einstein violin improvs?

Soon he was playing Mozart duets, with his mother accompanying him on piano. "Mozart's music is so pure and beautiful that I see it as a reflection of the inner beauty of the universe itself," he later told a friend. "Of course," he added in a remark that reflected his view of math and physics as well as of Mozart, "like all great beauty, his music was pure simplicity."

Music was no mere diversion. On the contrary, it helped him think. "Whenever he felt that he had come to the end of the road or faced a difficult challenge in his work," said his son Hans Albert, "he would take refuge in music and that would solve all his difficulties." The violin thus proved useful during the years he lived alone in Berlin, wrestling with general relativity. "He would often play his violin in his kitchen late at night, improvising melodies while he pondered complicated problems," a friend recalled. "Then, suddenly, in the middle of playing, he would announce excitedly, 'I've got it!' As if by inspiration, the answer to the problem would have come to him in the midst of music."

Music continued to be a passion. There were nine violinists in his class, and their teacher noted that they suffered from "some stiffness in bowing technique here and there." But Einstein was singled out for praise: "One student, by the name of Einstein, even sparkled by rendering an adagio from a Beethoven sonata with deep understanding." At a concert in a local church, Einstein was chosen to play first violin in a piece by Bach. His "enchanting tone and incomparable rhythm" awed the second violinist, who asked, "Do you count the beats?" Einstein replied, "Heavens no, it's in my blood."

I have always been interested in what Douglas Adams’ music might’ve sounded like - known Pink Floyd fan who guested on guitar at one of their shows, some nice proggy soundtrack picks in his radio serial, writes actually very beautifully about music and mathematics in Dirk Gently. Was known to be obsessed with computer hardware and must’ve at least tinkered with home recording I would have thought. I think there is even a Sound on Sound profile on him. Wonder if there are any 3.5” floppy disks with some synthy doodles or old Tascam cassettes.

There are a number of bands from the Minneapolis scene of the early 80s that managed to record maybe one single, if that, where I would love to hear a collection of live or studio stuff.

there is probably some amazing Screamers stuff that none of us will ever hear

endless amounts of Beach Boys rehearsals, because as a singer myself, one of my favorite parts of performing in vocal groups was the rehearsals where we assembled the harmonies, and actually listening to the Beach Boys plunking out notes on a piano, and assembling theirs, while Brian inevitably fucks with the arrangement throughout.....is heaven.

granted, I know shit like this is already available in boxed sets, but like, I could listen to endless hours of them rehearsing harmonies a capella, wouldn't even want to hear the end product

I thought of the Screamers but at this point there's been quite a bit of live/demo stuff out on mostly bootlegs that I dunno how many other songs they had you can't hear in some form

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 2 May 2024 16:24 (two weeks ago) link

haha well I'll settle for master tapes of those three later 1978 studio songs that sound as good as that SV reissue of the '77 session.

I think the op was thinking more of stuff like "Bill Clinton's late night saxophone improvisations" tho

also want to hear every note that Dr Dre intended for Detox at some point to see if he actually had a plan at any point or if "Detox" was just him going into the studio for ten minutes, screaming "GODDAMMIT" and leaving.

feel like there has to be a lot of leftover bits from 1999-2000 when the thing was actually given a (brief) release date

maybe different convo for a different thread but i thought most of the finished detox stuff ended up on the compton ost thingy?

as for me, there's some rumored unarranged charts and possibly basic rhythm tracks david axelrod recorded for a third mca album in the early 80s, but it never came to fruition obviously. there was also a one-off live performance of the electric prunes stuff in 68 or 69, which axe conducted, but nobody recorded it.

I don't think so, he said he had like 50 tracks for Detox and scrapped most of it, though presumably some of the ideas got recycled. I just wanna hear the whole mess of stuff he had, in general.

in fact, listening to cancelled album planning sessions would be an interesting thing to me. there's so many legendary ones.

frogbs, Thursday, 2 May 2024 17:28 (two weeks ago) link

for me I guess the answer would be Tim Smith/Cardiacs, both the album that was lost in a computer crash circa 2003 or so and the one he was working on before the stroke

frogbs, Thursday, 2 May 2024 17:29 (two weeks ago) link

There's still rumours we're going to hear that second Cardiacs one (LSD) - could end up hearing bits of it live this weekend at the tribute shows in fact. Bit optimistic that but a man can dream eh

after einstein's proto-relativity fiddle odysseys i would die to hear the beatles gorked out on speed deep in their early '60s hamburg sets

One evening when Einstein was at home with his landlady, he heard someone playing a Mozart piano sonata. When he asked who it was, his landlady told him that it was an old woman who lived in the attic next door and taught piano. Grabbing his violin, he dashed out without putting on a collar or a tie. "You can't go like that, Herr Einstein," the landlady cried. But he ignored her and rushed into the neighboring house. The piano teacher looked up, shocked. "Go on playing," Einstein pleaded. A few moments later, the air was filled with the sounds of a violin accompanying the Mozart sonata. Later, the teacher asked who the intruding accompanist was. "Merely a harmless student," her neighbor reassured her.

Music continued to beguile Einstein. It was not so much an escape as it was a connection: to the harmony underlying the universe, to the creative genius of the great composers, and to the people who felt comfortable bonding with more than just words. He was awed, both in music and in physics, by the beauty of harmonics.

“As his long nails raked the strings of his Martin guitar, he began huffing softly into the harmonica racked around his neck, and soon a familiar melody filled the air. Could it be? I moved closer to cock an ear as Dylan cranked up the chorus. Yes, no doubt about it — Bob Dylan was running down the first-ever folkie arrangement of “Karma Chameleon,” the Culture Club hit.”

the birth of jazz and the blues. Also some of the more maverick sounds that didn't get recorded because those doing recording had a narrative they wanted to fit things to.

Andy Summers stint in the Soft Machine, playing raga guitar over the line-up still including Kevin Ayers

A good quality full Stooges gig with Dave Alexander fully integrated. Also the initial line up doing avant noise impro with Jim-a-phone and metal barrel/cannister percussion.
