reimagining creed as hot beefcake house is genius. tori as crystal waters though....

I wish I had known about that Creed remix when I interviewed Scott Stapp last year.

yes indeed. that one is pretty bad. jesus, is there a 90s "spoonman" remix...*shudder*.

scott seward, Sunday, 19 January 2025 03:31 (one month ago) link

there are a lot of industrial styled bands that did the dance remix thing which i am sure scott knows far more about than me.
for a proper rock band dipping into 90s remix culture, the extra disc that came with Album Of The Year had some cracking time stamped versions eg trip hop, big beat, and even d-n-b

iirc there is some terrible Bowie remix of "Sound And Vision" like this as well

The Queen remix reminded me of the existence of the Small Soldiers soundtrack which was full of questionable remixes of Classic Rock tunes:

The Rick Rubin Queen remix is one of the greatest things ever, and miles better than any actual Queen song.

i love the queen remix. i have it on CD AND vinyl.

every faith no more song should sound like that dillinja mix because then faith no more would sound nothing like faith no more. works for me!

scott seward, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:37 (one month ago) link

that really is the working principle here isn't it, obliterate all traces of the rock band that once existed in the mix

well i don't know about that. you can still hear the stones in that stones remix i posted. for me it was more like: WHO would ever want to listen to that stones remix? not a stones fan. not a dance music fan. its puzzling.

scott seward, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:39 (one month ago) link

ok that makes sense! I'm sure I know more of these, they were ubiquitous at the time.

sleeve, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:40 (one month ago) link

the ones that work best for me are the ones that take the rock vocal and then change everything else. that creed one works that way. the worst ones tend to be the ones that are just the original song with a big beat drum break underneath.

that junkie xl/elvis one is the only one i can remember being an actual hit. though that was a big past the 90s. i'm sure there were other hits like it overseas because lol eurodance fans they corny.

scott seward, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:45 (one month ago) link

I'm gonna interpret the thread remit narrowly/perversely and nominate the Skunk Anansie remix of Bjork's "Army of Me".

Tim F, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:45 (one month ago) link

i mean there have always been loads of bootlegs that just use the vocals going back to the 80s. i mentioned on some thread that i have a really good alanis bootleg dance 12-inch. its good! i had a pretty good trance-y pearl jam one. but its more fun to come across totally horrible major label ones. (obviously dance music people are smart enough to make any old song sound sorta cool in a bootleg beat way.)

scott seward, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:48 (one month ago) link

scott seward, Thursday, 23 January 2025 22:49 (one month ago) link

i mean the more unlikely that a band/artist would even HAVE remixes the better.

Carcass was hired to remix Björk's "Isobel" but instead just recorded their own instrumental version and dropped her vocal in.

The Goldie remix of Bush is surprisingly (unsurprisingly?) good. See also his "Completely Trashed" remix of Garbage's "Milk". Those plus his remix of "Isobel" are all better than 90% of Saturnz Return.

I feel I could post a thousand things to this thread (it's so my thing), which is why I'm reluctant to post anything, but I do want to say in response to the OP, my fav 90s Stones remix is Armand van Helden doing Anybody Seen My Baby. Trojan horsely getting Stones fans to buy 11 minutes of patient speed garage a la Professional Widow/Spin Spin Sugar with a bendy Brown Paper Bag lead, now that's the stuff. Tho ofc the parent album itself has a track with subbass on, so. My fac Stones remix full stop is from the 80s though (Arthur Baker's dub of Too Much Blood)

The WTF peak of the whole dance remixes of rock tracks on singles glut, at least in Britain, has to coincide with that particular period of the CD1/CD2 phenomenon when the CD2 disc would be lead by a remix that sounds nothing like the original. This was fine enough in dance music already (see for instance the Chems' Life Is Sweet), but take for instance U2's Last Night on Earth. The CD2 of that - which doesn't include the original version(s) anywhere - instead gives you this...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYbblVmxQ_Q

...which, well I can imagine there must have been a handful of people hearing the single on the radio, going out and innocently buying the CD2 single rather than CD1 and feeling thoroughly ripped off. Forget Spaceman! U2 aren't even on it!*

(*this approach is never a problem for me if the remix is strong ofc. I love the E Smoove mix of PSB's Liberation that their fans love to complain about).

Was there any artistic metric to those "send them an entirely unrelated track" or those 90s remixes, or was it just all just a heap of wank

thanks, white horse, nice food for thought! i like those stones 80s remixes too especially the too much blood one. there was some good stuff there. i like springsteen remixes too from that time. U2 in the 90s definitely has some weird moments. good ones too! but i'm sure ilm is all over that on some U2 thread.

I bought Deconstructed in a charity shop last year tho I've not heard it yet apart from that Tricky remix of In a Lonely Place that sounds like something off Ambient 4 Isolationism. Fun to imagine Bush opting for Albini purism one minute and then shock horror remixing their work with the discophobic man the next!

great thread idea. wow this Moby "Dusty" remix stinks. the original has wayyy more actual groove!

i have no evidence, but i imagine one use case for these things would be movie soundtracks where the filmmakers want to depict a nightclub or rave, but either they or the studio's parent corporation wants a recognizable rock-radio voice keeping the audience locked in. the only example i can think of is the use of the big-beat "Dragula" remix in The Matrix though.

re: actual chart hits --- that "Professional Widow" remix was a significant worldwide peeformer, getting to the top 20 in several countries and #1 on the U.K. charts! apparently it also topped the US Dance chart which is more of a head-scratcher - you'd think it'd have a LITTLE more of an afterlife here.

apparently she repeated that latter feat with "Jackie's Strength" and "Flavor" as well. in terms of sheer commercial success, you could make the argument that Tori Amos is an intermittently successful dance remix artist, also known for her long-running side project producing singer-songwriter albums which provide the raw material. it's gotta be big!

Doctor Casino, Friday, 7 February 2025 12:36 (two weeks ago) link

that Phil Collins one is okay as an instrumental dance track... good use of the horns... but the vocals really feel like thick plastic decals stuck onto the rhythm track.
