Kim Deal

There are threads that reference Kim and Kristin Hersh, Kim and Nina Nastasia, Kim and Kim Gordon.

But there is no thread solely dedicated, as far as I can tell, to the most unfuckwithable figure in rock 'n' roll over the past 30 years and the music she makes.

So now there is.

Her new (and first) solo album Nobody Loves You More is terrific.

Absolutely wonderful profile piece in the NYT recently - does her justice, which I don't say lightly since she is pretty much my favourite musician of all time.

What I’ve heard of the new album has a very The Amps feel, inasmuch as this /could/ have been called the Breeders, but there’s a casualness, a freeness, and a resulting intimacy that a name with fewer expectations brings. Looking forward to checking out the whole thing.

It’s an incredible year for musicians that I loved as an adolescent making excellent new music that actively sounds like 60-70 year olds finding musical inspiration in their own pasts but to write from their current perspectives, without doing cheap or hollow retreads.

Very excited for this.

really enjoyed the tracks i’ve heard so far. i tend to feel - a bad prejudice perhaps - that later music like this tends not to recapture the vim, the thing that impelled them to music in the first place. revisiting a place rather than newly exploring.

not at all the case here - playful, strong tracks, and that place is has an idiosyncratic, current feel to it, while still related to what they’ve done before. looking forward to hearing the whole thing and reading the article.

it's pretty amazing, imo - it sounds like something new from Kim (a solo record) but also shares all the little idiosyncrasies that make her music so singular. which i guess is not a surprise, but i was a little worried about this one. turns out it sounds like Kim in a whole new (but not too new) way.

in the end, it's just her completely unique and distinctive point of view that comes through in everything she does, new album included.

sic otm, too, re: could've been a Breeders record, but there's a casualness, a freeness, etc.

I liked this little tidbit that apparently didn't make the final NYT profile:

The Deal sisters started taking ballet classes at age 4, and Kelley said that’s why they count in eight. “It makes sense when you listen to her music and you just can’t sit still,” Kelley said. “You know, it moves. It literally moves you.” When Kim was playing her the new songs, “They would be sung and a dance would accompany it,” she said. “Oh, here’s a leg kick. Boom, here’s where the trumpet comes in.”

I had to Shazam "Crystal Breath" when it came on the radio. Was happy to see it was her. Sounded like some obscure classic I was missing out on.

Enjoying this - it is very her, and I mean that in a good way.

I obviously need to sit with the whole thing more but “A Good Time Pushed” is a standout.

I don't remember the last time I sat and listened to an album on release day and totally focused on it, eyes closed. It's really good and the only bad thing I can say about it is that we probably won't get release from her for like a million years and I'm already sad about it because I am a greedy Kim Deal piggy.

Cow_Art, Friday, 22 November 2024 16:27 (one month ago) link

Sounds like Kim Deal with a brass and string sections.

"Wish I Was" is like a lost Amps song

It was an instrumental on her solo 7” series back in 2014

This album is gorgeous

“Are You Mine” was my favorite song from her singles project, and what she’s done with it here is stunning. I was sitting in the backyard, the first really chilly day and it was playing through my headphones and the wind was pushing the trees into the sun and Kim Deal is the best.

I like this a lot. “Coast” gives me strong Blondie vibes — Sunday Girl in particular

The one about her mom is unlike anything in her catalog; I didn't need to know a thing about before listening.

(I see on googling that every review says that so not an original thought)

I should avoid this thread. I was a big fan up to last splash but everything since then including this one has left me cold

kinda staying in line for Albini to have not recorded the two most electronic-forward tracks, although i was kinda tickled at the fact "Big Ben Beat" sounds like her stab at Big Black with Sugar Ray's "Fly" guitar riff thrown in.

yeah I'm not hearing what's special about this album yet. I'll give it a few more tries.

I like its ramshackle melodicism and cracked affect — its Kim Dealness! With the chance to get a bit outside the Breeders' orbit, musically. (tho obviously a lot of the songs could also be Breeders songs.)

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 25 November 2024 22:14 (three weeks ago) link

Looking forward to checking out the whole thing.

👍🏼

et a earwig (sic), Monday, 25 November 2024 23:09 (three weeks ago) link

> cracked affect

Crystal Breath is the kind of collage of licks Deal makes catchy in a way almost no one else can. She knows where to place all these fragments in a way that makes what should be jarring really poppy instead.

Theracane Gratifaction (bendy), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 18:15 (three weeks ago) link

I'm prepared to say this is the best album she's made.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 November 2024 14:52 (three weeks ago) link

I don’t know if this is better than the Amps album - for me, Deal at her best - but who knows? Time will tell.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 29 November 2024 15:06 (three weeks ago) link

I've lived w/it a week and am convinced.

“Summerland” seems like something she should be singing on screen in an MGM musical.
