alpine static, Friday, 8 November 2024 17:10 (one month ago) link

wait, what's the difference between record of the year and song of the year? Is there also a track of the year?

silverfish, Friday, 8 November 2024 17:57 (one month ago) link

Although "record" often refers to any recording of music, Record of the Year differs from Song of the Year or Album of the Year:

Record of the Year is awarded for a single or for one track from an album. This award goes to the performing artist, the producer, recording engineer and/or mixer for that song. In this sense, "record" means a particular recorded song, not i

ts composition or an album of songs.

Song of the Year is also awarded for a single or individual track, but the recipient of this award is the songwriter who actually wrote the lyrics and/or melodies to the song. "Song" in this context means the song as composed, not its recording.

In both cases, the accent marks signal pronunciation rather than emphasis.

André is a common French name, which uses an acute accent to denote that the letter is pronounced as "ay" instead of dropped or swallowed (as in "cadre"). Because the name is so common, nobody would actually be confused if the accent mark weren't there, but it is often retained nonetheless.

Similarly, the name Beyoncé uses an accent mark to indicate that it does not rhyme with "sconce."

there's loads of under 35s on RYM. Fare more than over 35s. Swifties favour metacritic apparently (they take that score very seriously)

Stereogum - Best New Artists
https://www.stereogum.com/2286447/best-new-artists-2024/lists/best-new-artists/

Best New Bands” of the preceding 12 months, Stereogum has evolved. Today, it is my unique honor to present the first edition of our Best New Artists list. It is exactly the same thing as the Best New Bands lists you know and love, just with a more accurate title.

For this project, the Stereogum staff evaluated our listening histories and the news and features we published since last fall to determine who we think are the best bands, singers, producers, rappers, and musicians to have emerged this year. As always, “new” is subjective; we prioritized artists who put out their debut full-length album this year, but that’s not a hard cutoff for eligibility. Maybe the artist has been around for a while but just signed to a label this year. Maybe they have a hefty Bandcamp catalog but their most recent project was a significant level up. Either way, we’re acknowledging artists who’ve made considerable strides and earned bigger spots on our radar over the past 12 months — sometimes it really all just comes down to vibes.

If you’re an avid Stereogum reader — first of all, thank you — a lot of these names should already ring a bell. We might’ve named them a Band To Watch. They might’ve earned themselves an Album Of The Week accolade. Stereogum might’ve even presented one of their concerts this year. The Best New Bands Artists list is not a year-end list. But our 2024 In Review package is just around the corner, so you’ll probably be seeing some of these names again soon enough.

And now we present you with Stereogum’s 40 Best New Artists Of 2024, listed in alphabetical order. Below that you’ll find playlists on Spotify and Apple Music highlighting the honorees. —Abby Jones

albumoftheyear has it's 2024 banner green because I suspect they expect BRAT to win AOTY but it's funny how none of the list counted so far have helped pushed it anywhere near the top 50.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:26 (one month ago) link

From what I can gather it's going to be a fight to the top between The Cure and Charli XCX.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:34 (one month ago) link

Charli XCX and Chapel Roan releasing the most beloved pop albums in such a stacked year for pop releases was not in my bingo card.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 03:45 (one month ago) link

Wasn’t the Roan album from last year?

Grape Fired At Czar From Crack Battery (President Keyes), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:15 (one month ago) link

yeah but "year of impact"

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:39 (one month ago) link

A few ILM pop elite were definitely in on it last year and it made it to #56 on the top 77 albums list which disqualifies it from appearing this year but it would have very likely made it way higher if nommed this year. I still expect some songs to make it to the tracks poll this year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 14 November 2024 04:45 (one month ago) link

But you're right, allow me to rephrase:

Charli XCX and Chapel Roan becoming the most beloved pop acts in such a stacked year for pop releases was not in my bingo card.

https://www.stereogum.com/2290987/the-best-jazz-albums-of-2024/columns/ugly-beauty/

I didn't do a typical jazz list for Stereogum; instead, I listed 10 categories as follows:

Archival Discoveries
Leaders of the New School
New Age Spiritualists
The New Complexity
The Nordics
The Old-School Avant-Garde
The Pianists
The South Africans
The Traditionalists
What Do You Even Call That?

