This is it!

I have done this series from the 1960s through 2010s, which is 60 years worth of polls for both songs and albums. The 1950s could be interesting, as it is a black hole for me, but I think it has run it course. If I'm around in another 10 years maybe I will do this decade.

Thanks everyone who participated over the years, it has been a fun rollercoaster ride. End of an era, let's go out with a bang.

Bee OK, Friday, 19 July 2024 17:29 (ten months ago)

went for octa octa

nxd, Friday, 19 July 2024 17:30 (ten months ago)

Thanks for these bee OK x

miserably terrible year according to the top ten

ivy., Friday, 19 July 2024 17:45 (ten months ago)

it's between jamila woods and these new puritans. voting... these new puritans

ivy., Friday, 19 July 2024 17:46 (ten months ago)

my top two aren't on here (yves jarvis, raphael saddiq), so let's go with #3 (jamila woods)

the defenestration of prog (voodoo chili), Friday, 19 July 2024 17:47 (ten months ago)

It's Purple Mountains buyt I'm gonna give Fontaines the pick cos no one else is. The best band of the nu-post-punk school.

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 19 July 2024 18:07 (ten months ago)

These new puritans my number 2 out this list, do think Reeds was a better record but Rose is an incredible album

nxd, Friday, 19 July 2024 18:10 (ten months ago)

Wanted to vote Purple Mountains because I'm clinically depressed but uh Resonant Body had a _very significant_ impact on my life. Gotta be that.

Kate (rushomancy), Friday, 19 July 2024 20:50 (ten months ago)

Maybe PROTO because I saw Holly do it live - even though there was constant chatting throughout, causing large parts of the audience to sssshhhh the other parts

Cool seeing Underworld here

I was starting to despair until I came to #48. Though they've floundered since, "Young Enough" still represents Charly Bliss at the top of their game.

o. nate, Friday, 19 July 2024 21:05 (ten months ago)

designer

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 19 July 2024 21:09 (ten months ago)

I have been obsessed with Lana Del Rey lately and played Norman Fucking Rockwell! for the first time ever like a month ago. So tempting.

Bee OK, Friday, 19 July 2024 22:06 (ten months ago)

Jenny Hval so acclaimed she placed twice - it's a good album!

that's that me: a Viking (seandalai), Friday, 19 July 2024 22:42 (ten months ago)

agreed that these polls have been great fun, bee! end of an era, indeed.

afaic ivy is kinda right: this year was underwhelming, with 2 total underdog winners: jerkcurb + possibly the last ever appleseed cast album. all but one of my top picks aren't even repped here, so i'm not sure what to vote for. my ranked list from the time looks like:

jerkcurb - air con eden
abdullah ibrahim - the balance
thom yorke - anima [have cooled on this significantly since]
james blake - assume form
appleseed cast - fleeting light of impermanence [would be #2 in hindsight]
william tyler - goes west/dispatches from echo magic
shana cleveland - night of the worm moon
blues lawyer - something different
burial - claustro/state forest [TECHNICALLY not an album, but whatever]
rustin man - drift code
the ocean blue - kings and queens/knaves and thieves

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Friday, 19 July 2024 22:54 (ten months ago)

u.f.o.f. towers over most of this

ufo, Friday, 19 July 2024 22:57 (ten months ago)

terrible year, I think this is when I began to tune out a lot of more popular stuff and just go down rabbithole niches via Bandcamp

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Friday, 19 July 2024 23:11 (ten months ago)

voted Sunn O))) just for support but I don't care about any of these

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Friday, 19 July 2024 23:12 (ten months ago)

going with No Home Record, which i think is a LOT better than The Collective. also really like Thank U, Next and Songs For You.

some dude, Friday, 19 July 2024 23:49 (ten months ago)

Jenny Hval so acclaimed she placed twice - it's a good album!

