sounds like charli xcx for lame straight people, with guitars naturally.

Is this what people think about when they try to work out what "indie sleaze" means

"Guess" sounds much better than the Dare videos I managed to suffer through, not hearing his voice improves his production work tenfold

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 18 September 2024 23:55 (eight months ago)

I had never heard of him (or the Charli XCX production) before seeing this - https://www.stereogum.com/2280489/lcd-soundsystem-subreddit-bans-shitposting-about-the-dare/news/

where and when the fuck did this dumb term even originate? I swear I never heard it until a year ago and now I see it applied to bands like TV on the Radio. What?

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Thursday, 19 September 2024 02:26 (eight months ago)

nostalgia for the vice magazine nyc era, a bit of fallout from meet me in the bathroom?

this band is fucking terrible

To be fair, so was LCD Soundsystem.

actually isn't that pretty much what "indie sleaze" means

pere uwu (doo rag), Thursday, 19 September 2024 05:40 (eight months ago)

fischerspooner looked cool and their first records were cool and their Kylie remix is like the greatest song of the 00s, this other band though reminds me of 2005/2006 MySpace rock or something, like dollar bin flooded with promos

brimstead, Thursday, 19 September 2024 13:37 (eight months ago)

I enjoyed this explication of indie sleaze - https://notagspodcast.substack.com/p/26-indie-sleaze

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Thursday, 19 September 2024 13:44 (eight months ago)

indie sleaze is when a guy in a trucker hat puts it in your roommate's butt

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 19 September 2024 13:51 (eight months ago)

his Weller-like wan made me contemplate that the Jam were copying a sound 10 years out of date, while this is a 20 on top of 20 year rejiggering of LCD's Heaven 17isms. I guess a got one more of these to live though, 2044s "Blow on My Mobile" by WeeFee.

Theracane Gratifaction (bendy), Thursday, 19 September 2024 14:09 (eight months ago)

if that nyc part of the cultural milieu is now just cranking out knockoffs of the 00s instead of trying to manifest the intellectual dark web into reality or whatever I'm all in

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 19 September 2024 15:56 (eight months ago)

just based on "perfume" alone my problems are that the lyrical conceit of the song isn't sexy or fun in any way. it describes a scenario that horny and sexually insecure guys think will make them more desirable. and then by the end it turns into an "ironic" singalong. the song itself isn't awful imo, i mean it's serviceable but weirdly angry (everything maximally redlined and compressed) (coke). the other thing that really sticks out about how much this sucks is .. oh my god, the video is like objectively worse than some random calvin klein ad from 2002. the shot of this knob in front of the marshall stacks, ugh. so lead-footed. irony deployed as a cover for how witless and joyless it all is. afaict this is for guys who work in finance on a weekend night out.

xp to milo i literally had no idea that charli xcx co-signed these guys. i'm not really surprised (not the biggest fan of charli herself and think her collaborators elevate her.)

he/him hoo-hah (map), Thursday, 19 September 2024 16:17 (eight months ago)

agree that sex pest potential here is above average

he/him hoo-hah (map), Thursday, 19 September 2024 16:18 (eight months ago)

‘girls’ is great but every other song is bad

flopson, Thursday, 19 September 2024 16:23 (eight months ago)

i'm kinda over the sleazy and hedonistic stuff in music idk, it's at best a bit smug and at worst a bit sociopathic, not to be a puritan but when people are trying to be edgy by talking about drugs (irl too obv) it bums me out, cf the drugs murder and mexico thread. sorry to be a mope about that kinda thing btw, it's just probably always been a bummer to me, hedonism at the expense of others.

