so, yesterday i gave lee rockey's "music" LP a spin: https://i.discogs.com/1nynurbzgPNrGAkWVhYmXw7ttPH6Z-Z2sR3E-Z6EEY4/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:398/w:398/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTkxOTY5/NC0xMTcyODU2MjU5/LmpwZWc.jpeg which is luminous gloopy free improv, like a less droney, more effervescent taj mahal travellers, or a bucolic corsano/yeh thing.
this morning i am jamming TOAH DYNAMIC's "movement" LP cos i need more half-assed shambling DIY folk hip-hop in my life https://i.discogs.com/kWmezfS1KGKCZdyTwq4nR0Xv8wVEnF4tWoweYAhgsAo/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:550/w:550/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTIzNTM1/My0xMjg4MDE3NzQ5/LmpwZWc.jpeg

I was wondering if I needed to start this thread since i had for the last couple of years i think. So glad somebody did.

Stevo, Tuesday, 7 January 2025 02:19 (five months ago)

So, stacks of that hard rock stoner stuff from the turn of the 70s. A bit of reggae including Dadamah , Dennis Bovell's 4th Street Orchestra, some electric blues. Santana. Hendrix etc.
Some titles I got from a rermegacorp £5 sale.
W
Might be more specific when i get up.

Stevo, Tuesday, 7 January 2025 07:08 (five months ago)

Dadawah is the reggae guy, Dadamah were a post-punk experimental band. I have cos by both within a couple of feet of here.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/15e23f37bec5feb713892597e63cbb22/2618034ooky Tooth's first lp. Showing the influence of Vanilla Fudge, blues, soul etc.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/a7d7a067824b8831c0e712875de94969/1212354
Angular avant-prog from the Rermegacorp buy.sounded interesting in their description. I think I may have previous lp Hen's Teeth somewhere too.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/a2a25694571c37d784924c5c2eacae1c/1238224
fusion era Latin jazz stuff live in Japan. Very electric

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/4a8d57131949e51e6ff1fd56247d34a6/1893894
1st lp by California desert rock band. I read that one of the first lps that guitarist Josh Homme bought was Iggy & The Stooges' Raw Power which confirms, or slightly alters what I'd taken to be an audible influence. I think I would have plunked for the earlier lp Fun House being in there though but Raw Power remains one of Homme's fav lps.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/122b76971d72486af562a4fe90d58873/8164217
fvrom 1972 by inflouential electric blues guitarist. I'm hearing a lot more organ than the horns listed on the sleeve. Pretty good set though.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/ce8a9b08aebaf3ec337446fdd425f8c7/4706453
recent Dr Bird reissue of this set which has the version of the Peace and Love image shown here as the sole cover era. This image is based on a photo that was the cover of the original lp release.
Have mainly listened to that set which is loose music heavily based in the Nyabinghi drumming.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/0b88f6a8ffb11e4d3cb0b2974b78785c/8640070
2020 pairing of the heavy folk influenced studio lp and the legal bootleg lp taken from recordings from the tour supporting it.
Hadn't listened to the studio lp in an age and it is deeply intense. I was at some of the Uk dates that Feel Good Now the live lp was recorded at. I think it still stands up.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/45405c9d8362e66584274e249bcfd876/10117031
Detroit heavy stoner rock stuff. One of the archetypal reductio ad absurdum heavy rock lps of the time. Their live lp may be even more mindnumbing dunt in a good way but the first 2 studio lps are very recommended for this.
The 90s band Gorilla recreated the cover for one of their own releases. Showing conscious influence being picked up.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/6803d344010901dc1cd3495ef8cfc5d8/11699666
Boston based young psychedelic band from the late 60s. I refound this recently and am not sure why I've left such an interval since previous listening.

I may add some more later.

Self-titled debut and only album from Illinois jammy, bluesy rockers Farm. One of those private press records that actually lives up to the hype, imo.

Don't think I've ever listened to this one before - quite an unusual line -up - alto sax, bass, drums and two guitars. veers into slightly vaporous Garbarek territory at times, but funky Charlie Haden (beautifully present in the mix) keeps things kicking.

recent Cherry Red release of first 2 lps by dream pop artist. I've wanted a physical copy of the pair of these for a while. I did have the old cd of the 2nd lp and used to have the 1st on vinyl after getting it for Xmas the year it came out.
So breathy vocals over 50s pop derived backing. I think it still stands up quite well

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/fe93f98f757610c0d5b9ce5732cba216/10172642
8 disc box set by archetypal stoner hard rock band put together by the ex-rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge.
They had initially hoped to link up with the front section of the Jeff Beck Band i.e. Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart. I'm not sure if Stewart had ever been on board with this idea, he wound up joining the then frontman-less Small Faces alongside the JBG bassist who switched back to guitar which he'd played with The Birds and The Creation earlier. That was one Ronnie Wood as I'm sure you know. Jeff Beck wound up in a nasty car crash which took him a year to get over. He would later pair up with the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice a couple of years later.
So this pair of New York musician who were looking to get into a heavier, bluesier sound though they had no real grounding in the blues and often didn't recognise blues standards being sung in their dressing room as such. They recruited 2 performers who had been involved in the Detroit scene, Jim McCarty who had played with the Detroit Wheels, Mitch Ryder's backing band. His guitar becomes more prominent on the 2nd Mitch Ryder lp Breakout and smoulders and burns across Cactus' material. Frontman chosen was Rusty Day who had been in Amboy Dukes the Ted Nugent featuring band.He seems to have been much more of a blues enthusiast than the rhythm section.
So there's 3 studio lps by this lineup plus most of 2 2cd live sets that had been released by Rhino Handmade in the 00ioes. These are pretty great and feature the band stretching out pretty effectively.
There is also a 4th mainly studio lp and 4 live tracks by a band that reshuffled after Jim McCarty walked out and the label got rid of Rusty Day. This material features the vocals of Peter French who some of you know as the frontman of Leafhound. Guitar gets taken over by Werner Fritzschings who I don't think was well known beforehand and his brother Duane Hitchings came in on keyboards.
What I've heard so far has been pretty archetypal for this type of sound. Heavy guitar driven rock of this era.

