I am not generally a nostalgic person but I have enjoyed watching a lot of old early 90s 120 Minutes recently. There's a lot of them up on YouTube.

Sadly hardly any MTV Europe ones though... not that I had MTV at the time in the UK.

Treblekicker, Sunday, 29 December 2024 17:59 (five months ago)

I love Danielle Dax, but Blast the Human Flower is a huge step down from everything else she did. She hadn’t performed live in, what, 30 years now?

beamish13, Sunday, 29 December 2024 18:25 (five months ago)

If you’re nostalgic for this, Matt Pinfield is a DJ on nonprofit station 88.5 FM and has a show that deep-dives into bands he featured/interviewed on 120 Minutes

beamish13, Sunday, 29 December 2024 18:27 (five months ago)

Reasonable odds I watched this in real time, although it would have been Christmas break if my senior year in college and I don’t remember if I was at my parents’ house (without cable) or my girlfriend’s parents’ (with cable).

“Radio Free Europe” is kind of a joker here, I won’t pick it because it’s not really of the 120 Minutes era. Probably “Mandinka,” but could vote for several.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 29 December 2024 19:41 (five months ago)

I saw this in a “borrowed” house in Thousand Oaks California visiting my widowed grandfather in an unusually cold Christmas season there.

The Whimsical Muse (Boring, Maryland), Sunday, 29 December 2024 20:04 (five months ago)

I’ll follow that logic and also take Mandinka over REM

that's not my post, Sunday, 29 December 2024 20:04 (five months ago)

Why the hell is “Radio Free Europe”’in there?

Josefa, Sunday, 29 December 2024 20:07 (five months ago)

Was the JW Harding a Roky Erikson cover from that tribute album that came out around then? … I never saw 120 minutes, but the SF station Live 105 played most of these (this was before it went to shit in the mid-late 90s) so I never felt like I was missing out … tough call between Mandinka, Sisters of Mercy and the Siouxsie cover which is probably my fave Iggy Pop pop song (as opposed the other faves that are more experimental and/or messy)

sarahell, Sunday, 29 December 2024 20:15 (five months ago)

I guess “The Passenger” is not really of that moment either, though I think it’s my favorite thing here. Strange to think now that that version came only ten years after Iggy’s version.

Josefa, Sunday, 29 December 2024 20:16 (five months ago)

I think the Front 242 was definitely a banger of its time

sarahell, Sunday, 29 December 2024 20:17 (five months ago)

interesting to see goo goo dolls here with a bunch of alt rock heavyweights

“madonna of the wasps” is looking like my pick, a perfect outsider pop song. love the way he pronounces “madonner”

now TAYNE i can get into (voodoo chili), Monday, 30 December 2024 02:00 (five months ago)

The GGD song is very Replacementsy. Pretty good.

jmm, Monday, 30 December 2024 02:14 (five months ago)

1 Happy Mondays – Kinky Afro (World Premiere)
2 Depeche Mode – World In My Eyes
3 Ride – Like A Daydream
4 New Order – Round And Round
5 Cocteau Twins – Heaven Or Las Vegas
6 Jane's Addiction – Been Caught Stealing
7 The Sisters Of Mercy – More
8 Sinead O'Connor – Mandinka

Bee OK, Monday, 30 December 2024 02:24 (five months ago)

"I only went with your mother because she's dirty"

World Premiere won out but "Mandinka" might be the best song or is it "Like A Daydream?"

Bee OK, Monday, 30 December 2024 02:48 (five months ago)

Why the hell is “Radio Free Europe”’in there?

It maybe got some renewed circulation after Eponymous came out. But also 120 Minutes threw in the odd classic from the vaults.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 December 2024 04:42 (five months ago)

John Wesley Harding seems to have been on a lot during this period. I don't recall him being featured or that successful in the UK at the time but was just starting to read the music press.

Mother Universe is an under rated track.

Treblekicker, Monday, 30 December 2024 10:17 (five months ago)

MTV’S 120 minutes 1990

John Wesley Harding was one of those guys I saw mentioned in RS and SPIN often between 1990 and 1991 without ever hearing a note on my college station.

The Whimsical Muse (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 6 January 2025 01:52 (four months ago)

did not give a fig for the mondays at the time but kinky afro is just a stone classic to me now. jane's addiction is, y'know, corny, but "been caught stealing" I had & have to give them props for. I think my 5'd be

1. kinky afro
2. been caught stealing
3. tragedy for you
4. madonna of the wasps
5. disappearer

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 6 January 2025 02:32 (four months ago)

Do we acknowledge that Been Caught Stealin’ led to the success of Who Let the Dogs Out?

sarahell, Monday, 6 January 2025 03:15 (four months ago)

I'll be true to 1990 me and vote for "Been Caught Stealing".

Was the JW Harding a Roky Erikson cover from that tribute album that came out around then?
Yeah, I think so---he was riding Roky's coattails, but did it well enough, and was great to hear a Roky song on MTV (don't recall anything else on there from the trib, although it was mostly pretty good, w ZZ Top etc.) JWH AKA Wesley Stace, who deftly detailed an admiring, amusing (and amused) review of Robbie Robertson's epic autobio, Testimony, with intriguing mention of early days, spent in shady urban shadows (father's turf), and out on the Rez, running with cousins (on his mother's side). But apparently it's mostly about how he taught Bob Dylan so very much, incl. how to dress. Review is pasted in full over on The Band thread, from before WSJ improved their firewall.
Don't trust my memory to fairly pick one of these, will go back and listen some more.

dow, Monday, 6 January 2025 20:59 (four months ago)

The only thing I ever remember hearing by John Wesley Harding was his acoustic version of "Like a Prayer," which was exactly as you'd expect and fine as far as such things go.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 6 January 2025 21:49 (four months ago)

Running out of time, going w "Radio Free Europe," a ringer in more ways than one---gotta give it up for the drummer again.
