technically out in the tail end of 2024, but despair is a heaven by the sewerheads is like mildly gothy post-punk with violin, like a less intense birthday party/iceage. the singer/guitarist is also in the gotobeds. i don't love every track but when it hits (e.g. "trick of the rain") it's great.

Population II definitely rocks, looking forward to the new one. First single is promising:

Saw them open for Osees awhile back, they were fantastic.

"tracing the sand by the pool" by the lavender flu continues their hot run of sic alps/early ohsees-esque garage-punk-psych. sorry for the spotify link but it doesn't seem to be on bandcamp. i love this album.

speaking of Portland bands ^^ the new Gaytheist does indeed rock:

Honestly, could probably see fans of, say, Pissed Jeans finding stuff to like in the new Mantar record:

really into the water margin album: https://water-margin.bandcamp.com/album/gleaming-cursed. some really nice two-guitar interplay, reminds me a bit of q and not u or at least that era of DC post-punk

co-sign water margin. some drive like jehu in the dna too

― na (NA), Monday, 19 May 2025 19:29 (six months ago)
oh wow didn't know they had a new one. love that band. Pittsburgh dudes. thanks.
― gman59, Monday, 19 May 2025 20:42 (six months ago)
yeah they’re not on sub pop anymore so it’s not getting promoted as heavily. still good though, love their commitment to trashiness

This song is on my label. The album comes out July 11.

Bill Orcutt, Steve Shelley and Ethan Miller have a new trio, and yeah, this rocks. RIYL Earthless, early Grand Funk Railroad, Neil Young & Crazy Horse:

Thanks for the tip on that one, instant pre-order.
As for other music that rocks in 2025, CIVIC have a new album out and it's great.

Yeah, that Civic album is really something. Only Australia seems to produce bands that sound like that, but when they get it right it's the only thing I want to hear.

Not for me, that one. Way too choog

Fun to hear Orcutt ripping it over Miller/Shelley choogle, but I think he generally works best with a freer drummer, i.e. Corsano or Idris Hoyos. Is Miller playing bass on all the cuts? It would be cool to hear some duelling guitars like he and Chasny did in Comets on Fire.

the opening chord progression of the orcutt/shelley/miller single is naggingly familiar. i know it's a basic descending chord structure but what does it sound like? is it an older radiohead song?
― na (NA), Wednesday, 25 June 2025 12:54 (five months ago)
Haha, I know what you mean. There's a song on The Bends that does something similar. But it is a common structure, so I can put any thoughts of Radiohead's whiny nonsense aside.
― Composition 40b (Stew), Wednesday, 25 June 2025 13:56 (five months ago)
yea it sounds like “my iron lung” but also “you’re all i need to get by” and a dozen other things
― gestures broadly at...everything (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 25 June 2025 14:16 (five months ago)
Is Miller playing bass on all the cuts?
Yeah, it's a live album. Only about a half hour long, too.

I thought this thread might be about a new Ashlee Simpson album