Anywa, another pretty good set on Dr Bird.

binging on Yan Jun over the last few days.
https://f4.bcbits.com/img/0013384022_10.jpg

This release by Tea Rockers is a clear favorite. They are/were an improvisational group who drink tea to influence the outcome of the music they play. On this album they were a quartet of cello, electronics and traditional Chinese instruments.
The packaging looks very lavish and his notes are characteristically witty, for example:

Special thanks to our friend Lasse Marhaug in Oslo who helped us with mixing and mastering. He is perhaps one the most serious tea drinkers in the entire European Noise scene.

also great:

Pharoah Sanders Izipho Zam
1969 recording by large group including Sonny Sharrock being pretty tuneful on a couple of tracks and Howard Johnson on tuba.
Prince of Peace is pretty good but may be better in its later reworking as Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum Allah but the other 2 tracks are otherworldly.Do you need special insurance if you suspect the band in your studio may be about to levitate the studio?
Must be bad for the wiring like. But yet Sanders managed to record severalclassic spiritual jazz lps throughout the early 70s where he does just that.
& this is a great example, recently reissued. I saw that the disc was reviewed in one of this month's monthly music magazines.
LP was released 4 years after recording. But glad it did see the light of day.
I could do with getting a list of communal jam records with a somewhat similar feeling. I thiunk a number came out around the same time in various sub genres.
Also need to make further note of Sonny Sharrock here who seems to chime more than skronk. Which surprised me for him at this time, I thought distortion was like his middle name. But here he does seem to be a tuneful but intense part of a group improvisation where the rest of the group seems to be skronking.

Los Jaivas [La ventana]
1972 2nd lp by Chilean folk/impro band who I somehow hadn't been fully aware of until I read the review of their RSD reissue of Alturas de Machu Pichu their more proggy 1981 lp in Uncut last month. They apparently started out as more of a garagey beat band incorporated some jamming then started exploring indigenous folk influences which you can hear on their 1st 2 s/t lps before becoming gradually more proggy.while still exploring that folk influence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzdc0C9p9h4
is one of the tracks from this lp

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTKpf7YR3Mo
is a short film from around the same time that has therm sounding a lot more electric on the soundtrack

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy7l3GnzxK8
is some tv footage in pretty rough state that catches them jamming

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AO8pY09h_Y
is a 10 minute clip from the longer film of them live in Machu Picchu in 1981.

They can sound like a more acoustic Can in places but generally seem pretty interesting, not jive-ass at all.

Can Live in Paris 1973
Intensely psychedelic group improvisation by 5 piece band with Damo Suzuki still on vocals. The earliest hopefully yet of the live series , still hoping though I think I have heard they're not going earlier which is a major shame. Would have loved an official release of the Wahldbuhne 1972 set which I love. & sets from the previous couple of years would be as welcome.
This is intensely vital.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/28af3b9cb0cb1b41bc19b1c276114f31/2496546
ZZ Top Tres Hombres
I think this is their best lp and about their heaviest though they keep the track lengths jukebox pop short though they stretched things out live . Billy Gibbons shows why he was one of Jimi Hendrix's most promising guitarists in several places.
I think this era is much better than the later, more popular stuff.But I do love the hard rock from the era anyway. & this should be seen as archetypal, though could do with the songs being a little longer.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/s/0b3a13798c7833ba38d78bbd3a53422e/6063672
Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Echos Hypnotiques: From the Vaults of Albarika Store 1969-1979
the 2nd compilation Analog Africa put out of Benin Afro-funk band's material. I thought it was long gone and I'd missed it then saw it in a Dublin record shop last weekend.
Intense hypnotic funk workouts I think they're a pretty essential band.

Steely Dan Pretzel Logic
1974v 3rd lp by LA cynics I think still recorded when they were a band and not just 2 vocalists/songwriters plus session men.
I had this years ago, probably closer to the 1999 reissue but haven't seen it around in ages and I'm only finding an empty case at home.
This still works well as jazz-tinged rock with great bluesy guitar. It reminded me heavily of a local band I really enjoy the Leon Stax Equation a psychedelic soul/funk 7 piece who seem to be trying to sonically recreate a mythical 1974 whose sound I've tried to dissect.
Anyway, this is a great lp that I should have kept a copy of around. Jazzy ironic songs with great guitar and a Duke Ellington cover . I'd love to hear more rock bands cover Ellington he had some great riffs.

The Leon Stax Equation – Coloured In Full
the local band I just mentioned. Quite a good lp though they may be even better live. Bright somewhat psychedelic mix of rock, soul, funk etc and to my ears quite good recreation of a mythic 1974.
I just saw them last night in a bar where their stage area seemed too small for the 6 players who performed last night. ?That and several people dancing in very limited space.
Anyway I'd recommend seeing them if you get the chance.
