Best DJ mix, ever. Past OR Future

Tried a brief search for something along these lines but nothing hopped out at me.

For now I will hold to the position that this is the best and greatest. Ever. No diatribe needed, if you know you know.

https://www.discogs.com/release/2227951-Doc-Martin-For-The-People?

What’s singular is that the peak moments imo mostly are crafted around samples of 70s jazz-funk. Leading to almost a full speech by Jessie Jackson? Hmm. It works somehow.

(Couldn’t find any stream or DL links available atm but I can UL to SLSk on request. All good things come to those who wait.)

*Peak jazz-funk samples despite much of the mix being tech house bordering on straight techno. Not sure there’s any Bangalter in there? There’s that one remix I know of…

I don't have a single mix that towers over the rest honestly. Some of my favorites:

I-F - Mixed Up in the Hague Vol 1
Michael Mayer - Fabric 13
Kruder & Dorfmeister - DJ Kicks
Cut Copy - FABRICLIVE.29
Paul Oakenfold - Tranceport
Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure Vol 1

brimstead, Tuesday, 14 January 2025 04:25 (one month ago) link

Viborg, would love if you'd soulseek it--the YT link posted has several songs muted to avoid takedowns.

Off the top of my head, I love:

Andrew Hung / Fuck Buttons – Vessel Guest Mix
Dixon - Live at Robert Johnson, Volume 8
ADULT. - FACT Mix 393
Monk One - Monk's Dream
David Holmes - Essential Mix 98-01
Blackest Ever Black - The Scold's Bridle

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Tuesday, 14 January 2025 05:51 (one month ago) link

There aren't many mixes I love. They have to meander enough to potentially be more than the sum of its parts and be their own thing, but meandering runs the risk of wrong steps that break a spell

3 I often go back to

Niff - Seekers #1 (https://soundcloud.com/seekershome/seekers-series-1-niff)
KRN - Ghostcast #1 (https://soundcloud.com/theghost/ghost-cast-001-krn)
Truly Madly - Deeprave 2 (https://soundcloud.com/truly-madly/deeprave-2)

saer, Tuesday, 14 January 2025 05:56 (one month ago) link

The KRN and Truly Madly mixes are two of my favorites as well.

To those I would add:
Larry Levan - Live @ End Max, Tokyo (1991)
Carsten Jost & Lawrence - Betalounge, Hamburg (10.05.2002)
Cassy - Panorama Bar 01 (2006)

Some that I go back to often:

Dave Clarke presents Electroboogie vol. 2
Monkey Mafia Live at the Heavenly Social
Optimo Presents Psyche Out
Prins Thomas: Cosmo Galactic Prism
Playgroup: DJ Kicks

Seconded on lukas' pick of I-f - Mixed Up In The Hague Vol.1, listening to it now and it's still astonishingly good

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Tuesday, 14 January 2025 13:50 (one month ago) link

Mixed Up in The Hague is my absolute number one, game changer for me.

I’m really proud still of my Crazy Rhythms RVNG4 mix.

Playgroup DJ Kicks was a big one for me as well.

My friend Porkchop (SSPS) had a mix, I think it was called Me and My rhythm Box, that was crazy. I have to see if I still have that.

Mostly there were some deep house page wbmx hit mix five mixes I used to obsess over but I lost them.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 14 January 2025 13:50 (one month ago) link

I'm gonna go to bat for 2ManyDJs Vol.2. It became incredibly popular to bash "mash-ups" as a trend, and to be fair it all got a bit out of hand. But that mix was groundbreaking and such a big influence on me and my music tastes. I think there's an argument to say it's the first album of the 2000s.

the wedding preset (dog latin), Tuesday, 14 January 2025 14:08 (one month ago) link

There are too many to pick just one, and agree with lots of the ones chosen already here.

In recent years and given it's not a very well known mix, I always think this stakes out a really specific sound and territory that nobody else could have covered. Have listened to it more than any other mix of the last number of years, by a long way:

Porkchop mix was actually called "Le Disk Jox Porkchop"

I don't think it's posted anywhere, I'm gonna ask if I can share.

forgot about that one but hung out with him a few times during that era, with both of my primary dropped names of the Rapture and Morgan Geist. I think he had a release where he thanked "the dans of new york" which I think meant me, Dan Balis of Escort and Dan Houghland of Excepter/Other Music but my memory may be completely wrong.

So far everything posted has been from the past, let's hear about some great mixes from the future.

ha.

for me, the one i always go back to whenever i am struggling to find something to listen to, is FSUK3 by BRA.
yeah, it's part of the big beat era, but the spread of styles always makes me grin.

obviously given my current rabbit hole, i am all over the various andy votel mixtapes, and the besst of the bunch for me is his Vertigo mixtape.

off topic but... when do you find the time to listen to these mixes? are you just dancing round the living room for hours? do you listen while working/commuting?

I've put on Eris Drew’s Mystery of the Motherbeat Part 2 a lot, while working, but I don't think I've gotten further than abt 45 mins before being interrupted https://soundcloud.com/eris-drew/eris-drew-mystery-of-the-motherbeat-vol-2-3

This is my most listened to mix

https://soundcloud.com/ostgutton-official/panorama-bar-07-nd_baumecker

Was initially interested in the fact it included St Etienne and Cabaret Voltaire in the track listing, good vibes all the way through.

I just listened to Sasha and Digweed’s Northern Exposure mixes for the first time this past month. Feels like a “last classic album you were knocked out by” entry, for mixes, though I can also see why I waited this long to hear them, having come of age at a time and place when this sound was peak-uncool. Had a similar experience with Coldcut’s 70 Mins of Madness mix a couple years ago, which I always thought was the kind of mid-90s ninja tune instrumental hip hip I don’t care for, but was, well, knocked out by it.

Aside from stuff already noted (mixed up in the hague, m mayer’s fabric, dixon’s live at robert johnson and body language mixes), and speaking only of commercially released CDs, I’d add

Daniel Bell - The Button Down Mind of Daniel Bell + The Button Down Mind Strikes Back
Zip - Superlongevity 2
DJ/rupture - gold teeth thief / unroot
James Murphy and Pat Mahoney - fabric 36

Of more recent-ish things, Fabric mixes by Call Super, Nina Kraviz, and Special Request, and DJ Stingray’s Kern mix (all 2017, feels like a moment when the Mix CD was long obsolete, but people were trying to do interesting things with the format).
Also, the Beats in Space mixes by Josey Rebelle and Powder

one month passes...

crucial thread, thank you. there's others in the archive, but this one is turning into the most concentrated.

maybe a bit more niche, but an alltime classic in its style, paul nice's breaks for days took the rare groove "live looping" tape format and completely leveled it up. his selection of well-known beats right up against still-unnamed records combined with his precision touch makes for one of my alltime favorites. i used to have the cd, but luckily it's made it to bandcamp: https://paulnice.bandcamp.com/album/breaks-for-days

"The Well-Tempered Holophonor by Philip J. Fry" (Austin), Saturday, 22 February 2025 01:43 (yesterday) link

yeah, i love the mix paul nice released on antidote.
one of my favourite hip hop mixtape.
ta for the pointer to his bandcamp.
