Great moments on the ride cymbal

Late with this response to Al's hi-hat thread, but I gotta say I smile & nod when the drummer gets all sizzly on the ride. Because I'm old, my No. 1 is Roger Hawkins on "Chain of Fools." Surely you have better and more recent examples...

If we all weren't sick to death of it - wouldn't Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll" run away with this one?

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Sunny Murray ownz this thread.

I thought "Rock & Roll" was played mostly on a slightly-open high hat.

Do drum machines count? Because Underworld's "Twist" is just pure mint in this respect.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

obviously instrumental surf music owns this thread and before you all groan and dismiss this post, check out 'the endless summer theme' by the sandals. amazing ride cymbal

Maybe.. .Haven't seen "The Song Remains the Same" since 7th grade - but I do remember high school cover bands' drummers technique - showy.

Wu-Tang Clan's 'Chamber Music' is an obvious winner. It's sampled, but when did that make anything less classic?
And also, there's the last minute or so of 'Sexy MF' by Prince. When I'm exposed to that song while drunk, my right arm always thinks it belongs to Vinnie C....however-you-might-wanna-spell-this-guys-last-name.

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

in "All Your Way" by Morphine, those perfect accents on the dome of the ride during the main sax riff just kill me.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, Neil Peart to thread?

Xibalba (xibalba), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Vinnie C ??? Vinnie Colaiuta ... anytime the maestro sits behind a drum kit = great moments

bahtology, Thursday, 5 December 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, yes, Chamber Music is golden, as is Vinnie Colaiuta. That's him on Sexy MF??

briania, Thursday, 5 December 2002 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Elvin Jones playing Afro-Blue from Coltrane Live at Birdland.
Pete Laroca Sims playing Sin Street on Turkish Women at the Bath
also, all of those early 90s techno/rave records that have the 909(?) ride on the offbeat.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 5 December 2002 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

briania: no, no, i don't think so. i was just namedropping one of the musos' favorite drummers - but whose last name i couldn't spell ...

Talk Talk, "Ascension Day"

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 5 December 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Sober' by Tool has flapping rides all over it I believe, like a monstrous pulse - Carey's feel for disturbing texture is unerring and his cymbal work more often than not is exemplary.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Thursday, 5 December 2002 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the final second of "Noise Annoys"

zebedee, Thursday, 5 December 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Towards the end of Neu!'s Hallogallo when Dinger starts tinkling on the ride - so exciting.

Arthur Andersen, Thursday, 5 December 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Danny Heifetz (Mr. Bungle) throws some mean insane goose-pimplin' ride cymbal zaniness all over Disco Volante, esp. in "Carry Stress in the Jaw", "Desert Search for Techno Allah", and "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz".

The Shipping News, "Actual Blood"

Every time Tony Williams touched it, at least in the 60s. Fuck it, every great jazz drummer is defined by their sound and feel on the ride cymbal.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 December 2002 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
My fondest ride cymbal memory was seeing Hüsker Dü live once, and Grant Hart was wearing that sucker out all night, to the point where it began to sound like you were in an airplane hangar with a jet running beside you.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Saturday, 22 March 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The fourth "YEAH" ("She Loves You")

"What I Say" (Ray Charles)

Burr (Burr), Saturday, 22 March 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ray Charles - "What'd I Say?"
Talk Talk - "New Grass"

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

as of late, the greatest ride cymbal tickling (amongst other great percussion graft) to hit my ears has been that of Tony Oxley's on a coupla Tomasz Stanko albums from the mid-90s

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh, great choices Evan.
