...and if not, who is?

Call and Response are funny, because most of the band seem to just be riding the twee twain for all the chicks and boiz, yet the lead singer seems to be dead serious -- she reminds me of some third grade teacher I once knew at a fundamentalist school.

I'd like to see them live to see whether the happiness they exude on CD is mirrored in their live performances. I don't think they've ever played live in the UK tho.

The titles are so Free Design..there's a similarity in the sound too. The only reason I mentioned this is that I was thinking of adding FD to the thread. However, I reckon The Lovin' Spoonful take the biscuit here...

C&R are my favourite band in the world right now!

The Happiest Guys in the World are the happiest band in the world.

Haven't heard them, but I guess they have to try damned hard to be happier than the Polyphonic Spree.

What's up here? Is there some kind of trend for happy bands?

We've been trying for years with Tomorrow's World, but for some reason people seem to think positive=joke

C & R are living proof that a band can be funky and twee at the same time. It's interesting that all of the reviews of the C&R album concentrate on the retro element of their music, comparing them to the Zombies, Jackson 5, Mamas & Papas (I'm not joking) whilst ignoring the aspects of their sound which could never have been achieved then.

My favourite track on the album is the second one "All Night Long", which is at least a thousand times better than the Lionel Richie track of the same name.

I have never heard the Free Design. But I wonder whether the Stereolab song is about them.

...certainly is, or at least, inspired by them.

I was under the impression that C&R did aspire to play shows in London at some point. At least one C&R member was over here a few months back.

The new indiepop band from my hometown, Grand Rapids, is called The Icicles - and they are pretty happy too.

Freedesign = BITTER AND TWISTED!

I emailed C&R about playing in the UK a few months ago - they say they are still waiting for someone to license their lp over here to fund the trip. I think Track and Field offered to do so, but Emperor Norton were holding out for a bigger hitter. I guess they have a new lp due out next year, so they might come over then. In the mean time there are a couple of new mp3s at http://www.callandresponsemusic.com. The guitarist guy has a bunch of mp3s of his own stuff up there too.

C&R promo team tried spamming the Bigtakeover mailing list a little while back. It was pretty amusing the amount of negative response they got.
But if you want really happy The Evaporators are right up there.

Call and Response were thee band of last summer for me. Great great rhythm section.

I offered the band free golf lessons if they'd play in Cleveland. Sadly no response to my call.

The All-Girl Summertime Fun Band or whatever it's called seems like a happy outfit. Maybe there's pain behind that smile though.

They're the kind of thing I usually get behind, but none of it makes me as happy as they seem to want, and that "Rollerskate" song bugs the shit out of me.

Curt (cgould), Friday, 6 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The All-Girl Summer Fun Band, from the one show I've seen, is indeed happier than Call and Response, from the two shows I've seen. Haven't heard either band's albums.

Sadly, the Happies are overall not as happy as their name implies, although sometimes they get pretty happy.

All-Girl Summer Fun Band have saddish songs about automobile troubles and crappy boyfriends though.

I fab AGSFB though.

It's a terrible name, isn't it?

riding the bus down mission street last night, i sat down next to a young lady and we start chatting and she's the bass player for this band. very nice to chat with, we shared a moment over the mary hansen news, she gave me a CD, i was happy.

i think jonanthan richman is happier on a whole.
all girl summer fun band are instantaneously happier but not with their entire lives
call and response are happy because they are relaxed however, who knows in other cases
jonathan seems to have everything figured out though
