The most passive aggressive song in the history of popular music.

I think you guys may have trouble beating Elvis' "That's All Right".

Well, that's all right now mama
That's all right with you
That's all right now mama, just any way you do
That's all right, that's all right
That's all right now mama, any way you do

My mama, she done told me, papa done told me too
"Son, that gal you're foolin' with
She ain't no good for you"
But that's all right now, that's all right
That's all right now mama, any way you do

I'm leaving town, baby
I'm leaving town for sure
Well, then you won't be bothered with me hanging 'round your door
Well, that's all right, that's all right
That's all right now mama, any way you do

I can't recall a lyric, but I remember listened to that Renee Rapp album that came out a bit ago, and a few of the tracks were among the pettiest things I'd ever heard. But of course Elvis is bigger than Rapp'll ever be so I suppose name alone might make you right.

there's gotta be a Lennon song that competes here, but yeah Elvis is tough to beat

Fame - or lack of it - should not be a barrier!

arthur crudup must've been a passive aggressive mofo

as much as i hate to bring him up at this juncture ―and maybe it's actually even more appropriate, considering the timing― but drake surely has some humdingers in this field.

Del Shannon's "Hats Off to Larry" goes pretty hard

Once I had a pretty girl
Her name it doesn't matter
She went away with another guy
Now he won't even look at her
Hats off to Larry, he broke your heart
Just like you broke mine
When you said we must part
He told you lies
Now it's your turn to cry, cry, cry
Now that Larry said goodbye to you
I know this may sound strange
I want you back, I think you'll change
But there's one more thing I gotta say
Hats off to Larry, it may sound cruel
But you laughed at me
When you said we were through
You told me lies
Now it's your turn to cry, cry, cry
Now that Larry said goodbye to you
Hats off to Larry, it may sound cruel
But you laughed at me
When you said we were through
You told me lies
Now it's your turn to cry, cry, cry
Now that Larry said goodbye to you
To you, to you

nominating 'No Distance Left To Run' by Blur, maybe that feels particularly pass-agg because it's about a specific person with a public profile rather than an anonymous 'girl'

also nominating the entire career of taylor swift

What about Jackson by Johnny Cash?

sarahell, Friday, 10 May 2024 17:36 (one year ago)

I don't know if this was Marshall Crenshaw's intention, but There She Goes Again sounds very 'I'm not mad, really', the wistfulness doesn't entirely convince

Certainly a few Alex Chilton Big Star songs fit into this category - You get what you deserve, life is white, you can't have me, my rival...

Belle & Sebastian's "I'm Waking Up To Us" - in particular when they had the subject of the song (Isobel Campbell) stand on the stage and perform it shortly before she (understandably) quit the band. Just the most mortifying thing Stuart has ever done.

that's alright mama vs. don't think twice it's alright

I ain't saying you treated me unkind
You could've done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right

This got to him so much that when they did the deluxe version of The Life Pursuit with the liner notes featuring a "Best of" AMAs from their website, they included a fan's strongly-worded dressing down of Stuart for that, and his equally strongly-worded denial.

this was hilarious btw. they basically came on a thread like this, hit "PRINT ALL" and yeah: there's yr album booklet!
