wonder if there were people who were grateful dead about can and followed them everywhere? there should have been those people.

i am a big can fan. but i am not a superfan when it comes to every bootleg. so a lot of it is just new to me! i remember splurging on a can bootleg live cd in the 90s. i had never seen one! can't even remember what show it was.
i did pre-order that official live 2cd thing a couple of years back. the first and only time i ever pre-ordered something on the internet.

The EU as currently constituted didn't exist till 1993, it was strictly an economic union in those days.

I know for a fact there were Europe-wide rail passes in the 80s, it was the Common Market after all. Didn't have to show my passport going from Germany to Austria in 1987.

Good job the Austrian authorities didn't find out about it, they didn't join the EU till 1995!

i'm not actually. looking for a conversation about the live Can releases. just thought people could post their fave live stuff if they felt like it. but nobody has to! i've just been enjoying random boots online.

i see there have been 4 new sets since that first 2xcd i bought. i should get them. they are so cheap!

note that the Cuxhaven release chopped off like 50 minutes of the concert, someone uploaded it on the other thread and it is better than the released part! totally baffling.

It's colour-separation-overlay (CSO or blue-screen) of the shots from the live performance with treated shots from other cameras used as the background. e.g. you can see Schimdt's head in profile in pink on red in the background. They would have performed in front of blue walls and the shots overlaid in real time, a bit like 70s Doctor Who.
But yeah they look awesome. I watched the two clips of Halleluwah and Paperhouse on my big TV last night and realised that altho Schmidt's keyboard seems to be inaudible a lot of the time, he's doing percussive chording low in the mix which locks with the drums to make the core groove, I never realised that before. Also Karoli and Czukay are playing like inspired madmen. Previously I'd focused on Liebezeit and Suzuki because they're so spectacular, but it's wonderful to be able to see how they all work together.

Irmin's organ solo on this is nuts.

I was wondering what Irmin was doing around the 3:20 mark! You can kind of hear these smashed low chords that I don't think are coming from the bass. Surely his gear is not unplugged because you can hear him later. Can't get over how incredible this is...tomorrow is the monthly prog night at a local bar here that I help run sometimes, we have a projector and big screen and this is absolutely going on

He's hammering the top end of the keyboard so those can't be low chords he's playing.

Not sure how he's producing those bent notes you hear around the 4 minute mark though.

Yeah there's something odd - I wondered if there was a foot-operated pitchwheel!
I even wondered if the mix guys for the TV were being a little highhanded about when to bring him up or drop him back in the mix.

Don't know about the Farfisa Professional he's playing in this clip but there are ways of bending Hammond-type tonewheel organs involving the motor switches, Keith Emerson and Hugh Banton used to do this a lot. Could probably do it on a transistor organ with some sort of voltage starve/drop sort of modification.

figured i'd update here and say people fucking LOVED it. heard lots of people saying things like "who is this singer? what is going on with this guy??" one person was like "I was going to leave but I'm glad I stayed for this"...almost none of them had a clue who Can were. "Like...C-A-N???". happy to have won over a few converts :)
