out 28 march, here's the single "bologna"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4CsV3b7woM

and the track list & times:

1 The Same Thing as Nothing at All 5:00
2 Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World 4:50
3 The Ignoramus of Love 3:34
4 Dan's Boogie 3:48
5 Bologna 4:24
6 I Materialize 1:19
7 Sun Meet Snow 3:37
8 Cataract Time 8:00
9 Travel Light 2:25

"bologna" is pretty cool, it's like almost his version of a trip hop track? labyrinthitis was really good so i hope this one's just as strong

ufo, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 08:31 (seven months ago)

it's like the seedy underside of kaputt

ufo, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 08:50 (seven months ago)

8 minute runtime saying good things about Cataract Time

H.P, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 09:09 (seven months ago)

i love the bit at 2:10 when it sounds like the reverb-laden trumpet's coming in but the next note reveals it to be just guitar

ufo, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 11:24 (seven months ago)

Don't often have cause to say this, but I love Bologna!

Chris L, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 14:42 (seven months ago)

love this

sean gramophone, Wednesday, 8 January 2025 15:00 (seven months ago)

No wonder I like this...he's not singing on it...

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 8 January 2025 23:05 (seven months ago)

He does sing in it?

But yeah this sounds very promising.

But pretty good still !

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 5 February 2025 08:37 (six months ago)

Much better than bologna

nostormo, Wednesday, 5 February 2025 16:30 (six months ago)

Ooh, this is the best possible title for a Destroyer album

sounds great

intro riff a nod to... coldplay?

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 5 March 2025 07:37 (five months ago)

i don't hear it?

ufo, Wednesday, 5 March 2025 08:25 (five months ago)

sounded like "the scientist" to my ears

corrs unplugged, Wednesday, 5 March 2025 08:49 (five months ago)

Looking forward to this, haven't been into the last few releases but really liking what I'm hearing this go around.

Bee OK, Thursday, 6 March 2025 19:45 (five months ago)

Warming up for this by going back to listen to (almost) everything starting with Streethawk. I haven't revisited it or This Night in maybe...five years? Streethawk is better than I remember and I loved it back in the day. And This Night popped right back up to one of my faves of the century.

These singles have been spectacular. Hard to imagine the rest of the album being as good, but re-listening reminds me to give it a deep dive and multiple listens, which these days doesn't happen nearly as often as it did 20+ years ago.

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Saturday, 8 March 2025 03:13 (five months ago)

How many guys named Jon / John that live in Chicago do we have on ilx ffs

calstars, Saturday, 8 March 2025 03:22 (five months ago)

I think just me, if we're counting Jo(h)ns who actually live in Chicago

jaymc, Saturday, 8 March 2025 04:24 (five months ago)

Why do they all feel the need to say where they live

calstars, Saturday, 8 March 2025 04:31 (five months ago)

why are you such a dick about it

mookieproof, Saturday, 8 March 2025 05:00 (five months ago)

Cataract Time is absolutely lovely in a way I didn’t at all expect

airy vibe to this one

Is what my neighbors say to me almost every day

Chris L, Friday, 28 March 2025 13:11 (four months ago)

Enjoying my first listen to this right now. I guess in a sense it's just more of the same as what we've gotten the last couple of albums, but I find this very enjoyable and I can't think of many bands who have managed to maintain such a high a level of quality over such an extended time period.

silverfish, Friday, 28 March 2025 17:43 (four months ago)

I'm in awe of this record, I like it more than the last few

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 28 March 2025 19:17 (four months ago)

I like the second half much more than the first.

Frederik B, Friday, 28 March 2025 19:24 (four months ago)

Like the Destroyer albums released since 2017, he's made one I'll listen to often the week of release, after which I'll forget it exists.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 March 2025 19:41 (four months ago)

he should do a greatest hits. i'd listen to that.

glum mum (map), Friday, 28 March 2025 19:44 (four months ago)

absolutely!

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 28 March 2025 19:53 (four months ago)

'cataract time' from this one should be on it, drop dead gorgeous song

glum mum (map), Friday, 28 March 2025 20:00 (four months ago)

lots of weird drum shit going on with this album lol

glum mum (map), Friday, 28 March 2025 20:01 (four months ago)

big al stewart vibes on the final track

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 28 March 2025 20:56 (four months ago)

Love this. "Cataract Time" is incredible

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Friday, 28 March 2025 21:35 (four months ago)

it's not as good as labyrinthitis (which is one of his best) but also doesn't fall off completely in the last two tracks like that did. it's probably closest in feel to poison season, surprisingly?

there's a lot of ideas here that i wish he'd explored more - the almost trip-hop vibes of "bologna", the grand synthetic soul orchestration of "the same thing as nothing at all" and "dan's boogie"

"sun meet snow" is pretty crazy

ufo, Friday, 28 March 2025 23:45 (four months ago)

Gave this a listen today, first half in the car and the second half in the shower. Pretty good, looking forward to getting to know it.

Bee OK, Saturday, 29 March 2025 01:24 (four months ago)

just gonna assume you didn't buy this on vinyl

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 29 March 2025 15:26 (four months ago)

Me listening to this new album while running errands:

- there’s too much reverb on this
- the jokes on this one are really, really funny
- kinda tuneless but man, these jokes
- I wonder if Destroyer records should be considered “comedy albums”
- maybe “novelty albums” would be more appropriate
- but maybe all albums are “novelty albums”
- if this is a really good novelty album, and all albums are novelty albums, then this is a really good album

instantly my favorite destroyer album since kaputt

ivy., Thursday, 3 April 2025 16:25 (four months ago)

i don't really find it to be all over the place, feels like a v unified sonic palette he's playing with

great drums

I'm with ivy except it's my favorite since trouble in dreams

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 3 April 2025 16:44 (four months ago)

It's quite unified and has two tracks I'd keep (the opener and "Cataract Time") and I'll consign the rest to research.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 April 2025 17:00 (four months ago)

I love the whole album, though I would add "Hydroplaning" to the list of Alfred's otherwise correct highlights.

