it is! i've only recently started listening to them, but When Horses Would Run would have been my aoty for 2023 for sure. riyl electrelane, vaselines, broadcast, lo-fi, deerhoof, magnetic fields. they do both late 60s pop-harmony a la free design and sneering punk, twee, orange juice, everything in between, i just love them

(^i am awful at describing music, please don't take any of those riyls as reductive, they're there to give a rough marker of the territory^)

it's funny that other sonic references for the album last year are smb3 interstitial jazz and hank williams, and surf

yes i really loved their album from last year. the surf rock influence and irreverent humor reminded me a lot of the unicorns

they manage to make it all fit together! anyway i'll stop gushing but they hit all the spots for me this summer

not sure why i didn’t get around to listening to this until now, considering how much i loved the first one, but this one is just as good. consistently fun and interesting, and genuinely pretty at times. and always surprising! the moment of one of those genuinely pretty songs, “big bovine,” where they start singing a clanging melody that resembles “palm tree girls” from i think you should leave nearly took me out

Hey this absolutely rules. Psychedelic Pixies with Beatles, Yo La Tengo, and X influences. Sometimes I hear a bit of Alvvays. Regardless the melodies are sticky, the songs are both tight and inventive, and the whole thing is great fun.

Thanks z for starting this thread. I bought their two most recent albums and I am loving them. I find they sound like an actual mid-60s band way more than a lot of 60s-loving indie bands do, though obviously they are filtered through a lot of intervening music. I think it's the way the male and female vocalists work together that elevate it.
