have u guys seen the 'provider' video yet?? they dramatize the song and pharrell rides around on a bike with his shirt off. and tghe guy from blink 182 is in it, too! for some reason. it also features a convenience store. the guy from blink 182 buys some stuff. the other guy does stuff too. chad!! but the thing is the shirt's off. he is a beautiful man and he looks perfect without a shirt on. it's wonderful. oh wait. there's a weird bit at the end where he repeats the chorus in a different way and he tells people to put their peace signs up if they want to live another day. even though he's wearing some kind of army uniform!!! i don't understand. does he like war or not?

Does he touch his chin? (If yes, I might go POSTAL.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Tony Hawk as the cashier guy, too.

Todd Burns, Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

listen. he only touched his chin once. on that one occasion. one single time. you need to put down the hatorade. has usher never touched his chin?

I'm sick of the skater-trash fetish of Pharell Williams. See Kelis's "Young, Fresh & New" et al.

Also, anybody else get the idea he just says shit like "yo, I like Stereolab" because he knows it makes critics cream their pants when hip-hoppers listen to obscure white artists?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

man i know tons of hip hoppers that love stereolab. Thes from PUTS even sampled them on one of their songs

it's the love of analog equipment that gets them there

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

that makes sense, JasonD (I know Busta sampled them, which I assumed was cuz they were on the same label). Though I still detect a little critic-baitin' in his choice of "influences."

so, it's okay.

i think i'm more bothered when people like stereolab talk about liking the neptunes and timbaland. although, i'm not really bothered by that very much either. i try to stay positive.

Why wouldn't hip-hoppers like Stereolab? They're loop heavy, rhythmic/groove oriented, their very patient/organic with their arrangements (as opposed to the rock-n-roller "get to the chorus" kinda thing) and the mix is phat and bassy and full...trade out the deadpan female vox for MCs and it IS hip-hop.

Personally, I think Stereolab has more in common (musically) with The Neptunes/NERD than Air or Radiohead or whatever the hell else I suppose you people might find appropriate.

On the war tip, I saw NERD on David Letterman last Jan or Dec or so, and at the end of the song Pharrell put up a peace sign and said "Peace! ...in the Middle East".
(at which point I grabbed my girlfriend and said "look! he's cool AND principled!")

I doubt he's trolling for crit-luv, since he also claimed to dig America. (The band.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd call that a troll for crit-luv too. Worked for Kool Keith (who at least picked the way cooler Jimmy Castor).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

there's nothing wrong with "A Horse with no Name"

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And there wouldn't be anything wrong with America either if that were the only song they released! I think if he were trolling for crit-luv, he'd probably pick different collaborators. (thank god he doesn't)

Adam A. (Keiko), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I should probably elaborate that Pharrel and Kool Keith were doin' the "ooh la la name-drop goofy obscurity". Unless Keith was reading a lot of Chuck Eddy, then he was just towing the line.

NAME THE GODDAMNED HORSE WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE TO DO IN THE DESERT!

that's all.
