although the lists seem really sf-centric... any thoughts and feelings out there on the comments about the year?

Mike McGuirk is one of the worst writers I have ever seen in print. Regularly gets his facts wrong (um, Kyuss were not from San Francisco...), liberally litters his writing with useless profanity and stupid sayings like "this kicks ass!", utterly predictable... ugh.

as cool as sarah han sounds, she posts craigslist personals ads with belle and sebastian lyrics.

:\

and i'm not just saying that because my glasses ALMOST got knocked off in the lightning bolt dvd footage from planet kimo's. or am i?

the crack:war CD <<<<<<<<< the crack:WaR set headlining the freedom from summertour show at 379 40th warehouse in williamsburg oakland.

Ewwwww!

You know, you left before I could give you a CD last night, you foolish fool!

Ugh, I can't read all that. Did Stereo Total really play at the Hemlock? And hysterical tirade against David Bowie. He's stiff! He's the Stooges in feathers! Mick Ronson makes dumb faces! Gosh, I guess he *does* suck.

Mike McGuirk = macho posturing. Seriously, the guy writes like he's proud that his knuckles drag on the ground.

Wha! I'm at work, and when I tried to go back to the Guardian article, I got hit with a "page blocked, referring to acceptable use policy" thing! I can't imagine what that article contains that hasn't been in a million ILX pages. What if they block me from ILX?!

Anyway, I doubt I'm missing anything.

So their Best Rap Stuff 2002 lists are all crammed with indie-hop stuff but there is a complete absence of Fantastic Damage? I find that a bit weird. Oh, and I guess Scarface IS the token mainstream rap star of the year.

McGuirk can not be the worst writer ever, simply because he uses the phrase "Greil Marcus, who surprisingly says a lot of cool stuff". Then again, he shits on Bowie so FUK HIM. Way to namedrop Under Construction in a vain attempt to not be the World's Biggest Rockist.

Will York: "I do not understand or like these new hip trends! They scare me!" Me: "Then write about something else you knob."

Jeff "DJ Zen" Chang is cool though. I loved his liner notes for Soulside's Greatest Bumps. And the contrast between his picks and his kids' picks are good for a larf.

People are still bashing the Strokes a year later, so I guess they (a) actually are important and (b) can't exactly be over-rated.

WOW those guys listen to a lot of rock. I didn't know people like that still existed, other than Ned of course.

I think by and large Americans are still not very interested in techno/IDM/electronica and its myriad offshoots. Rock and hip hop predominate, no question. European club culture is way way WAY foreign to most of America.

i particularly like the Crack:war cd. i actually heard it before i'd ever seen them live (strange since i'm friends with eric and jason from the band). but, after finally seeing them live, they are pretty intense and i could imagine a show outshining the cd

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, am I the only one who thinks that Crack:war sound like a third-rate Tigre and Bunny (w/distortion pedals)? I thought the show I saw was awful.

Ah well, takes all kinds...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 5 December 2002 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, am I the only one

i'm on the fence still after hearing just their half of a split 12"...

while liking them, i can see where your coming from... plus, the list of punk/noise kids doing beats and raps is starting to get big enough to kind of remove the novelty (da hawnay troof, gravy train, etc). i need to see more before i can really form an opinion.
