Man, literally no contest. Clicked Fugazi before I even read the albums listed from either band.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2024 15:26 (seven months ago)

Same. Even if Steady Diet is relatively weak compared to the other two, damn what a trilogy.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Monday, 21 October 2024 15:38 (seven months ago)

saw both of these bands on their first uk visits, can't even put into words how stupendous fugazi were - manchester boardwalk with sweat dripping off the walls, so much energy and fucking lifeforce in that one small room, even clutching that memory still feels like i'm holding a giant pulsating heart in my hand. that and the young gods at the same venue around the same time, that pretty much ruined all future gigs for me. pavement otoh, eh they were ok i guess?

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Monday, 21 October 2024 16:14 (seven months ago)

my two least favorite Fugazi albums are Steady Diet and Kill Take, so Pavement

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Monday, 21 October 2024 16:16 (seven months ago)

Love both bands but voted Fugazi without a second thought. I'm a Steady Diet partisan--I think it's a great album. I know people are down on the production, but it has a murky quality I really like, and that I think suits (at least some of) the material. Plus "Reclamation" would be in contention for my single favorite of theirs

JRN, Monday, 21 October 2024 16:18 (seven months ago)

Wow, kill taker as someone's least fave Fugazi? That's the first I've heard that.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2024 16:40 (seven months ago)

Repeater and In On The Kill Taker are my 2 faves but I love them all. I love all the pavement albums too.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 21 October 2024 17:00 (seven months ago)

I don’t get the dislike for Steady Diet, it’s my favourite Fugazi album. I love how tight yet slinky they are on it.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Monday, 21 October 2024 17:03 (seven months ago)

I don't dislike Steady Diet at all. It just suffers in comparison (again, very much relatively speaking).

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Monday, 21 October 2024 17:20 (seven months ago)

I started listening to Fugazi with the first EP, and loved everything they did through Repeater and the 3 Songs 7", but then Steady Diet... fell flat for me and I wandered off. I only came back and played catchup with their discography a few years ago, and even then it stayed at the bottom of the list for me. Red Medicine is my favorite of their later stuff but Kill Taker is great, too. And I really don't need to go into my hatred of Pavement again, so I won't.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Monday, 21 October 2024 17:27 (seven months ago)

Steady Diet is kind of sterile, splitting the difference between the early stuff and Repeater, but it is so impressively tight and the songs are great.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 October 2024 17:38 (seven months ago)

Heh, my indie rock origin story: I bought Repeater + 3 Songs and Trigger Cut+2 the same day during a HS spring break on the Côte d'Azur.

Kill Taker's my fav Fugazi record, maybe not by leaps and bounds, but it's just about perfect.

KPH, Monday, 21 October 2024 17:47 (seven months ago)

Since this is not a better live band poll, Pavement (who tbc were great when I saw them a year or two ago).

Chris L, Monday, 21 October 2024 17:54 (seven months ago)

as i recently mentioned on the 80s thread if ian did all the singing on fugazi albums i would probably own every fugazi album but he doesn't so i own none of them. BUT i did discover the post-Rites of Spring album that Guybrow made and i really like it a lot and it sells for a ton but i am keeping it anyway so there you go i finally get to say something nice about him. that record rules. i wasn't a Rites of Spring fan and i had no idea they did anything cool after they broke up. but, anyway, i love everything pavement ever did and they are very definitely one of my fave guitar bands of the 90s so voting for them is easy.

scott seward, Monday, 21 October 2024 18:09 (seven months ago)

the pavement run that is important to me vs. only the beginning of the fugazi run that is important to me

na (NA), Monday, 21 October 2024 18:43 (seven months ago)

Scott do you mean the One Last Wish album?

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 21 October 2024 21:48 (seven months ago)

You probably can guess how I voted here.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 21 October 2024 22:10 (seven months ago)

"Scott do you mean the One Last Wish album?"

no. Happy Go Licky. from 1988. i had no idea what it was when i pulled it out of a box at the store. it's cool. dubby and dark. post-punk. it was reissued later on CD with other stuff by Dischord.

