I went to see this last week, mainly because I love Lung Leg and can't believe there's a documentary even partially about them out there, but all was very interesting, don't want to get into spoilers but there were some kind of astonishing through-threads and most if not all of these bands didn't get a fair shot at making the music they wanted to.

It's directed by Carla J Easton, who used to be in Futuristic Retro Champions and TeenCanteen.

So, anyone else seen it, or planning to? Or wants to discuss any of these groups, most of whom do not seem to have threads on here?

oh I saw some posts about this, probably on Lung Leg's FB. I would like to see this, although tbh I only know Strawberry Switchblade and Lung Leg and I have one song by Sally Skull out of those. (I thought I knew the Ettes, but the Ettes I know are American)

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 22:51 (seven months ago)

where is Pink Kross band?

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 22:52 (seven months ago)

They also talk about Vesuvius a bit, my favourite record label along with Guided Missile. Mo-Mo from Lung Leg was on the post-screening interview panel when I saw it, and I'll just say she has been through an incredibly rough quarter century.

They do also talk about Pink Kross, though not for long! The other group from the 90s they miss is Golden Starlet / International Strike Force though I think if I remember right they were from the North East, like Kenickie.

John Backflip (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 8 November 2024 22:57 (seven months ago)

yeah Golden Starlet were from Middlesbrough. love them, I have a few Golden Starlet and International Strike Force records

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:07 (seven months ago)

Ohhh super interesting, thanks! I was at school with one of His Latest Flame.

Maresn3st, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:27 (seven months ago)

I looked up Vesuvius, I do have a few on that label but they're all Lung Leg/Yummy Fur

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:46 (seven months ago)

Jane from Lung Leg was in another band on Vesuvius, called Dick Johnson. Think they were all-female and all-Scottish too maybe?

John Backflip (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 8 November 2024 23:49 (seven months ago)

saw it. loved it. full marks from me.

stirmonster, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:50 (seven months ago)

i've seen a few people grumble about the shop assistants not being in it but of course they were not a true girl band.

stirmonster, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:51 (seven months ago)

oh I have a few Dick Johnson records! just none of them are on Vesuvius. Disposable Darling is the best one iirc

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:52 (seven months ago)

tbf I would like to see the Shop Assistants get a bit more recognition, they were in that Glasgow indie documentary Teenage Superstars a bit but yeah not really a "girl band" so am not grumbling

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:54 (seven months ago)

ah there was a bloke in the Fizzbombs

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:55 (seven months ago)

there was a bloke in the Vultures too. fair enough then

Colonel Poo, Friday, 8 November 2024 23:56 (seven months ago)

also, shop assistants were of course an edinburgh band. :)

stirmonster, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:01 (seven months ago)

I realised that after I posted lol. the doc is subtitled "the sound of young Scotland" but does seem to be mostly about Glasgow bands, but it does list the Shop Assistants in the blurb so I think I can be excused for that mishap

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:04 (seven months ago)

i was correcting myself!

stirmonster, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:07 (seven months ago)

One of Dick Johnson used to do the door at the Hope & Anchor, can't recall her name but God she was so fkn cool.

Maresn3st, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:07 (seven months ago)

but then the ettes were from edinburgh so yr right, it's - "the sound of young Scotland"

stirmonster, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:08 (seven months ago)

oh lol now I think we're both confused - the doc this thread is for is for the whole of Scotland afaik - the documentary I mentioned that has the Shop Assistants in is from a few years ago called Teenage Superstars - The Sound of Young Scotland but is mostly about the 80s Glasgow (and environs) indie scene, but for some reason has the Shop Assistants in it even though they're from Edinburgh. I think because of the connection to the Pastels

anyway I love the Shop Assistants

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:17 (seven months ago)

maybe this might get the record companies to finally reissue some of the strawberry switchblade stuff? not that i haven't already got most of it but it would be good to see them get paid. crazy that its not happened before now tbh. and they have some fantastic deep cuts too ('michael who walks by night' still gives me the goosebumps). and, god it would be nice to own this on vinyl...

Ha ha! i think you are right.

i need to see that Teenage Superstars.

I love the Shop Assistants as well; a formative part of my youth and still sound great.

x post

I am trying to make a companion mix for this but The Ettes are very hard to find. This is their only release, a promo tape for the film's kickstarter

They also had a Myspace, but nothing there is working of course

Rose and Jill of Strawberry Switchblade have talked for the first time in decades and even agreed to be photographed together at recent screenings, which is a huge surprise for SS fans

PaulTMA, Saturday, 9 November 2024 15:14 (seven months ago)

Teenage Superstars - The Sound of Young Scotland but is mostly about the 80s Glasgow (and environs) indie scene

I don't think it's deliberate, it's more that Glasgow has always had a stronger music scene with more venues. A lot of these bands are from the environs rather than Glasgow itself - the Bellshill bands, JAMC etc.

Definitely waiting for a chance to see this — supported the Kickstarter for it years back!