omar little, Thursday, 19 September 2024 16:26 (eight months ago)

the sleaze bit was mentioned on social media, maybe by an ilxor, as "what if Peaches... but not ironic or goofy"

is being horny on main the vibe

This stuff is easy to hate but I think ilx has pretty much the entire indie sleaze gestalt / canon being enthused abt in one thread or another over the years

lol

ill argue that its because theres a lot of good music that could fit under this umbrella, the partying we did at a certain pt in our lives ... I like a lot of early DFA stuff, for example ... there's threads full of cool and interesting music from this era that is kind of rock-inflected or noise- or punk- inflected dance music that has aged pretty well to me, if you keep an open mind about what can 'qualify' and dont get bogged down in talking about franz ferdinand and the a-trak remix of the yeah yeah yeahs theres a lot of cool shit that has the right energy ... MU or Juan Maclean or Simian Mobile Disco or etc etc etc

xheugy eddy (D-40), Thursday, 19 September 2024 22:51 (eight months ago)

I think the No Tags people are otm that the current "indie sleaze" "revival" is not even really about the music or a sound, but a marketing effort that's more about fashion, nostalgia for this idea of partying in a large cosmopolitan city that was still affordable to live in, pre-social media, etc.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 20 September 2024 14:14 (eight months ago)

im usually amenable to the idea that housing and economics are the root cause of all phenomena but i think it’s mostly about fashion music aesthetics in this case. the timing is just too perfect, it fits the 20 year cycle to a tee. like how 10 years ago everything started to look 90s. if it was about partying in a city with affordable housing it could’ve been a revival of any era

flopson, Friday, 20 September 2024 14:25 (eight months ago)

somewhere around 2008-9 there was the switch from the trashy vice magazine electro house disco punk era to a cozy homespun pitchfork cardigan indie rock bands with animal names era. im curious to see if there will be an indie sleaze-style revival of the latter in a few years. hope not

flopson, Friday, 20 September 2024 14:35 (eight months ago)

yeah I was always confused how hipster went from Mickey Avalon to Edwin Sharpe or whatever

brimstead, Friday, 20 September 2024 14:37 (eight months ago)

people aging out of a demographic but still being tagged as hipsters

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 20 September 2024 14:40 (eight months ago)

hipster followed a similar path as indie, which went from weird underground working-class (or pseudo-working class, or lower-middle class) to NPR lifestyle. a guy i went to college with is a frontman here in L.A. for what he proudly calls "the first indie rock tribute band" and they play parties and weddings and corporate events, covering MGMT and Portugal, the Man and LCD Soundsystem and Imagine Dragons and fun. and Black Keys etc.

yeah absolutely, i'm still a big fan of those early lcd tracks. and haha, i play that a-trak remix a lot, especially over the next month or so, usually after "cannibal" by kesha. of course i was shaped by ilm but i'm also in the american west and trying to "live here" more, so in some ways i myself am a bit of a faker. i'm warming to what less cool people, or the queer people in my area, bonded to, and finding that a lot of indie-flavored party music just doesn't have the goods when it comes to being something a person can dream to.

he/him hoo-hah (map), Friday, 20 September 2024 16:25 (eight months ago)

ha my 18 y/o played a song of this at rando and i said "whoa this is just lifting lcd soundsystem" and she said "yeah that's what everyone says" so i lectured her to the extent i knew/remember about dfa told her to check there from like 2002. you all sound just like old people and so do i. the sleaze you want is more like the dan.

ivy., Wednesday, 25 September 2024 05:08 (eight months ago)

It’s quite funny to see ‘indie sleaze’ explainers that position it as a genre / time period rather than an aesthetic and end up incorporating everything from Kate Nash to Kings of Leon to Grimes.

Snow Strippers are probably the most obvious example of a band going for the vibe (mandatory Cobrasnake photoshoot inclusive), Daine too. There’s a bunch of others but the music seems much more influenced by Crystal Castles and 10,000 gecs, for the most part, than LCD, etc.

ShariVari, Wednesday, 25 September 2024 12:33 (eight months ago)

crystal castles is basically og indie sleaze era

flopson, Wednesday, 25 September 2024 13:21 (eight months ago)

there was a parents' night out fundraiser for one of my kid's former schools where the theme was early 2000s, they held it at a notoriously douchey upscale hipster bar and they had Cobrasnake there to take photos, i was appalled.
