BAD LIKE BROOKYLN DANCEHALLSpecial Features: Enjoy an assortment of mocktails from Zurena Caribbean Tropical Drink Mixers following the screeningAs young Jamaican immigrants across Brooklyn were coming of age during the 1980s and 1990s, they were drawn to dancehall music as a way to stay connected to life back home. Soon, New York City would become known as the 15th Parish of Jamaica, as DJs, sound systems and energetic dancing swept the city's underground music scene alongside hip-hop. Shot in NYC and Kingston, Jamaica, under the guidance of executive producer Shaggy, BAD LIKE BROOKLYN DANCEHALL charts the remarkable rise of an under-acknowledged music genre through never-before-seen archival footage and interviews with dancehall luminaries such as Sean Paul and Ding Dong, pointing to the ever-present influence of dancehall music on a younger generation of Caribbean-Americans and beyond. (Note adapted from A9NY Studio.) DIR/PROD Ben DiGiacomo; DIR Dutty Vannier; SCR/PROD Amy DiGiacomo; PROD AJ Leon, Ramfis Myrthil, Jay Will. Jamaica/U.S., 2023, color, 93 min. NOT RATED

Bayka album is good.
Does any of the trap dancehall artists have a great project/album? Skeng's Gvnam Shift might be my favorite track of the decade so far.

So there was not a rolling reggae and dancehall 2025 thread?
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 18:20 (six days ago)
I don't think so. Speaking for myself, my interest in dancehall fell off in 2023 or so, and whenever I get FOMO about my old favourite genre, checking out recent stuff on youtube usually leads me to conclude that not much has changed since I left. Lyrics and production still seem like they're in the same zone as they were when I realized I wasn't enjoying filling my head with such dark and frequently joyless music. I saw gospodin mention the new Skeng on another thread; I listened to half and yeah I would have liked it a lot in 2022, but it sounds dreary to me now.
I remain hopeful something/one could inject fresh ideas or affects into the genre and push it in a new direction or two. It's weird that a music scene that thrived and mutated by taking on sounds from all over the world has become pretty insular and lyrically monomaniacal, otoh maybe its problems reflect a general lack of dynamism.
All that whingeing aside — and I'm sure I'm missing cool stuff or have developed antipathies that are purely subjective — I do hear something now and then I like. This Armanii track for example:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VbjbBYmofs"JUMP (BOUNCE)"
Or Ayetian who's got humour, theatrical flair, and verbal energy (maybe it's his Haitian roots):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN7JPYwH9Xo"Wah Yo Deh Pan"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkzbGi4hww8"Guh Dung"
The various "Tip" mixes are worth a listen too.
I've occasionally mentioned new reggae on dedicated threads, but there seems to be near zero interest on ilm. Even Koffee's return elicited nothing, which was kinda shocking even if people weren't feeling it (I think it's good!).
