Because it's out there, and is loud and weird.

Hailing from the misty grottos and orchards of Western Massachusetts, Stella Kola weave haunting ballads that dig deep into the psychedelic-folk tradition while shapeshifting into captivating new forms. Initially a duo formed in 2019 as a songwriting project between poet/vocalist Beverly Ketch and musician Robert Thomas (founding member of the long running improvisational group Sunburned Hand of the Man), the project steadily swelled to a sextet. The lineup now consists of Ketch on vocals, Thomas on acoustic guitar, Wednesday Knudsen on flute & sax, Jen Gelineau on viola, Jeremy Pisani on guitar & synth and Jim Bliss on bass.
Cosmic Ray will be opening for Stella Kola. Cosmic Ray is a solo project of Shannon Ketch, also of Sunburned Hand of the Man and Animal Piss, It's Everywhere (APIE). Influenced by John Cage's chance operation he creates an electro-acoustic landscape incorporating synthesizer and field samples.

i definitely want to put on some shows this year. the venue next door has a basement bar space that they never use and i'm thinking me and maria on the decks and some noise/psych action from all the talent nearby is just what the doctor ordered.

so excited! my pal willie lane has a new album out and he's coming by tomorrow to drop some off at the store. here's what my pal sunburned rob wrote about it:
https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXYXVagTEw-0f15XLM9Y9aTkdH-erXPVmTHuj4lRaVE3UC3IcfoLi9G3tPSvvfxVCx3KHK49ca_AqvEaztO63_A5d1GX_SzJzyDSOwzspAUtVFYIeDt8ZlgWTe-TDHUvFtWHE6vw9qLUha1IVr0xos2WcXCDXd9b8cSpoSu9c3EX9b79i_hzaMrApnDkm5/s2626/BOBCAT%20TURNAROUND%20blog%20cover%20pic.jpg
I'm honored to have played some bass on the astounding new Willie Lane album "BOBCAT TURNAROUND". I think this is Wille's 5th album & the 4th he's self released on his CORD-ART label. (There was a beautiful duo LP with @pigeonsband on @feedingtuberecords_rozztoxart in 2020 as well). His earlier work was mainly predicated on instrumental fingerpicking & slide adventures & mutations of the Volk/Blues tradition but here Willie debuts vocals & lyrics upon nearly conventional song structures. For me, the songs evoke a specific aspect of the SF 60's scene -Moby Grape, Skip Spence, Kak, Blue Cheer circa "Oh! Pleasant Hope". It's also very complimentary to the fantastic new archival release of obscure bay area band Weird Herald that @guerssen is coincidentally releasing almost simultaneously. Besides a bit of my bass & drums from Ryan Jewell on 2 tracks, everything else is a big stack of Willie's guitars, voices, bass & drums writhing in uncanny layers of bleary beauty. His vocals evoke an unlikely but uber-charming hybrid of Syd Barrett & J. Mascis to my ears & serve to steer the ship throughout. Much of this could easily pass for some fab lost acetate from '72 that Nigel Cross would release on Shagrat or a truly dazed anomaly from SST circa '87. (This is a long way of saying that this will appeal to the beardiest of record collectors). The glorious paste on sleeve art will cast a spell on you as the album slowly unfolds from the speakers. This one sounds somewhat "normal" at first but subtly shape shifts into an ultra drifted zone.. it's like realizing the mimosa you've been nursing was laced with something & now the stars are tap dancing in the sky, but i digress. Act fast, limited to 350 numbered copies - available from the man himself via the CORD-ART blogspot, Bandcamp & a few enlightened U.S. shops.
