If Perry was willing to cop the built-in bad press of making a song about women’s lib with an alleged abuser, shouldn’t the song at least be a banger? Instead, it’s unfathomably tepid, irritating at best. In the immortal words of Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, uttered moments before she died: “Katy Perry, please stop.”

katy perry sucks but as far as dr luke proteges go, kim petras should be called out more often, but apparently she doesn't care and it's not like she's out there making women's lib anthems lol. maybe dr luke doesn't sexually assault trans people.
anyway that dazed blurb is a little cringe, perry's career is down the drain enough that i doubt she's getting much traction with white gays living in west hollywood at the moment but maybe i'm underestimating how much being rich makes you lame.
a free kesha is obviously the real deal when it comes to women's lib realness.

the pitchfork review of Woman's World (mookie already quoted it above but in the interest of completion):
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/katy-perry-womans-world/
Even if “Woman’s World” didn’t sound like its author had to have feminism explained to her by the top half of the first page of Google, its message of empowerment would have rang false, simply because it was co-written and co-produced by Dr. Luke, the producer Kesha accused, in a since-dismissed lawsuit, of sexual assault and emotional abuse—allegations he denied. It’s sincerely twisted, if unsurprising—I generally believe you have to be at least be something of an amoral hypocrite to be a celebrity or pop star, and fair play to those willing to do it—but it also reveals “Woman’s World” to be even more of a monumental catastrophe: If Perry was willing to cop the built-in bad press of making a song about women’s lib with an alleged abuser, shouldn’t the song at least be a banger? Instead, it’s unfathomably tepid, irritating at best. In the immortal words of Sister Catherine Rose Holzman, uttered moments before she died: “Katy Perry, please stop.”

I have always found Katy's cluelessness strangely endearing, and as this is probably her most clueless move so far, I can't help but feel a little torn here. she tries so hard to have something to say and misses it so completely, it is very bad but there's also no malice in her, though obviously can't say the same about Dr luke.

haven't heard the song yet but glad my prediction that it would likely be suitable for the rolling worst music '24 thread came to pass (based on the tiktok teaser -- ppl were mocking it for sounding chatgpt-penned pretty much on arrival)
i'm sure i will be hearing it soon regardless bc i do leave the radio on in the car still and i am 100% sure that radio (in america, at least) will fight hard to try to make this a hit even if the streaming remains in the shitter bc programmers and consultants are, similar to the weho white gays, still stuck in 2011 and consider dr. luke their unfairly maligned savior

― The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 13 July 2024 00:31 (one year ago)
I don't even understand why she did this, she already got tons of blowback for doing a clumsy "empowerment" album in 2017 and now she's doing like vintage Meghan Trainor/Lizzo versions of it.
I don't know how she "wins" in 2024 though.
― The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 13 July 2024 00:38 (one year ago)
according to wikipedia it has received "mixed-to-negative reviews". rarely have i ever seen a pop song be panned this hard so i guess it must be virtually impossible for a song to have actually received overwhelmingly negative reviews according to that site. not that this is surprising since pop music wiki articles are written largely by fans, no matter how much this is denied

the cut
https://www.thecut.com/article/womans-world-review-katy-perry-is-stuck-in-2016.html
'Well, Katy’s back, and everything about the rollout for her new album, 143, reeks of desperation. Bidding for lowest-common-denominator gay fandom, she’s busied herself resharing tweets calling her “mother”'
'What the streams reveal: vacant lyrics, ill-advised guests, very obvious samples — an album that will almost certainly flop'.
'“She’s a sister/She’s a mother,” Perry sings, as if those are the only two identities she can think of. At the end, Perry hangs off a helicopter, brandishing a ring light stolen from a TikToker that’s miraculously transformed into the female gender symbol. What?'

