Mariah Carey: Why is she back?

Wasn't she going to bless us all with an extended absence after her much-ballyhooed mental breakdown? What's with this new album shit? What's the problem? I feel robbed! She was barely gone at all! I was hoping for some meaningful respite from her plague-like presence on the music scene, goddammit!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex had a vision of love/And that was all that it turned out to be.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I like a bunch of Mariah tracks, but her new album is called, uh, Charmbracelet which is the lamest name for an album in the history of recorded music.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And why isn't her new album produced by the Neptunes or Timbaland, like every other respectable major label puppet?

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Even worse, it's basically fifteen ballads!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What "music scene" is Mariah part of? You might as well start a post cursing Vanilla Coke for being a plague on the carbonated beverage scene.

Paula G., Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

This will pass fast. New record company means a lot of hype, but the headache will be over soon...be patient, Alex.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Why is she back? Because $49 MM or whatever it was she got in that settlement wasn't enough to live on, obviously.

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

By "music scene," I didn't mean a cozy little community of bands all mucking together with a shared sense of cause and sentiment, I suppose I meant the "major music marketplace," her campaign assualting virtually every media avenue available, from advertisements on the sides of buses through endless rotation on the music channels.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv. she indulges herself too much in the ballads, but on the other hand, when she's tried *proper* RnB she just sounds like a million other singers. So I like "Dream Lover" and "Fantasy" - uptempo but still very Pop.

B.Rad (Brad), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha "Get Mariah's new album _Charmbracelet_, out on Kranky Records NOW!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If Mariah's album had been on Kranky, would there have been a space between "charm" and "bracelet"?

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, but it would've definitely been written in all lower-case.

hstencil, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

She was just on MTV for that interview special, and I actually really feel sorry for her - this coming from a hardcore Mariahater. She just seems like a nice, if terribly misguided, person who really had to undergo an emormous amount of public and private pain last year, what with her breakdown. Maybe I'm just feeling too emotional right now to try to say something snippy and mean, but I just felt sympathetic when she was talking about how Glitter didn't at all turn out to be what she wanted.

Even more revealing was what she said regarding being biracial, and how she can put the number of people she's been sexually intimate with "on less than one hand" (what does that even mean?). Is that revelatory ?She said it's because she has major issues with protecting her body, and it's influenced by what she "saw in her childhood" - it seemed to imply that she was talking about abuse, but when John Norris mentioned pregnancy and STDs she just nodded and said yeah.

Of course, none of this rationalizes or in any way explains why she prancies around as a human sausage in those godawful Heartbreaker and Butterfly vids, but she said that that's just her image and she really is very sexually conservative. (Why this dichotomy then?) She wants the loving, committed husband, three kids and white picket fence, in her own words.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with me today that I'm actually posting some sort of pro-Mariah thread - I would've guessed me finishing a paper on time would be more likely. But I dunno. She's just another human being. Maybe I'm weary of hating on her, and am projecting it onto Xtina...

I miss the video of "Somedays," one of her very, very few (there are two) semi-good songs (both early 90s ballads - I forget the other one, but the video involved the talent show thing in the church or something where she rises like a bursting tulip fromt he stage) - don't you remember ? She walks through the halls of the school in like a flannel shirt, she seemed normal. What a mindfuck, that Mariah

V or maybe Vee, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely understand some sympathy. It's clear they've got her wacked up on happy pills or something. But she's incredibly egotistical and a multimillionaire. She's rich enough to get help and she's old enough that I don't have to excuse her lack of maturity and her contradictiveness.

Also, call me Good Charlotte, but I have a hard time with someone who's been stinking rich for well over a decade who's done nothing but complain about how tired she is and how her crappy acting in a crappy movie didn't make her a bigger star.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And why isn't her new album produced by the Neptunes or Timbaland, like every other respectable major label puppet?

Beautifully put, man. Beautiful.

Jay K (Jay K), Thursday, 5 December 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ew. My god, I just saw the video for her new single "Through the Rain" -- a gutwrenchingly awful semi-reworking of "Hero", it sounds like. Something seems to have gone horribly wrong with her voice -- it seems really off somehow (I'm waiting for Dan's expert opinion)

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 5 December 2002 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like either her voice is shot to hell or she just doesn't care anymore. Her voice used to be so powerful; now it's just breathy and strained.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 December 2002 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she needed more than 5 hours sleep.

