Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 16 March 2024 08:59 (one year ago)

Some great stuff, would lean towards Stars Of The Lid

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Saturday, 16 March 2024 11:18 (one year ago)

Von Sudenfed album also rules very hard

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Saturday, 16 March 2024 11:19 (one year ago)

Kinda feeling like taking the challops-y route and going full dad-rock with Sky Blue Sky

Funding Hostile (Craig D.), Saturday, 16 March 2024 11:57 (one year ago)

Untrue then the field

nxd, Saturday, 16 March 2024 11:58 (one year ago)

Don't love it enough to vote for it/them, but I do remember those Studio releases being an enthusiastically-received and v influential sound palette among the 'cosmic disco'/balearic home-studio electronic producer set (esp those who congregated on the Dream Chimney message board at that time)

Funding Hostile (Craig D.), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:04 (one year ago)

I really like the Good the Bad and the Queen record, but this is either Burial, Stars of the Lid or Wolves in the Throne Room.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:06 (one year ago)

Took me a while to come around to the sedatedness of Sky Blue Sky. "Impossible Germany" is one of their greatest tunes.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:07 (one year ago)

Re:Studio

The Studio - West Coast

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:09 (one year ago)

Untrue, Kala, Underground Kings, Sound of Silver, In Rainbows? Jeez.

My fave MIA and LCD records. I listened to that UGK a ton when it came out. In Rainbows I liked but it's only grown over time. Untrue is iconic.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:27 (one year ago)

I mean I certainly listened a lot to Battles, Bon Iver, Dizzee (I have a soft spot for that one), that particular Of Montreal, Panda Bear, and The Field too.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:30 (one year ago)

A few things that would be on my list:

Erik Enocksson - Farväl Falkenberg
James Blackshaw - The Cloud of Unknowing
Arve Henriksen - Strjon
Primordial - To the Nameless Dead
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
Meg Baird - Dear Companion
Theo Parrish - Sound Sculptures Volume 1
Group Inerane - Guitars From Agadez (Music of Niger)
Dälek - Abandoned Language

Good year!

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:40 (one year ago)

Guitars From Agadez is really good! I'm avoiding compilations though

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:49 (one year ago)

MGMT should really belong in 2008 tbh

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 16 March 2024 12:54 (one year ago)

oh man I absolutely adore that particular Guthrie/budd album I’m voting for that

brimstead, Saturday, 16 March 2024 13:02 (one year ago)

A recent discovery. Beautiful album

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Saturday, 16 March 2024 13:53 (one year ago)

Jens Lekman just ahead of Britney. Lots of great albums here but those two are all time favourites.

kitchen person, Saturday, 16 March 2024 14:02 (one year ago)

graduation was by far the most important to me at the time. now, following my romantic heart and voting for jens

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Saturday, 16 March 2024 16:05 (one year ago)

If the Deerhoof album was on here I’d vote for that!

Not sure what to go with from this list

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 16 March 2024 16:08 (one year ago)

It was between Radiohead and UGK. I went with UGK

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 16 March 2024 16:09 (one year ago)

whoops I voted for Studio before seeing Comicopera, consider it a write-in

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 16 March 2024 16:27 (one year ago)

Only thing here I love with zero reservations is Comicopera

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 16 March 2024 16:42 (one year ago)

This was my favorite year in music to live through - every single week had a great new album out.

birdistheword, Saturday, 16 March 2024 18:24 (one year ago)

I have much love for Sound of Silver.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 16 March 2024 18:26 (one year ago)

I remember hearing The Good, the Bad and the Queen and being thrilled to hear Paul Simenon's bass, it was instantly recognizable. I don't think I've ever listened to the follow-up.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 16 March 2024 18:28 (one year ago)

Pretty much the only thing I still play is the Wyatt record.

kraudive, Saturday, 16 March 2024 18:36 (one year ago)

wow.
what a year.
i have been on a massive Justice/bloghouse kick recently, so yeah, that.

mark e, Saturday, 16 March 2024 18:47 (one year ago)

justice, chromeo, mgmt, simian mobile disco, mia. i think this was the first year in my life i ever want dancing in a club

flopson, Saturday, 16 March 2024 19:08 (one year ago)

Any year Radiohead release an album feels iconic to me for some reason, and 2007 is no exception. Like 1997, it does feel like a bit of a new chapter in terms of pop culture, some doors closing, others opening.
Electro-house was on the wane, making way for dubstep as the big cultural dance movement to take hold of the mainstream.
In Rainbows felt like the album Radiohead had been threatening to make for a while, and while not as pivotal as OKC and Kid A, it's among their best.
I associate the MGMT album with 2008 for some reason, but that record was everywhere.
Much as it's not aged especially well, I was deep into Hissing Fauna at the time, so I might just vote for that

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Saturday, 16 March 2024 19:43 (one year ago)

I still don't get the fuss over Person Pitch. It just doesn't sound good to me.