this song is terrible and Katy Perry was an indefensible figure even before it but there's something very obvious and redundant about the way publications are tripping over themselves to print savage reviews of this. Anyone with a passing interest in pop culture knows that making a self-declared feminist anthem with Dr Luke is a disaster and nobody is having their experience of this song changed by some punchlines about the dead nun, it's too easy a target for me to be impressed by a takedown review
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 13 July 2024 07:06 (one year ago)
as expected, industry hacks are just going to look the other way and pretend this song is a smash in the making
Tom March’s Team Capitol has all hands on deck to roll out new music from superstar Katy Perry, whose single “Woman’s World” dropped this week ahead of new album 143 (due 9/20).The set finds Perry reuniting with longtime collaborator Dr. Luke, with whom she made her biggest records, as well as hitmaker extraordinaire Max Martin.“Woman’s World,” which spawned a wild, irreverent, proudly feminist video (see below), is off to a strong start: The vid is the #1 trending clip on YouTube, and the song is expected to notch north of 3m global Spotify streams on day one. “World” also quickly made the Top 5 at iTunes.Expect Greg Marella and his promo squad to ensure a huge look at radio, which is already said to be champing at the bit for this track. What other tricks does the Katy crew have up its collective sleeve? What surprises await on the album, which Perry has said was titled for her “angel number?” Speaking of numbers, everyone involved here has told us to lose theirs.

reality: this "proudly feminist" video is probably the only youtube upload for a song this side of nicki minaj's "big foot" whose comments are full of criticism and outright mockery, its spotify streams debuted with well under that projected amount and will probably decline from there. oh but at least it was briefly top 5 on itunes and the programmers who're still spinning miley's "flowers" and weeknd's "die for you" are lining up to add it!!

I just watched the video and it’s not anything special in the world of Katy Perry videos. The song itself is a nonentity begging for a hi-energy remix that ditches the verses. I think the only reason anyone is even paying attention to this is because Dr. Like sucks.

as much as I appreciate a good Katy Perry pile on this song isn't even that bad. its like the song you'd hear at the end of a movie that airs on the Disney channel at 1 PM about a girl who didn't make the high school softball team. she doesn't have Meghan Trainor's natural talent for taking such things to the next level. the video on the other hand makes me feel like I'm at the strip club after getting castrated and then lobotomized on the same day

What's funny is at one point I kind of thought KP was likable, maybe due to my perception that she didn't take herself very seriously, but over time you kind of want people like that to actually be funny and not just seeming a bit irreverent. I think this song is kind of interesting because of the backstory as roxy noted in addition to it being thoroughly terrible. I think actually it's not necessarily a markedly worse than a lot of her songs, she's generally pretty bad (though I frequently find her only as bad as a lot of other bad pop music, she seems typically representative of a lot of aspects of modern pop that I really dislike), but a lot of the surrounding stuff takes it to another level.

the death cult brutality, 'might is right and words don't matter' side to american culture is very much katy perry's bread and butter. coherent point of view is definitely not a feature of her music, she is all about 'thinkiness' or making gestures towards thought, like that a thought or an ethical statement might exist, it might cross your awareness at some point during time spent between weho and goddess has not granted me the access to know where else, maybe puerto vallarta or uhh greece? but ultimately what matters is amplifying and glossifying all of the status quo hierarchical power that the u.s. embodies to the max so gay people can feel like they belong to the rotten country club too.

the idea the video for this mess is satirical reminds me of something I read in erstwhile ilxor max's newsletterthe special Zoomer definition of “satire,” which means something like “I said something I didn’t really believe to provoke some kind of reaction on social media.”
the other take that hit for me was that her initial success was very much in a radio-centric world where she could slide between artists with actual social stances and do this stance-free fence-sitting gibberish but now that's less of a venue and instead of picking a lane, she's doubling down on a complete lack of coherence

so much of her stuff is just so... defend the indefensible
i just... i don't understand making that part of one's, like, _identity_. being like "oh no it wasn't just about the songs and the cupcake frosting pasties, i feel a _deeper kinship_ with this artist and i experience no shame or complicated emotions at all about that".

I saw one of the stans with a perrygaga99909 username defending the Dr. Luke angle but... didn't Gaga support Kesha? How do the stans reconcile these matters?

i finally listened to this song via the video and i think it's fine. i've softened on her exaggerated red state appeal. she always just did that libidinal guns-and-trucks america fantasia pretty well, if the gays want some of that i'll throw it in with the gaga and the beyonce (i got a request for this from a queen last saturday). dr. luke sucks and i wish someone else could step into his moroder updated via electrohouse / edm sound, it's just a great gay party sound, poppers in audio form. this particular song is a little .. subdued tbh? maybe even subtle for her lol. it sounds classy compared to kim petras of the last 3 years tho.
