselves as well as while trying to do what they think is right

I don’t know if this is the thread for it, but the whole “I’m standing up for Taylor against right-wingers freaking out at her on social media” thing is weird to me because all I’ve seen are the responses, few to none of the supposed freak-outs. Are right-wingers really freaking out, or is kind of a ginned-up meme?

there are definitely misogynist trolls whining about her, but it's lead to some bizarre overcorrections, with people basically claimed she single-handedly saved the NFL from collapsing.

On the NFL / “they’re cutting to her toooften” tip, I saw a thread where a guy was like, “Why didn’t Gisele get this kind of abuse from Patriots fans??,” and others were like, “Uh, she did. And Jessica Simpson from Romo fans. That’s how these people are; it’s not a unique conspiracy against Swift…”

sure Gisele and esp Simpson did to degrees but it wasn't close to this and didn't have the bizarre right wing conspiracy thing. but not comparable imo. (also the NFL really went in on Swift in terms of coverage, the whole thing was elevated to a different level but also Swift is an entire other level of fame/importance as well)

so unlike fans of....everything else
Yeah I’m just talking about the complaints of them showing her too much on TV, or being a “distraction” to Kelce’s playing or w/e… I have no idea about the right-wing conspiracy thing; I’ve only seen people reacting to it, haven’t seen any examples of the thing itself (although I’m sure it exists)

i think the big difference is like 90 percent of them probably never heard of gisele before she was tom brady's GF (i hadn't) and swift is coming off a year where's she's been as close to an old school 80s michael jackson level dominating the culture type figure

Kelce also advocated for getting vaccinated I think, which isn't popular in certain circles
I think its more deep seated than fact she might campaign for Biden with the latter group. Its resentment. From a right wing perspective, Swift and Kelce, historically should be "their thing". A blonde blue eyed pop country singer and a football player for the Chiefs? How have the libs stolen these (along with the military and the FBI and the CIA)
The two groups are blurred as well, on the wingnut end, all these things are part of the deepstate, and on the run of the mill end they're all part of the establishment. And "the deepstate" and "the establishment", are increasingly becoming the same thing, "the man".
― anvil, Monday, 5 February 2024 05:33 (one year ago)
They're resentful of all non-CHUDs and Swift being an apolitical otherwise-wholesome capitalist celebrity confounds them further. She came from the country world, she should be one of them, must be something else going on.
There are women in country who are more aggressively not-CHUDs (like Maren Morris) but they're not famous enough to generate the broad spectrum of resentment.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 5 February 2024 05:56 (one year ago)
I think not being more aggressively not-chud compounds the resentment (as well as making her more effective). Makes her more difficult to otherize (same for Kelce too). It highlights a greater loss
― anvil, Monday, 5 February 2024 06:06 (one year ago)
an apolitical
To her credit, Swift has not been entirely apolitical - in 2018 she endorsed Marsha Blackburn's dem opponent in Tennessee, and she's led voter drives. Of course, she was unable to move the needle much in that election. I guess we'll see if she's more powerful, or chooses to be, on a national scale. I hope so!
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 5 February 2024 13:21 (one year ago)
yeah she has been coded as liberal since 2018 at least but likely earlier. even if she wasn't making political endorsements, she was singing paeans to New York City and calling herself a feminist in 2014.this is a good overview of her relationship to the right over the years (from Rolling Stone): https://archive.ph/xCG8Y

From what I've seen this is just how people facilitate maximum engagement on social media...
the opportunity presents itself via an attack on a popular figure or cause, and/or a general cause of some sort gains momentum and everyone rushes to jump on board as quickly as possible to ride the wave-content is generated reacting/dunking on the attack or just the notion of it -content is generated with "taking a stand" posts in the race to be seen as the megaphone holder leading the crowd-in the competition for the most eyeballs/shares, to GET NOTICED, accounts may resort to "bizarre overcorrections" as mentioned in order to stand out from the crowd of otherwise similar sentiments
Another related strategy is to try to become the hub for the latest developments of this week's popular cause or outrage, starting with or milking the above posting techniques throughout and secretly hoping it doesn't fizzle out too quickly
Also, personal algorithms feed users a single side of the issue, likely omitting the other side and making it look even more imaginary or blown out of proportion