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Saturday, 16 March 2024 19:44 (one year ago)

one of these

Burial - Untrue
Stars of the Lid - And Their Refinement of the Decline
Studio - West Coast/Yearbook 1

A Mountain of One's "Collected Works" from this year has a similar sound to Studio, for those who like Studio

adam t. (abanana), Saturday, 16 March 2024 20:19 (one year ago)

No Caribou no credibility.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 16 March 2024 20:24 (one year ago)

A Mountain of One's "Collected Works" from this year has a similar sound to Studio, for those who like Studio

both bands i bought their stuff purely cos of ILM.
no regrets.

mark e, Saturday, 16 March 2024 20:29 (one year ago)

Studio p much my album of the decade

nashwan, Saturday, 16 March 2024 21:12 (one year ago)

Sound of Silver meant so much to me that year. it was the year I turned 21 and was starting to go to clubs and party a lot and that music really captured something important for me, I mean it was dance music I really liked because it sort of holds your hand in a way. by which I mean if you're already into 80s stuff it slots right in, as opposed to more modern stuff which I thought was a lot more loud and amelodic. I always felt club music should feel welcoming. he actually played Chicago on my 21st birthday, it was a real special night. dunno if I could listen to it with an open mind now though

frogbs, Saturday, 16 March 2024 21:28 (one year ago)

west coast/yearbook 1 is way up there for me as well, a huge breath of fresh air when that came out.

brimstead, Saturday, 16 March 2024 22:00 (one year ago)

Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 March 2024 02:02 (one year ago)

?

Also good:

In Rainbows

Strawberry Jam
The Good The Bad And The Queen
Sound of Silver
Oracular Spectacular
Kala
Person Pitch
West Coast
Sky Blue Sky

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 March 2024 02:39 (one year ago)

on the 2006 thread my brain immediately assumed Studio had come out that year and had to look it up... so probably that

the-dream's debut is an undeniable statement.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Sunday, 17 March 2024 05:24 (one year ago)

This year looks super strong!

It’s between The-Dream (though in my head it is a 2008 album) and Studio for me, though there are heaps clustered close behind. Special shout out to Britney, Robert Wyatt, Panda Bear and The Tough Alliance.

Tim F, Sunday, 17 March 2024 05:32 (one year ago)

i could be whiney since it's not on the list, but parts & labor's "mapmaker" was massive for me as a college radio dj back then.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Sunday, 17 March 2024 05:40 (one year ago)

M.I.A.
Pantha du Prince
Times New Viking
WITTR
Tinariwen
The Field

Then a bunch of others.

Last I checked This Bliss is not on streaming, which has made me sad many times.

One of these:

The Dream - Love/Hate
Dizzee Rascal - Maths & English
Justice - Cross
MIA - Kala
Britney Spears - Blackout
Robert Wyatt - Comicopera

Comicopera was my #1 at the time

poppers fueled buttsex crescendo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 17 March 2024 13:06 (one year ago)

stars of the lid easily for mm. basically if an album were a therapy dog. i played it a million times then, a million more times since brian mcbride's death. i'm curious to see how many votes it gets.

This Bliss <3 what an incredible album.

Perfect Pitch - Pet Sounds for the 21st century

KorovaMilkbar, Sunday, 17 March 2024 16:13 (one year ago)

Perfect Pitch aka Person Pitch

KorovaMilkbar, Sunday, 17 March 2024 16:14 (one year ago)

I always thought all the "Panda is the new Brian Wilson" stuff to be a bit lazy and overblown but hearing that (plus his recent one with Sonic Boom) and I'm like...ok yeah he definitely is

much like MPP you'd think that album was gonna spawn a bunch of imitators but it now sounds like a time capsule. amazing cover art too.

speaking of could vote Strawberry Jam here, one of the few AnCo records that actually feels trim.

frogbs, Sunday, 17 March 2024 16:29 (one year ago)

Voted "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" because I'm afraid nobody else will, and it's one of those late-Bush-era, everything-is-fucked paranoid howls that briefly went out of fashion and then became more relevant than ever.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Sunday, 17 March 2024 16:48 (one year ago)

got a lot of mileage out of Confederation Trough (CD EP) and Rushup Edge by The Tuss, as well as Waitin' to Inhale by Devin the Dude.

suppose that i'd choose White Chalk, or Sky Blue Sky, from the list

Lowell N. Behold'n, Sunday, 17 March 2024 18:57 (one year ago)

I loved 2007. Maybe the best year of music in my life.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Sunday, 17 March 2024 20:38 (one year ago)

I voted for the Budos Band because I still listen to that record. The groove is so wonderful, they are wonderful. I liked the MIA album that year from this list, like a lot a LOT, Maths + English was good but I preferred Showtime, and I'm a Sound of Silver defender, but the Budos Band are transcendent to me

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 17 March 2024 22:15 (one year ago)

The thing is, Tomboy, the album after Person Pitch, is way more Brian Wilsony (and also tons better)

your mom goes to limgrave (dog latin), Sunday, 17 March 2024 22:31 (one year ago)

This Bliss, West Coast, and Untrue were all standout favourites, but nothing here gets close to And Their Refinement of the Decline. Contender for album of the 00s for me.

ed.b, Monday, 18 March 2024 00:42 (one year ago)

I voted Blackout. My thoughts on it have been slightly complicated by all that's come out about Britney in the last couple of years but I can't shake my view that its first half in particular is some of the best pop music ever made.

monotony, Monday, 18 March 2024 00:46 (one year ago)

For me it's The Tough Alliance. Incredible songs, and the videos for First Class Riot, New Chance, and Neo Violence are so great. The-Dream a close second.

wherewasyou, Monday, 18 March 2024 03:59 (one year ago)

one album I think is missing here is Dan Deacon's Spiderman of the Rings. I swear that album was a pretty big deal at the time. I don't think it's held up all that well and I know some people really hated it but it did seem like the sort of thing nobody had heard before

frogbs, Monday, 18 March 2024 04:08 (one year ago)

tough alliance is maybe #2 here for me

ufo, Monday, 18 March 2024 04:25 (one year ago)

Went with Untrue.

The Field, Stars of the Lid, and even Kanye would be a very close 2nd.

octobeard, Monday, 18 March 2024 05:13 (one year ago)

Untrue felt like a game changing, genre/scene defining release, more so than anything else on this list, and was hugely influential to me personally too.

octobeard, Monday, 18 March 2024 05:13 (one year ago)

I've never listened to Stars of the Lid, and I'm rectifying that as I type (tbh I always assumed they were an indie rock band). I want to hear that Guthrie/Budd album too.

I'm between Kala and Untrue...I've gone back to Kala more than anything else on this list aside from Radiohead, but only because Untrue has that special feeling that I don't want to wear out by listening to it too often.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 18 March 2024 14:15 (one year ago)

Heh, was literally about to say that I'd never listened to Stars of the Lid before as I'd wrongly assumed they were an indie rock band.

Untrue for me, just ahead of This Bliss and Aman Iman.

Wry & Slobby (Portsmouth Bubblejet), Monday, 18 March 2024 14:38 (one year ago)

co-sign everyone who said this was a great year, perhaps the best of the decade

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Monday, 18 March 2024 18:29 (one year ago)

I completely overlooked The Sound of Silver in the list. My favorite LCD full length. Doesn't change my voe, but yeah this is peak 00's. Co-sign best "mid-decade" year because nothing will beat 2000 or 2001.

octobeard, Monday, 18 March 2024 18:53 (one year ago)

It feels a bit funny to vote for MIA twice in these polls, but Kala is my favorite album listed here so... Write-in candidates would include Electrelane and Ulver.

o. nate, Monday, 18 March 2024 19:11 (one year ago)

SoS was one of the records that really encouraged me to try my hand at making dance music. Oh, it's allowed to have live drums that sound kinda shitty? Don't know how to program a synth? Just play some cowbells, it's fine.

(of course so did Burial, for totally different reasons)

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 18 March 2024 19:16 (one year ago)

He was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids iirc.

Studio p much my album of the decade

― nashwan, Saturday, March 16, 2024 5:12 PM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

yep, didn't even have to think about it. few other albums have had as big of an impact on my taste and in some ways the trajectory of my life. it was the major gateway to balearic music and cosmic disco for me, which has a lot to do with how i interact with music and why i stuck with DJing

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Monday, 18 March 2024 19:24 (one year ago)

Oh God, yes, this year was Electrelane's No Shouts No Calls for me. I adored it. Yeah, I remember this year now. Incidentally our last in Tufnell Park (how do you do that sad face thing)

kraudive, Monday, 18 March 2024 20:51 (one year ago)

Having a great time listening to Maths + English (which wasn't streaming for awhile, but now it is apparently). I love the feature trade with UGK (their feature here is much better than his feature on Underground Kingz though). This is the most fun Dizzee album by far. Such a great variety of tracks.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 18 March 2024 21:07 (one year ago)

This was a year I was really into indie, I guess: Panda Bear, Electrelane, Deerhunter, Caribou, James Blackshaw. I really like the The National album ("Boxer") from that year, too. Probably listened to the SOTL the most tho

Premises, Premises (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 18 March 2024 22:34 (one year ago)

I love that Dizzee album.