And within each category I cited five really good albums, then chose an "If I Had To Pick Just One" winner. The winners are:

Alice Coltrane, The Carnegie Hall Concert
Nubya Garcia, Odyssey
Shabaka, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace
Patricia Brennan, Breaking Stretch
Lisa Ullén, Heirloom
Wadada Leo Smith/Amina Claudine Myers, Central Park’s Mosaics Of Reservoir, Lake, Paths And Gardens
Matthew Shipp Trio, New Concepts In Piano Trio Jazz
Thembi Dunjana, God Bless iKapa. God Bless Mzantsi.
The Black Art Jazz Collective, Truth To Power
Nala Sinephro, Endlessness

DJ Mag’s top albums of 2024
https://djmag.com/features/dj-mags-top-albums-of-2024

In 2024, electronic artists explored the intricacies of identity and cultural history via club-focused LPs, while others stepped away from the dancefloor’s hard and fast hedonism in favour of hazier soundscapes influenced by downtempo, dub and ambient music. Visionary rap, jazz and pop musicians and niche genre pioneers alike reached aspirational new heights on a global scale, while grime, drum & bass and jungle thrived thanks to albums from longstanding figureheads and contemporary torchbearers. Here, DJ Mag offers its unranked overview of the albums that made the past 12 months so memorable for dance and electronic music in all its forms

Featuring kwn, Amyl and The Sniffers, Charli xcx, Skepta, John Glacier, Doechii, MJ Lenderman, Katie Gavin and more.

You’d think it would be easy whittling down the best tracks of the year into a list of 100, but as the NOTION team found out last week, it’s actually incredibly difficult. In this playlist, we’ve rounded up our favourites from emerging stars and pop mainstays, acknowledging jungle’s resurgence, Amapiano’s impact on the mainstream and reflecting on a new class of British rap, indie and underground music. Oh, and we haven’t forgotten about the record that completely reconfigured the pop culture landscape – you know, that bright green one?

Boomkat via email have just announced their album of the year.

Our Album Of The Year, 2024 - Milan W’s ‘Leave Another Day’ 🥀 ✨

https://boomkat.com/products/leave-another-day

Milan W. is an old head on young shoulders; and ‘Leave Another Day’ is his magnum opus, gilding and binding aspects of dusky country, folk-rock, blues, chamber-like jazz noir, spangled kosmische and indie-pop, all rendered with flushes of synthetic warmth perfectly suspended in-the-mix, floating moodily above it all. Its dozen songs carry a modest, lowkey vitality and slowness of thought we’ve come to associate with that strange, gently undulating sliver of Europe where things occur at their own time, out-of-joint.

Simply put, we've played it more than any other album this year - its magnificently swooning collection of earworms, melancholy hooks, and nostalgic references to so many formative records by Felt, HTRK, early The Verve, classic Les Disques Du Crépuscule, aspects of early The The, Enno Velthuys, and the most crushed Joanne Robertson & Dean Blunt jams - all fleetingly come to mind - but in the end it's just very much it's own, special thing.

The album has been sold out pretty much since the week it came out, but we've managed to get a special, limited haul of copies in celebration of it hitting our AOTY spot.

Enjoy.

more on context of The Fader list

There is a great run of four songs in the middle of this list. It comprises a blissful track from Japanese experimentalist Hakushi Hasegawa, a burst of blown-out fury from OsamaSon, a breathtaking seven-minute Urdu-Hindi epic by Sheherazaad, and an inescapable pop smash from Sabrina Carpenter. It's a neat encapsulation of this publication's genre-blurring ethos, an idea established a quarter of a century ago and carried forward today by the sharpest group of music journalists out there. This list, like everything we’ve run this year, whiplashes between sounds and ideas and languages. It is chaotic, and we hope you love that as much as we do. — Alex Robert Ross

Right on schedule, list fatigue sets in and there's more focus on the non-herd picks. Of the many Lucky 13 genre lists, these might help some.

Ambient, New Age & Post-Rock,
https://fastnbulbous.com/lucky-24/#ambient

A few years ago I took a deep dive into the rabbithole of current post-rock, and quickly overdosed. There’s so much of it, I can’t even comprehend how so many of them exist. And yet, bands like Japan’s MONO, who have been at it for a quarter century, have become kind of the gold standard. The albums have often exuded a Zen spirituality, which feels even more pronounced on Oath. This was underscored by their current triumphant 25th anniversary tour, where a 12 piece orchestra helped them sound more magisterial than ever. A recent show at Chicago’s Thalia Hall reportedly had dozens of hardened metalheads openly weeping. Drummer Dahm Majuri Cipolla a Breeders t-shirt in tribute to Steve Albini, who recorded the album.

Bubbling under: Acid Rooster, Rafael Toral, Suss, Midwife, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Held By Trees & Martin Smith, Seawind Battery, Tashi Wada, Jeffrey Silverstein, Belong, Moon Wiring Club, Cowboy Sadness, Chuck Johnson, Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn, Robin Guthrie, Maya Ongaku, Ephilexia, Porta d’Oro, Lifted, Powers/Rolin Duo, Total Blue, Astrid Sonne, claire rousay, Black Decelerant, Lynn Avery & Cole Pulice, Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin, Max Richter, The Balloonist. | More.
