Nowadays they just bleep bleep and bloop bloop. We use to be a proper country.

Singing together is something that takes a lot of time and practice and was common in ages past because it was something entertaining that required no money or equipment. which is why it became so commonplace in public gathering places (churches, streetcorners, barbershops, bars etc.) That social context is all gone now, and kids don't need to rely exclusively on their bodies and their families/friends' bodies to entertain themselves.

the harmonies are there but, like the imaginary pie in Hook, are imperceptible to boomers

Is this the Geir Hongro Rick Beato thread?

I'm sure there'll be a lot of dorm-hallway acoustic-guitar harmonizing of "Red Wine Supernova" this fall.

going to vocal camp at FSU as a 16-17 was dope cos during the hours we didn't have rehearsal, instead of practicing, usually some dork would start singing something and then we'd all impromptu vocal jam. well, not me because I wasn't any good yet.

time was you could do chords with major 7ths. now the kids today, they find it too dissonant, everything is thirds

The other day I heard Harry Nilsson's Jump Into the Fire on a public radio station, sandwiched in between two contemporary indie/Americana bands. One was The War on Drugs; didn't catch the other one's name, but they were similar. It got me thinking that "male singers don't wail anymore" could be a modern trend. Do y'all think that's accurate, or just based on a sampling error on my part? Is there anyone out there in rock music today who bucks that trend?
If it's real, I thought about potential reasons for it:
*Not wanting to blow out their vocal cords. Practitioners of better technique. *Embarrassment/shyness at the idea of conveying too much emotion. *Numb to all feelings in this modern hellscape, so why emote?

All the wailers sing pop or r&b now

...and the Original Wailers stuck to Reggae.
