answers the question "what if the blue nile made freestyle" and so many more, released one of the very best albums of last year and already has new material on the way
two tracks from his new ep, catching chickens (out march 22) were premiered here: https://www.nts.live/shows/the-breakfast-show-flo/episodes/the-breakfast-show-flo-31st-january-2024
"hand on me" at 1:24:51
"hell of a ride" at 1:37:59
both sound great
― ufo, Friday, 9 February 2024 16:47 (two years ago)
he's also said there's a new album, the passionate ones planned for later this year too
― ufo, Friday, 9 February 2024 16:58 (two years ago)
He/they opened for Dry Cleaning last year, was a revelation kind of like L’Rain’s live set.

i do like "hand on me," it doesn't live up to the highlights from the last album, but what does?

oh "romance in me" is on the ep too, i still need to dig through all the pre-album material because there's like a whole album's worth
― ufo, Thursday, 22 February 2024 11:03 (two years ago)
confirmed all the pre-album tracks are wonderful, he should put out a compilation of them all

i'm interested especially because you said "arthur russell does freestyle" and ufo said "blue nile does freestyle" in the original thread― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 7:33 AM (yesterday)

re: this from the other thread yeah those three are all very good reference points for their vibe which is really something special
― ufo, Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:57 (two years ago)
Love a lot of this stuff, but I just have to drop in a little shout for the rework of Dry Cleaning's "Gary Ashby," which is super-charming and really clever. (Every tortoise deserves explosions and chase scenes!)

Yeah finally got around to a listen to some of his stuff the other day -- really good!
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 February 2024 23:57 (two years ago)
thirding the live show, definitely the best solo+laptop set I've seen
― soup of magpies (geoffreyess), Friday, 23 February 2024 17:07 (two years ago)
the new ep rules, of course
― ufo, Friday, 22 March 2024 08:23 (two years ago)
here is a spotify playlist of all the non-ep/lp tracks, chronologically.
if it wasn't already clear, i am completely on board here.
― interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Friday, 22 March 2024 08:46 (two years ago)
also i've figured out who this reminds me of!
terence trent d'arby / sananda maitreya. no malice intended in either direction -- it's the "genres-melting-together-in-real-time" feeling. love love love!
― interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Friday, 22 March 2024 08:56 (two years ago)
or wait -- no!
ttd / sm if they were in the associates!
whatever the case, this is definitely approved for all audiences.

opening track exactly the sort of weird banger i'd hoped for
― imago, Friday, 22 March 2024 09:16 (two years ago)
compiling that odds+ends playlist, i've already found a "lost" gem in the back catalogue-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91X5hEVFCT8tesia+nourished by time - "that's the way it goes" (2022)
idk who tesia is, but they have other stuff on streaming that's also very worthwhile. kinda losing the plot here, but check out their latest thing from february:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txUh_vHaX3Utesia - "when the sun goes down" (2024)

the new ep is unsurprisingly excellent, "hell of a ride," "had ya called," and "romance in me" (not to mention "hand on me") are some of the best things i've heard from them
― the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 25 March 2024 17:00 (two years ago)
Very much looking to see the live show here in a couple of months.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 March 2024 19:36 (two years ago)

awesome show yesterday, the earlier solo setup didn't feel limiting or anything but having two more musicians now (incl. phenomenal bassist) opens up so many possibilities for Marcus's performance / means of inhabiting the music
― willips brighton the quorners (geoffreyess), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 22:54 (one year ago)
Nice. Will be seeing him a week from tonight.

Yup, good stuff for sure.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 June 2025 21:44 (eleven months ago)
new album sounding excellent. more adventurous and the hooks are a little less obvious than on either of the last two projects, but they will eventually sink their teeth in. the freestyle/hi-nrg touches (like the instrumental break in the middle of "crazy people") are always very welcome
― gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Friday, 22 August 2025 15:23 (eight months ago)
"when the war is over"...jesus
― gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Friday, 22 August 2025 15:39 (eight months ago)
yeah, this strikes me as a natural evolution in sound. preview tracks were definitely growers, and the rest of the album has a similar energy on first impression. really strong pace to the album, as well: 12 songs, 45 minutes. each track has such a distinct identity from one another; this feels like one of the most densely packed full lengths i've heard in while.
― austinato (Austin), Friday, 22 August 2025 16:18 (eight months ago)
ahhhh so excited, hoping to pick this up later
― moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Friday, 22 August 2025 17:03 (eight months ago)
Godddddd the textures on this album
― Tim F, Saturday, 23 August 2025 08:15 (eight months ago)
there's a lot to like here but i don't think it reaches the same highs as the debut and it's definitely weirder & less focused overall
― ufo, Saturday, 23 August 2025 10:10 (eight months ago)
Washed over me on first listen but Im getting into it now. "It's Time" is standing out for me atm
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 5 September 2025 11:31 (eight months ago)
unbelievable show the other night, as much a leap from the last one i saw as that was from the first. live bass *and* guitar, a whole island of synths & sequencers, everything just so vivid and enveloping. and his voice was pretty raspy and sounded so good.
― moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Friday, 26 September 2025 03:11 (seven months ago)
No idea how i stumbled on this music but "When The War Is Over" is an instant classic and up in the higher EOY echelons for me
― Now read it backwards. (dog latin), Sunday, 28 September 2025 13:07 (seven months ago)

Have to admit, took me a couple listens to warm up to his voice, but now I'm fully on board. The Passionate Ones is a very good album