God, but I love/d her 1st album.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

She's back because Satan Claus has come to town.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, he was saying "ho" LONG before she showed up.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

She should make a Starsailor-esque vocal freakout and be done with it.

Prude, Thursday, 5 December 2002 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Heartbreaker was a great video. The remix video was even better.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 December 2002 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

dude I saw that thing: I've worked in mental health for 10+ years: she appears to be groovin' behind some heavvvvvy medication

J0hn Darni3ll3 (J0hn Darni3ll3), Thursday, 5 December 2002 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

She was on TOTP doing the new single the other week. I quite liked it. There was a mini firework display halfway through as well. Her voice did sound a bit strange actually on that occasion which I attributed to the sound of the mic and there being no reverb on it.

David (David), Thursday, 5 December 2002 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Through the Rain" sounds weird because she changes up her vocal style every couple of syllables, from clear and emotive to breathy and quiet, and it seems unnatural, like the "clear and emotive" notes were punched in with no regard for how they matched with the original vocal.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 5 December 2002 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the rhodes sound reminds me of pretty aphex twin with mariah singing

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 5 December 2002 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Her breathy techinique DOES NOT WORK. She seems to lost the entirety of her head voice and can no only whisper or belt. Someone needs to remind her of the concept of "head voice".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

If Dang weren't married, I'm sure he could teach her the concept of "head voice". Hee.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Now we're going to work on your 'ahh' and 'ooh', baby..."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The question is Why is Whitney Houston back?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The answer: She needs to pay for Bobby Browns court charges.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you see her interview with Diane Sawyer? She is loonier than Michael Jackson!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw part of it...she's completely oblivious to how whacked out she appears.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

damn it I missed it. It was last night wasn't it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"$730,000? I wish I spent $730,000 on drugs! Where are the RECEIPTS? I wanna see the receipts!"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is not safe.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 December 2002 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I just read that she coverd Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" on her new album. Anyone heard it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 6 December 2002 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Same old, same old....

hmm, Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, that doesn't look good, although, and I'm not really defending her, she was signing CDs, and that's kind of a situation where it's probably good for her to just keep signing the whole time and not use her hands for anything else, if there was a long line and they had limited time for it and all. if she has a human beverage holder all the time, though, that's a different story.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 23 March 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

actually shes mixed

+++, Thursday, 23 March 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Popbitch has been reporting her human beverage holders at UK events for years, down to the putting-the-straw-in-her-mouth part.

I'm jealous. I wish I was rich and crazy enough to have someone do all the work of drinking for me.

Bullshit....

I saw mariah on some commercial yesterday for a phone or something, I don't know because I had to mute it because she was "singing" and I was starting to convulse like that guy who has a physical reaction to Mary Hart's voice - can I get an Amen?

Dave AKA Dave (dave225.3), Friday, 24 March 2006 13:15 (nineteen years ago)

No.

Dan (Sorry) Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 March 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

oh, that was supposed to be "a namen." Who's the German equivalent of Mariah Carey?

Dave AKA Dave (dave225.3), Friday, 24 March 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

and pop can't "come back" because by definition it's always popular.

pc user, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

true - but I'm sure a lot of folks bought Nirvana's Nevermind who weren't devout Sub Pop/Amphetamine Reptile/SST/Dischord heads.

and pop can't "come back" because by definition it's always popular.

In this case, I'd suggest "pop" refers to a style and sensibility of music, and not the literal definition of "popular", but whatever.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago)

there's always the glitzy, showbizzy, dancin' around style of pop.
there was in the early 90s.

is "pop" your code for "black"?

pc user, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

dally, Friday, 14 December 2007 18:49 (seventeen years ago)

I wouldn't not surprised.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

I would not be surprised*.

