tough call between mondays and kitchens!

Everyone knows what a dance floor filler "The Other Side of Summer" is.

Why are you making me choose between Electronic, Fishbone, Siouxsie, and 808 State?

The 120 Minutes playlist archive is fun - https://120minutes.org/1991/#010691

It got even worse than I remembered by 2000

Dearly love 'In Yer Face' but weird that it's here among all those janglers

For some reason the straightforward performance video for Perfect Kiss really gets me. One of my fav videos of all time. Something about seeing such sleek sounds made by craggy, somber humans.

Jonathan Demme directed that video

“Interview with New Fast Automatic Daffodils, presented as the next big thing”

The names seems vaguely familiar, but only vaguely.

I have a constantly changing Spotify playlist titled 'tolerable Red Hot Chili Peppers.' The question of what makes a good Chi-Peps song is not always resolved for me: As good as it is, is American Ghost Dance cultural appropriation? What if I'm singing along to Special Secret Song Inside at a traffic light and someone I know sees me? Is now finally the time when I can listen to Give It Away through a fresh set of ears?

One song that will never be taken off that list is Knock Me Down. I came on board with the Chili Peppers during the Mother's Milk era, and Knock Me Down was my favorite song from that album. I didn't even know it was a single until many years later. Its lyrics reflecting on the death of Hillel Slovak are probably the most straightforward and clear of Keidis' career. As a sixth grader (who probably shouldn't have been anywhere near some of the other songs on that album, like Sexy Mexican Maid and Stone Cold Bush), it did a lot to convey to me that it was okay to talk about my feelings, at a crucial time in my life when I, a very sensitive kid, was dealing with the most bullying and expectation of emotional repression.

It wasn't until relatively recently that I even knew there was a music video starring Alex Winter as (I think) a ghost walking through his former home. As you can imagine, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure was the greatest comedy 11-year-old me had ever seen, and if I had been aware of this crossover at the time, I would have been through the roof. Also with cameos from the Fishbone guys, who I was also into at the time thanks 100% to Anthony shouting them out in the lyrics of Good Time Boys.

And lastly, I must mention Vicky Calhoun's gospel backing vocals! Her contribution is what takes this song from "This is incredibly good Chili Peppers" to "absolutely transcendent" to me. She knocks it out of the park.

That's one of the RHCP songs I can still tolerate now

At a Renegade Soundwave show I attended as a wee 16-year-old in 1991 the promoters handed out New Fast Automatic Daffodils cassingles.

Probably a robbery

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 12 September 2024 13:58 (eight months ago)

"The Perfect Kiss" is my favourite music video ever (after Dexys' "Knowledge of Beauty"). And the 12" is more or less my favourite record by anyone ever justabouts.

The New FADs were/are great, certainly more deserving of next big thingness than some

Lot of good songs here but voting for Primus. That song didn’t sound like anything else on the radio and still doesn’t. I also have fond memories of seeing them live at a small venue for a secret MTV taping in LA where of course they played that song.

Julian Cope! Beautiful Love!

In Praise of....Peggy Suicide by Julian Cope

BrianB, Thursday, 12 September 2024 22:22 (eight months ago)

It feels as though songs like Beautiful Love or Planetary Sit-In are a big wall when it copes to Cope being adopted by young neofolk peeps. They don't deserve him anyway.

Kitchens just over The La's, two absolute classics in my book.

Voted for FNM

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Thursday, 19 September 2024 22:46 (eight months ago)

This is right up my alley. Since this is called Manchester then it has to be Happy Mondays. Could also vote for Spirea X "Chlorine Dream," they were on 4AD if I remember correctly.
