Worst year by far imo. As for GAPDY, I ever liked Grizzly Bear and The Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix albums were disappointing especially compared to their previous efforts.

Fever Ray

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 00:27 (one year ago)

Man, I love that Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. And I guess the Phoenix album, it was uneven but it had amazing singles. I was never a fan of Grizzly Bear's music, but I have a good deal of respect for them.

This is probably the one Animal Collective that I really love, but I'm leaning towards the xx and maybe Sonic Youth. (I didn't even listen to that album until after they split. Really regret not keeping up with them to the end, I probably would've gone to a lot of shows had I done so.)

Wild Beasts offered a unique sound that year, love that album.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 03:26 (one year ago)

going with AnCo, boring choice I know but it's such a great pop album. the fact that it didn't spawn a bunch of lame imitators like you thought it would actually makes it hold up quite well.

the Dam-Funk album is great too, idk if I consider it an album really, it's more a compilation of 5 EPs. which are kinda hit and miss. the best 60 minutes or so of that though, wow

love the Junior Boys, kinda lukewarm on that album though

surprised Bromst by Dan Deacon isn't on the list, that felt like a pretty big album at the time. I get exhausted just thinking about putting it on again.

frogbs, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 03:54 (one year ago)

Ahhhhh the year I started to really get into music. Remember it like yesterday!

Bromst, with a proper sound system, is the best music you will ever listen to the first time you listen to it. Then you never want to hear it again (imo)

Post-Nothing: very fun simple guitar music which I still teach to students to expose them to the beautiful world of drop-d
MPP: Kinda perfect? No More Running can still get me a little teary
Real Estate: also kinda perfect? Toooooooooone, so much tone. cool lemonade in the backyard. a heartfelt 17yo diary entry which is obviously naive but also perfectly truthful. great teenager music this
Catacombs: The best album of the naughts hands down. "one way to go, yet so maaaaaany roads".
Embroyonic's opening track is the best thing the lips ever did. Sadly the rest of the album never even touches that peak
Girls - Album again perfect teenager music. Who doesn't wish they had a boyfriend, a pizza and a bottle of wine when they're a straight white 14yo boy living by the beach? Laura also the perfect "I have no idea how to treat this girl I like well" teenage anthem tbh.
Emeralds: pretty
Bitte Orca: blew my mind
The Antlers: antidote by indulgence to the melodrama typical of teendom

the rest I listened to after the fact. Anyways, voted cass obviously

Thanks for reading my journal

Oh and the visitor, that one was great but I always finished listening to it thinking "I should have just listened to 'Not Sport, Martial Arts/The Workplace' 1-2 punch instead".

H.P, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 04:08 (one year ago)

Voted Wild Beasts but The Field was close. Agree Tarot Sport is missing. Love the Grizzly Bear. I enjoyed 2009 a lot.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 05:02 (one year ago)

Not a lot here I love, voted for the Very Best (even though I like their prior mixtape more).

I was coming home from Vegas in a very fancy rental car that I had to open up. I hit 100 mph and of course got caught somewhere in Barstow, CA. Was listening to Bitte Orca and at that speed really blew my mind. Getting my vote because of that experience. Was the last time I have been pulled over, iirc.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 05:43 (one year ago)

Hell yeah. First time I listened to fun house was going 160kmph on a desolate country road and it was perfect (but also, don't speed kids)

fever ray or dj sprinks. will need to think on this further

it's finally happened, I have heard none of these albums. Well maybe Fever Ray but I've completely forgotten it if I have.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 08:56 (one year ago)

Fever Ray gets the nod on this list. Hadn't listened to it in years but this prompting confirms that it still resonates for me.

Have to vote for Cass (my honorable mentions would be Bill C, Dirty Ps, Fever Ray, Flaming Lips, JBs, Micachu)

Funding Hostile (Craig D.), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 14:38 (one year ago)

Big ones on my list that are missing:

Hudson Mohawke - Butter
Maxwell - BLACKsummer's Night
Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Mount Kimbie - Maybes EP
The Bad Plus - For All I Care

And wasn't 45:33 '09? But out of these, it's Dirty Projectors for sure.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 14:42 (one year ago)

You post “worst year by far imo” and then list a pile of masterpiece albums!

It’s a toss-up between DJ Sprinkles and Micachu for me, with Micachu having a hair of advantage bc I didn’t hear the Sprinkles until later. Could’ve also voted Bill or Cass very happily

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 15:01 (one year ago)

Definitely DJ Sprinkles for me, though I was pretty tempted by Flaming Lips. Embryonic is a really underrated album. IMO, their only truly great record.

OneSecondBefore, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 15:35 (one year ago)

Electrik Red in a heartbeat - one of the best albums ever made - followed by DJ Sprinkles and then probably Animal Collective, Fever Ray, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the XX and then Wild Beasts (at least if we're confined to the list).

Equal-second to me but surprisingly not on this list is The-Dream's second album, and somewhat close behind would be Paramore, Maxwell and maybe Rihanna.

I think of Fall Out Boy's Folie a Deux as a 2009 album but it turns out it came out in mid-December 2008.

Tim F, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 15:40 (one year ago)

Wild Beasts, as that’s my fave of theirs, while 2004’s Map of What Is Effortless is for TTA.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 16:18 (one year ago)

So this is the year of GAPDYX. I don’t really love anything here. Real Estate didn’t get good until their second album. I guess Girls were ok, but I never listen to it anymore. Write-in vote for Bat For Lashes.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 17:53 (one year ago)

The AC I burned myself out on though it’s still solid. The SY… this might be my least favorite SY studio LP of the final stretch

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 10 April 2024 17:55 (one year ago)

I think I liked a lot of these at the time but the only one I listen to with any frequency now is the xx. Midtown 120 Blues is probably the correct answer though.

Indexed, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 19:31 (one year ago)

Eletrik Red is good.
White Denim never put out an album that could match how incredible their live show was.
So anco it is.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 10 April 2024 19:35 (one year ago)

Relatively weak crop, much as I dig the SY, JBs, Fever Ray and The Field. Voting for Sprinkles though

2009 might not have been great for albums, but going back through some old mix comps recently led to rediscovering some absolute gold.

Surely this was one of the best things to come out of that late-2000s dubstep era
