Best Album on My Favourite Albums of......2004!!

In the thick of the download era now. I only have physical copies of two of the albums (Trashcan Sinatras, Hot Chip) on this list although that might have a lot to do with my financial situation at the time too.

Honourable mentions:

Jesu - s/t
Pinback - Summer in Abaddon

last exit no contest

ivy., Saturday, 17 February 2024 18:51 (one year ago)

everything is very of its time except for arthur russell who was behind time. or maybe he was under time. to the left. plus his is all music from a different time. a time that didn't exist in time.

scott seward, Saturday, 17 February 2024 19:31 (one year ago)

Mmm Food

Chris L, Saturday, 17 February 2024 19:51 (one year ago)

Lambchop off this list, though "Weightlifting" off Trashcan Sinatras would be the favorite track.

It hurts me to acknowledge that these are 20 years old…2004 was the first time that I had a driver’s license and the first year that I really got into seeking out new music hard…for me the answer has to be The Dirty South…I bought it the day it came out (already had Southern Rock Opera and Decoration Day) and as a high schooler growing up feeling confused about being a Southerner their music resonated with me like nothing else out there…I don’t play them much these days, but I saw them like 30-50 times between 2004 and 2009 and they definitely had a major impact on my life.

I listened to a ton of Real Gone, Sonic Nurse, Showtime, A Grand Don’t Come For Free, Ta Det Lungt, The Doldrums, Louden Up Now, and Sung Tongs (not pictured) that year…the first two would probably hold up and I still like pre-Feels Animal Collective, but not sure if I’d still get into the others.

Giving some love to that Delays album.

Bee OK, Saturday, 17 February 2024 22:05 (one year ago)

A personal toss-up btw Arthur and Madvillain (honourable mentions to Fennesz and Stereolab)--Madvillain comp blew my mind at the time (and still ofc does), but gotta go w/ Arthur--Sung Tongs was also massive for me this year

I don't care where just fart (away) (Craig D.), Saturday, 17 February 2024 23:23 (one year ago)

Teedra Moses definitely, then Junior Boys

Tim F, Sunday, 18 February 2024 10:08 (one year ago)

It's kind of a modest record in the grand scheme of things and certainly compared to much else on this list but that Tortoise album still gives me a lot of pleasure tbh

Blueberry Boat just over the Arthur Russell

Never thought 20 years later the two I had listened to the most would be so tainted now.

Last Exit

wherewasyou, Sunday, 18 February 2024 17:03 (one year ago)

If I cross what I listened to the most then with what holds up for me now, it's Real Gone.

I'd like to hear Last Exit again though, and never really listened to that Bill Frisell album or Sonic Nurse, and will rectify that.

Pretty tough choices, among the few I remember in any detail. Nashville Scene ballot comments may help---Dirty South:14 songs, 8 damn good, 2 pretty good, 4 too tawky, and the tawk aint that stimulatin.'Mainly blaming Hood as main writer and voice, but acknowledging good combo ("doom's cut open, Truckers roll through" etc.)

Arthur's alb, Pazz & Jop:

Not too surprising to read that Arthur Russell took his music everywhere, walking through the city with headphones on, seeing how his latest mixes sounded in different (passing) scenes. He's audibly the young man from the plains, the wide open spaces, keening and rolling his oatey notes like the Midwest-to-Cali (Beach Boys') Wilson brothers.("Rooted"? well everybody's from somewhere and somewhere else, 'specially in suburbia.) Don't wanta be fenced in, but walk long enough and you're sweeping through the city, through the veil of illusion and allusion, with your nice-boy cello, and your get down/ambitious/romantic, yet somehow stoical dance music, that's also being messed with as it comes into existence. Fine, but you know the movie where Woody Allen's marching with his high school band, having to sit down and play his cello, then get up and run to keep up, so he can sit down and play again? Arthur's seen that too. He keeps walking.

Maybe I didn't hear Leviathan that year, but mentioned it in a Blood Mountain-based feature:
...tales of Moby Dick, Captain Ahab, Thor, and lava lovers on 2004's Leviathan...---damn, this is hard! Even without letting myself think about several others.
Voted Calling Out of Context, which goes best w my current listening tendencies.

Lots of great stuff here: Waits, Furnaces, DBT, Madvillain, Kanye, SY, Dizzee, but I’ll vote for the same #1 I had back then, Pretty Toney.

You know what, in my mind this was a great year for music but this list is nowhere near as strong as 2003.

Still, some great stuff here. Real Gone, Blueberry Boat, Ta Det Lungt, A Grand Don't Come For Free, even Funeral (easily the best Arcade Fire).

I've gone for Mountain Goats here. My favourite by them of the ones I've heard

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 February 2024 02:53 (one year ago)

In my head the odd numbered years in the 00s were better for albums and the even numbered years were better for standalone tracks and DJ mixes.