The Brainwasher, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

To back up to ballads, I love me some Aaliyah (though I'm always a bit worried that she's the "safe" hipster r&b choice) ballads, and love some Rufus and Whitney ballads, but the vast majority of Carey stuff that I've heard just bores me to tears. She seems like the very epitome of melismatics and ornamentation over substance. But I also don't understand what people like about Alicia Keys either, so I might be a bad listener.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

i need to hear some aaliyah for sure

Surmounter, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

(though I'm always a bit worried that she's the "safe" hipster r&b choice)

Why do you worry about this sort of thing? Why not just like what you like instead of worrying how it will go over with your chain-wallet'd Oberlin friends?

dally, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

I would not be surprised*.

I've been a fairly regular contributor to ILX since about 2001. Calling someone a racist based exclusively on their testimony regarding pop music is so fucking offsides I cannot even begin to put it into words. COME TO THINK OF IT, I DON'T OWN ANY BARABARA STREISAND ALBUMS EITHER -- CLEARLY I'M AN ANTI-SEMITE!

Calling someone a dick or a douchebag or a moron is one thing. Calling them a racist is something a great deal more damning and not something to be taken lightly.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

lol oberlin.

Surmounter, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago)

Wait, did you just say you've never heard Aaliyah? And this is Surmounter talking? My head hurts.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:39 (seventeen years ago)

alex, i don't think you are racist.

pc user, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:55 (seventeen years ago)

is now a good time to point out that I keep misreading the thread title as "Mariah Carey: Why is she black?"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

calling people racist (sexist, homphobic, heterosexist, eurocentric, etc etc) is the sport of choice at ILX.

Hahah, BIG HOOS, me too.

dally, Friday, 14 December 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

"Why do you worry about this sort of thing? Why not just like what you like instead of worrying how it will go over with your chain-wallet'd Oberlin friends?"

Because I recognize that I'm a dilettante when it comes to modern R&B, so I don't want to make broad pronouncements about liking or hating r&b ballads based on what might be an outlier to the genre.

Oh, and because I want to bait ILX poptards like you.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 14 December 2007 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

I'm always a bit worried that she's the "safe" hipster r&b choice

I think you're right. I blame Timbo.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 14 December 2007 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

i think everyone misreads it as that.

see upthread, mentioned here and there.

Mark Clemente, Friday, 14 December 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

what nails it for me and mimi is her lisp, soooooooo sexy...

...and her harmonies. the low one, the high one, the whispery one, the off key one and the sexy one, all layered up to produce one sickly sweet syrupy gooey mess of a song

just smear it all over you and get your partner to lick it off...

...yum

madonnas tunes cant do any of that...

max, Saturday, 15 December 2007 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

ethan's post is funny though. mariah is pretty great.

max, Saturday, 15 December 2007 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

I do kind of wonder though if Mariah recent inclination towards basically whispering is because she's destroyed her voice or because she "prefers to sing that way"(like she claims).. as amazing as "Fly Like a Bird" is, Emotions-era Mariah would have DESTROYED it. But anyway, I can't wait for her new album though the list of producers is kind of meh (WHY IS SHE WORKING WITH STARGATE? PEOPLE SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THEM).

-- The Brainwasher, Friday, December 14, 2007 4:31 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Link

the thing is, i know exactly what you mean, but even if it did signal some deterrioration of her voice, i would still want it exactly that way (like on Fly Like A Bird for ex). i didn't used to appreciate her breathiness, but i look for it now. but you're right, an Emotions-era rendition would be pretty stellar.

Surmounter, Saturday, 15 December 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

she love everything jay say, jay does

pc user, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

WHY IS SHE WORKING WITH STARGATE? PEOPLE SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THEM

Stargate are good for acts that aren't particularly melodic to begin with (Beyonce etc.), but people such as Lionel Richie, who are able to write better melodic songs without the aid of Stargate, and without those annoying dance rhythms in the background, should stay away from them.

Lionel Richie wrote "Hello", he wrote "Still", he wrote "Easy", he wrote "Three Times a Lady", he wrote "Truly", he wrote "All Night Long". There is no way that Stargate will get even close to the greatness of those songs!

The Reverend, Thursday, 20 December 2007 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

"All Night Long" has some pretty annoying dance rhythms going on in the background.

Lionel Richie will never write a song even a nanoillionth as good as "Baby One More Time."

even if she sounds like a whiny whorebag to you, her melodies can still be very strong, contrary to what Geir proposed. you may not like how she sings them but every single by Beyonce has had a pretty catchy melody, in my humble opinion.
