Last song of the night?

What's the "best" last song of the night?

I'm sort of thinking ... you've had a bit too much red wine, you're about to stumble into bed, one more song ... but other people's evenings may end differently.

My favourite bar from the bit of my life I feel most nostalgic about used to play the same song at chucking out time (between 4am and 7am usually) every night -

I quite like a maudlin end to the night and have a habit of playing this on a loop as I drift off... (King Creosote, And the Racket They Made).

This would be one of my choices:

(Tindersticks - Raindrops)

I have a vague idea that something by Sinatra might also fit the bill but don't really have a good argument for that.

Velvet Underground, "Afterhours" is my choice

Hongro Hongro Hippies (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 19 June 2024 19:56 (one year ago)

Slightly off-topic but... the indie nightclub I used to attend regularly back in the day always played "Dancing Queen" at the end of the night and to this day hearing it inspires PTSD at the memories of scrambling to get out of the place before the horror of the lights being turned on.

Here's a playlist of most of what has been mentioned so far:

(It's likely to be edited over time in a kind of "No, that's not what I'd play" sort of way).

For most of this year, the last song of the night when I’m playing out on Fridays has been UB40: Kingston Town. Some regulars requested it, and it just stuck, because it works. I barely remember it from when it was a hit.

To be fair, I can't really claim credit here - I first heard a DJ close with this at 6am at a docklands party somewhere in Denmark 25 years ago, and it was perfect: first of all, literally everyone knows and loves this song, but it's also laidback but still danceable, and the lyrics reference the sun coming up and the morning dew and "we gotta go" etc. So I've shamelessly stolen it for whenever I play a last set myself (which tbh isn't very often anymore).

Siegbran, Thursday, 20 June 2024 09:42 (one year ago)

This song mentions 'the small hours', but that's just a coincidence. For me, it has the right blend of melancholy and uplift for this brief.

Plus people are pairing off in 2s to go home with each other

So enjoying the playlist (after a bottle of red) - thanks for the suggestions.

djh, Wednesday, 26 June 2024 22:43 (one year ago)

I had to choose a track to get people off the floor and to other places and weirdly picked “You Gotta Be” (Des’ree) and I have never seen a dance floor fill up so quickly

I was definitely thinking more "You've got home. You have carried on drinking. You should stop but, oh, one more small glass of red and the perfect tune" rather than encourage people to go ... but obviously there's some crossover.