Fugazi by several billion light years (and I like Pavement)

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 21 October 2024 23:19 (seven months ago)

Sebadoh never got as big as Pavement but they would be the band I think was on a similar wavelength.

I liked the Grifters better than them both, but liked all three.

Fugazi and the Jesus Lizard were the two best live bands I saw back then. Both of them were just forces of nature.

The variety of awesomeness on that string of 3 by PAVEMENT!

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 01:18 (seven months ago)

i understand the reflex but this is pavement's three best albums against one of fugazi's best albums

(if you rate fugazi that much higher overall, then okay!)

mookieproof, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 01:39 (seven months ago)

i always think of ilm as being Pavement City. goo goo and gah gah for Pavement. but i have probably never gone on a Fugazi thread so maybe I missed all the Fugazimania over the years.

scott seward, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 01:51 (seven months ago)

fugazi is cool; pavement is not

mookieproof, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 01:53 (seven months ago)

Gonna be some sad Fugazi fans here when Pavement wins in a landslide lol

heck the last five posters with the earlnash and the nicky lo-fi for pete's sake...

scott seward, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 02:41 (seven months ago)

i know it's pointless to hate on pavement on ilm on so many levels and i ignore all the pavement threads but i just gotta say somewhere that i'm extremely malkmus intolerant.

he/him hoo-hah (map), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 02:52 (seven months ago)

i voted fugazi and i've never even really listened to them haha

he/him hoo-hah (map), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 02:54 (seven months ago)

I've probably bored on about this before, but in the UK, I was listening to and worshipping Fugazi from around 1991 but didn't come into contact with Pavement—like, at all. I know maybe three Pavement songs. I'm still waiting for my Pavement phase.

Ftr, if they turn out to be better than Fugazi, I'll eat my socks live on the internet.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 08:32 (seven months ago)

alpine static, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 17:16 (seven months ago)

Back in the day I would have voted Fugazi, but I much prefer listening to Pavement these days. All the furrowed brow 90's stuff feels less appealing to me now.

Re: lackadaisical, I often think of Malkmus in Slow Century talking about the Wowee Zowee singles (Rattled by the Rush and Father to a Sister of Thought) as the follow ups to their sort of hit "Cut Your Hair". Paraphrasing, he said, "I was smoking a lot of pot, but they sounded like hits to me."

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 17:30 (seven months ago)

Both lackadaisical and intense could be positive or negative depending on your orientation toward that type of guy.

I love both bands, but in this one I have to give the slight edge to Pavement. If this was Kill Taker/Red Medicine/End Hits (my Fugazi loving prime years), it would def by Fugazi.

Honestly I know Fugazi are a better band. And I like them. But if I had to listen to three albums in a row I’d choose Pavement bc intense men make me uncomfortable in heavy doses.

I do not understand the love for Kill Taker, I mean of course they were one of the best bands on earth when it came out, but there is just not enough space in the sound of that record for me, it is so claustrophobic and full

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Saturday, 26 October 2024 18:48 (six months ago)

sorry for the negativity. i just think even if pavement vs fugazi is a mildly interesting question that says something about you, the 'first three albums' thing feels very arbitrary. especially for these 2 bands! they have almost eerie symmetry of a similar amount of music over mostly the same time period! like, fugazi means a lot more to me overall, but i'd have to vote for pavement here mainly because they peaked early.

some dude, Saturday, 26 October 2024 23:05 (six months ago)

It was slim is an alien that came up with the 1st three album thing but I thought it was a great different idea and ran with it. I decided to expand it out from just being SST bands.
I was going to do Orbital vs Underworld next but since a new album just came out I prob won't bother as I assume everyone would rather discuss that.

Anybody is free to run their own if the subjects are not to their tastes.
