The Lemon Twigs - thoughts

Their new album is out today. Giving it a listen at the moment as I've found them immensely exciting this year. An odd thing to say considering their entire shtick is rewriting the classic 60s pop songbook but I think they went 4 for 4 on the singles front off this new album.

I can see them being a band that irritates some people - and to be honest before their last album I looked at them and was put off by their visual identity - but I'm becoming a genuinely big fan. Anyone have a take to share?

It's superior neo-powerpop which must be very difficult to get one's head round these days

Also reckon their acting backgrounds gets the usual lot going "aahh it's so stage school"

serious question: why would it be difficult to get one's head around superior neo-powerpop?

I like them, though it would be nice to add at least SOMETHING original to the formula

It does appear that their second album, the musical, scared a few people away

More songs thhat differ from the usual sound like Church Bells and Rock On would be nice

one of my best pals who is a pretty adventurous collector of records is completely obsessed with them and they are all he talks about now

i have never seen him like this

i feel their abilities and limitations are both obvious, their depths are maybe less so, and i have enjoyed them in small doses in the company of my friend but not enough to seek out more on my own

i'm exaggerating a little/affectionately mocking of course

Oh yeah, and the older brother is more talented but the younger one is cuter

I think they're derivative as hell but that's not always a bad thing and it seems to have done well for them. They're fantastic pop songwriters in a Wilson/Rundgren/McCartneyesque mould and the skills aren't really transferrable to many other sounds of music.

Although then again Todd Rundgren did release that rap album in the 90s...

i like that the band name is a 'make a band name more reasonable' of the lemon trees

speaking of Todd these guys did a track with him on his last album and I think it's the best thing on it, they do classic Todd better than he does these days

the twigs are a group where i would absolutely buy a ticket to see them but don't really listen to their stuff often. they're kind of like vulfpeck in that they are ultra-competent pastiche artists with a juvenile sense of humor. they're unlike vulfpeck in that they can actually write the hell out of a song sometimes

these guys always struck me as real ding dongs but gonna listen to this new one

these little rascals are winning me over

i don't know todd rundgren that well but sometimes i hear little things that feel very badfinger to me

they crib from all the power pop groups of that era. their last album reminded me a good deal of the raspberries' overnight sensation

The latest album is terrific. I've listened to some of their earlier stuff and it's like a bunch of dudes finding a trunk of old costumes and theyre trying different wigs on but they've found their groove now. Yeah it's retro but the songs are great

incredible live band too

maybe best live band around