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 April 2025 20:10 (four months ago)

it's probably my least favourite since kaputt except for ken, i don't love it anywhere near as much as labyrinthitis. none of it's at all bad, it's just all merely pretty good

ufo, Thursday, 3 April 2025 21:17 (four months ago)

"least favorite since kaputt

I guess I am still capable of being surprised by wildly different takes on artists I like.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 April 2025 22:07 (four months ago)

something like this, from best to worst, with ken being the only one i don't really care for. maybe swap poison season and have we met

kaputt
labyrinthitis
poison season
have we met
dan's boogie
ken

ufo, Thursday, 3 April 2025 22:49 (four months ago)

why are we acting like Kaputt was his debut album? I feel like Kaputt capped off an amazing run and everything since, including Dan's Boogie, has been merely pretty good. Thief, Rubies and Streethawk are great records

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 3 April 2025 22:57 (four months ago)

Another Destroyer album cycle and subsequent armchair career retrospectives and I am once again screaming “Justice for City Of Daughters”. If it can be considered a debut album (it was a debut ‘studio album’) then it’s an all-time best

the yam that I am with my yam (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 3 April 2025 23:10 (four months ago)

kaputt was a big shift and i don't really return to his previous work much except your blues (which i adore) & occasionally rubies. there's good moments across all those albums but they don't have the same appeal overall

ufo, Thursday, 3 April 2025 23:19 (four months ago)

goon tie otm

I think of early Destroyer as its own terrain -- I was on board as of Streethawk and for me the one-two punch of Thief and Streethawk remains very dear to my heart, I think he got even better but the splash of those is for me still very potent

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 3 April 2025 23:35 (four months ago)

Xp your sleeping on streethawk! I remember reading a rym review like a decade ago which argued for the first 5 seconds of that album being the greatest but of recorded music in the 21st century and I'm still sympathetic to that idea.

I wish he sung like he does in Bologna all the time. That song is catnip for me, got all my favourite elements. One night high register piano reverb piano riff. Bongos. Walking bass line. Its a really fun song to sing to your partner too. In another world where it became a smash hit (Melody maker, NME, all sounds like a dream to me), it would be a cracker karaoke hit. Slaps to sing

H.P, Friday, 4 April 2025 00:26 (four months ago)

Fuck lotta bad spell correct in that one sorry

H.P, Friday, 4 April 2025 00:27 (four months ago)

Kaputt is pretty singular and a gorgeous, mellow record, but doesn't have anything like "Painter in Your Pocket", "The Sublimation Hour", "Foam Hands".

I dunno, I'm no big Roxy fan but seem to recall he was p clear Kaputt was his Avalon, and maybe there's a similar before/after logic there

Good songs on all post Kaputt-albums but as with all reunion Suede albums I can't truly enjoy them because of the mix/master, it's too compressed and busy to me - even something airy and spacious like "Cataract Time" isn't nice on the ears when you dial it up

corrs unplugged, Friday, 4 April 2025 09:13 (four months ago)

I honestly need to spend some more time with the pre-Streethawk stuff. I've never really thought about ranking his stuff, but if I absolutely had to it would probably look like this today:

Destroyer's Rubies (first album that got me into Bejar)
Streethawk
Kaputt
Your Blues
Trouble in Dreams
Have We Met
This Night
Labyrinthitis
Poison Season
ken

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 April 2025 17:05 (four months ago)

I think I'm the only weirdo in the world who ranks Kaputt and Poison Season as the twin jewels of the catalog. Vastly different, but both perfect.

You're supposed to go to Heaven, ideally not Las Vegas (bernard snowy), Friday, 4 April 2025 17:12 (four months ago)

I like Kaputt and Rubies the best, but Poison Season is probably my third after those

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 4 April 2025 17:14 (four months ago)

Heh, that list makes it look like I don't like Poison Season or ken, I do both! He's got a really hard catalog to rank and something has to end up on the bottom.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 April 2025 17:15 (four months ago)

Tried ranking his albums but this is all I could come up with:

top tier:
Streethawk
Your Blues
Rubies
Kaputt
Poison Season

second tier:
This Night
Trouble in Dreams
ken
Have We Met
Labyrinthitis
Dans's Boogie (provisional placing)

I also have not listened to pre-Streethawk stuff that much. I really should, but back when I tried (a long time ago now), it always just made me want to listen to Streethawk or This Night.

silverfish, Friday, 4 April 2025 17:33 (four months ago)

What appeals to me personally about City Of Daughters (even more so than Thief) is that it has all the wit and charm one would hope for but it’s still directed more toward “conventional song structures” rather than being fully immersed in the artist’s id.

Another example (for me) is The National’s “Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers”— everything that would define the band is there and in place, but there’s something appealing (to me) about material that was created before the rivers were running deep and certainly conventions started to emerge

Vaguely Threatening CAPTCHAs, Friday, 4 April 2025 20:18 (four months ago)

My favorite since Kaputt too. I liked the singles, but they had me expecting just another pretty good Destroyer album. The songs that really make the album for me are "Same Thing as Nothing at All," the title track, and especially "Sun Meet Snow."
