Not necessarily my answer if I took the time to (re)listen to everything, but my impulse is to go with “Love Makes a Woman.”

I went with Aretha, but that James Carr record is so good. I feel a little bad because it's one of his very best and "(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" isn't even the best song on Lady Soul (barely in the top five on that album alone) but that's just a testament to how great those Atlantic Recordings were from Aretha.

I may go for Martha & the Vandellas here. I have a soft spot for "I'm Blue" by the Ikettes but it does sound a bit poky next to the tracks from 7 or 8 years later. "You're No Good" is nice but I prefer Dee Dee Warwick's earlier version.

Love Martha Reeves, Soloman Burke, and Aretha Franklin.

Barbara Acklin and Bettye Swann are now added to my playlists,

but I voted the Ikettes. I never tire of that song. I'm not smart enough to articulate the connection, but it puts me in the same raw rhythmic trance that some ESG or The GO! Team songs do.

I know what you mean. I have that Ikettes 45 and it just has an infectious bassy thump to it.

There are some great live versions of Memphis Soul Stew so giving that a vote.

I had a 60's comp with "Rescue Me" on it and it was one of the very few tracks that totally didn't click for me, until one night I was watching music videos and there was some remix that just exploded into joy when the original song came in, a huge favourite for me ever since.

Didn't realize this was different than the other poll in this series.

1. Knight Bros. – "Temptation 'Bout To Get Me"
2. Dobie Gray – "The 'In' Crowd"
3. Barbara Acklin – "Love Makes A Woman"
4. Ikettes – "I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song)"

I think the Ikettes were in the original Hairspray.

“Make Me Yours” makes me swoon, so that.

Finally went with "7 Rooms". The Motown curation on this disc in particular is exquisite.

"7 Rooms" pushed on the finish line for me partially due to memories of this guy climbing onstage at the local Soul Dance Parties and miming the lyrics along with choreographed dance moves every time it was played.

Also because the goofy-ass promo film:
