id a rave track with folk music

I have an old skool rave mix tape from around 93, and at one point a track comes on with a speeded up woman's (probably) vocal singing about two bushes and two briars.

Any ideas?

according to the infallable Reynolds, that was Maddy Prior

(hmmm. this was a "Carmody to thread!" thread, wasn't it?)

ILLM!

Ha Robin,

now I've lured you in I can pick your brains ... whoa ha ha!

Certainly could be Maddy. Beautiful tone. But if it was Steeleye Span I think I'd recognise it.(Speaking of which, have you ever heard anyone sample the "700 Elves" bassline ... 'cos if not, it' sooo tempting.)

And the song is one of those originally orchestrated by Vaughn Williams isn't it?

At the moment, I'm trying to put together some kind of spooky / folky / shiny / dayglo old-skool rave tape..

It has to have this track ... (when I can find the damn thing), Opus 3, Earth Leakage Trip (for their seaside and icecream vibes)

Maybe some Pentangle (for those drum solos that are almost mid-90s drum'n'bass and that merry-go-round album cover)

What else do I need to make this picture complete?

Something from 'United Kingdoms' by Ultramarine. Maybe 'Happy Lands' (with Robert Wyatt on vocals).

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 5 December 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

the green man - shut up & dance.

All mixtapes should include "The Green Man".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 December 2002 15:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it's from a Maddy Prior solo album!

always thought the lyric was "through rushes and through briars" -- 'rushes' having nudge-nudge double entendre Pavlovian appeal for your hardcore E-heads

either way a stone classic of incongruous hardcore sampling

on topic of pure-voiced English maiden samples with E-innuendo, see also Kate Bush 'i just know that something good is going to happen' and the track unknown that samples Tasmin Archer's "Sleeping Satellite" . "did we fly to the moon too soon?": raver's tristesse never sounded so gorgeously wistful -- i think that song has the word 'rush' in it too

hmmm ... I wonder if anyone has ever sampled "Bells"? that was the Pentangle's best instrumental moment, I think.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 5 December 2002 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

robin: I tend to agree, although I don't know enough Pentangle. I played "Bells" on my radio show today. Someone could do a fantastic d'n'b remix. But I guess that's partly because it's drawing on the jazz drumming which also inspired d'n'b.

simon r: "pure-voiced English maiden samples" in colour drenched psychadelic rave / happy hardcore is exactly what I'm looking for here.

michael w : I pulled down the rum and black mix of The Green Man. Never heard it before but it's beautiful. Is this mix typical? I guess it get's the title from the piece of classical music sampled?
Fantastic.

‘The Green Man’, a name coined by Lady Raglan in 1939, is a mediaeval image usually found in churches. Carved in stone or wood, depicted on stained glass, illuminated manuscripts and where else, he can be recognised as a face, often grotesque, with foliage sprouting from his mouth, nose, eyes or ears. Alternatively, he may be a face composed entirely of leaves. Exterior or interior, he features on capitals, corbels, choir stalls, bench ends, fonts, screens, roof bosses - indeed, any surface open to ornamentation.

Glad you like it Phil.

Phil, would you like to hear about the Pentangle-sampling track I have in my head?

(note "hear *about*" - sadly it hasn't been recorded yet)