― that's that me: a Viking (seandalai),

I'm an idiot. I think that is the only mistake I made over the seven years of doing this poll? As stated before Acclaimed data base doesn't quite have 50 choices so I play with the bubbling under part and checked a few other places. I wanted to make sure that album made it but work distracted me and went too fast.

Bee OK, Saturday, 20 July 2024 01:28 (ten months ago)

Hey Michael, I'm also voting for Fontaines DC! Surprised how much I liked that record as I don't feel like I need more of that sort of thing, but it's different enough that it grabs me.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 20 July 2024 01:50 (ten months ago)

my top ten also completely missing, was a pretty great year imo:

Girlpool, What Chaos is Imaginary
Nilüfer Yanya, Miss Universe
Hama, Houmeissa
Tink, Voicemails
DIIV, Deceiver
Chai, Punk
Raphael Saadiq, Jimmy Lee
Spellling, Mazy Fly
Men I Trust, Oncle Jazz
Polo G, Die A Legend

makes Drift Series 1 an easy choice, I've actually listened to & watched the whole thing now

moral ziosk (geoffreyess), Saturday, 20 July 2024 03:15 (ten months ago)

i adore that cate le bon album and it is an 'important' album for me

z_tbd, Saturday, 20 July 2024 18:53 (ten months ago)

Voted for Dedicated (still my favourite CRJ album) but yeah it does look like kind of a lean year based on this list. I do like the These New Puritans album a lot though.

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 20 July 2024 19:06 (ten months ago)

Fwiw my #1 would be American Football LP3

Gavin, Leeds, Saturday, 20 July 2024 19:08 (ten months ago)

oh wait this was the year of american football lp3???? the best album ever made?????

ivy., Saturday, 20 July 2024 19:48 (ten months ago)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Ghosteen - I find this record remarkable every time i listen to it.
For 2019, my runner up is Jessica Pratt's "Quiet Signs". When the weather starts to cool in the early fall, this record rarely leaves my turntable.

KorovaMilkbar, Saturday, 20 July 2024 20:17 (ten months ago)

Weyes Blood.

c u (crüt), Saturday, 20 July 2024 21:48 (ten months ago)

'songs for you' by tinashe by far. such an underrated masterpiece.

Nourry, Wednesday, 24 July 2024 11:28 (ten months ago)

My album of 2019 was Christian Scott which isn't here but I'd vote for in a heartbeat.

My number (2) was Slowthai, but I haven't listened to it since the pandemic - a good reminder to reivst. Otherwise, of these it's These New Puritans for sure, a massive album for me.

I only discovered American Football (in general) after 2019 but yes that album is awesome.

Tim F, Thursday, 25 July 2024 07:06 (ten months ago)

Heard Dedicated for the first time because of this exercise. My only black hole in my CRJ listening experience. She doesn't have a bad album all of them are, at least, great.

Bee OK, Saturday, 27 July 2024 03:17 (ten months ago)

Jamila Woods or Underworld for me.

Other good things from 2019:

CFCF - Liquid Colours
Santilli - Surface
Suso Saiz - Nothing is Objective
Jimmy "Duck" Holmes - Cypress Grove
Harry Styles - Fine Line
The Highwomen - S/T

And, if they count, two monster compilations:
Burial - Tunes 2011-2019
V/A - 環境音楽 (Kankyō ongaku): Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980–1990

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Saturday, 27 July 2024 09:37 (ten months ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 30 July 2024 00:01 (nine months ago)

Looks like I'm the only one who is going on record to vote for Billie Eilish, Angel Olsen would be my second choice.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 30 July 2024 16:10 (nine months ago)

I'd probably vote Shura if she were here

nashwan, Tuesday, 30 July 2024 16:26 (nine months ago)

Absolutely no question: These New Puritans

laughter is the best weapon (DJP), Tuesday, 30 July 2024 17:41 (nine months ago)

Thanks to everyone for this eight year project! It ended well but do have some work left.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 31 July 2024 01:07 (nine months ago)

Webb Snell Ray Harrison Birdsong

That is scary.

But the bullpen is overused and will break.

Sigh
