astral weeks is a great choice. another album which simply does not get used up by listening to it. it has this transcendental quality and is so warm and life affirming at the same time.

Slayer's Reign In Blood. And since it's only 28 minutes long, I'd have time for the Bad Brains' yellow tape, too.

I used to think about this question a lot on turbulent flights as a teenager, funnily enoughbecause I always had a discman with 5 or 6 cd's to get through it, and i'd survived a plane crash in my childhood so could be a nervous flyer
I wouldn't spend the hour listening to an album, of course, but hypothetically it would be World of Echothat record has fulfilled its humanity and doesn't need any more time.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebore,_vol._2Really loud, probably. And then when the music stopped I’d have ten minutes to hug and talk to my loved ones before I dropped dead.
― trm (tombotomod), Friday, 11 October 2024 18:22 (two months ago) link
it's probably better to talk to the loved ones before you do rebore. even if you leave 10 minutes for them at the end, you're gonna end up talking about rebore for at least half of that, possibly all of it. whereas if you talk beforehand, you can have a heart to heart and then cut it off with a direct "i have to go listen to boredoms now"

The thing about Astral Weeks is that it is an album that knows that you only have one hour to live, which might make it the perfect choice or might be disconcerting, it's hard to tell.
I think I might choose Highway 61 Revisited so that I could end with "Desolation Row," a song that always brings me a sense of deep calm and peace - not because the song itself is peaceful but just because I find how good it is reassuring.

Gene Clark - No Other is how I'd go out. I get a little teary listening to that one even when I'm not on my deathbed. A very cinematic swan song.
― InternationalWaters, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 17:17 (two months ago) link
If my one hour to live started right now, I'd go with Susanne Sundfør's Music For People in Trouble. I've been going through some shit lately, and that album has been my security blanket.
If it were my last hour and I didn't know it was my last hour, - like, I get hit by a bus or a tree falls on me or something - I'd want it to be something ridiculous and fun. Weird Al Yankovic In 3D, maybe? Ramones Too Tough To Die?
But if it were the last hour of my life, and maybe I'd had a long illness or was in hospice or something, and my family was all there? I'm really not sure.

I should make a 57-minute playlist for this situation, just in case. (3 minutes silence at the end would be good.) It would have "Tighten Up," "Move On Up" and "Up With People" on it, but I'm not sure what else.

― peace, man, Wednesday, 16 October 2024 18:57 (two months ago) link
Would almost surely be a piano recording, as there's a peace there I'd imagine I want, even if it's intense. Money Jungle? Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou? One of Julius Eastman's long four-piano works? I've never heard Ellington's Live at the Whitney, recorded in the last year of his life. Maybe I should save it for that hour.

Along the lines of Weird Al and The Ramones, I'd be happy with Free to Be...You and Me because it has some primal childhood connections and also feels like the best intentions of anything I can think of, and is funny and human. Might as well end with a little party.
