"It is finished. Will anyone be interested though?"

In addition to contributing my favourite singles of 2002 to the ILX end of year poll, I have made an 80 minute mix of these tracks, beatmatched and all. It's currently only available from me on s*ls*k ("siegbrans_2002_yearmix.mp3"), I'll try to arrange some real server space tomorrow if any people are interested.

As for the tracklist, I'll post it later. But obviously the usual suspects (Cosmos, Shakedown, Push, Tok Tok, Felix/LRD, Miss Kittin, The Streets/Royksopp) are included.

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 7 December 2002 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, interested! if you can find a server that'd be great.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 7 December 2002 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm now transferring it to this location, It's at 30% now, with ETA in about one hour (01:30 UTC).

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 7 December 2002 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and play @ high volume or on headphones for best results...

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 7 December 2002 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

nice!!

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 7 December 2002 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

siegbran is the coolest!

tracklisting?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 7 December 2002 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

no it looks upright to me

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 7 December 2002 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are Push and Tok Tok?

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 7 December 2002 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hehe, cool, I want it but my connection speed is slow, I'll have someone else download it for me.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 December 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

are you on slsk ronan?

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 7 December 2002 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I still can't get it to work, it keeps saying I don't have enough memory and then the screen starts flicking and things close all by themselves.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 7 December 2002 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice job, Siegbran. This mix has been the perfect soundtrack to my Saturday morning. Looking forward to the tracklisting.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 7 December 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the mix. this is strange: in winamp, the sample frequency is bouncing constantly around, 96, 112, 128, 160, 192 round and round. and in the id tag it says 125kbps

ron (ron), Saturday, 7 December 2002 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ron i think you're seeing "Variable Bit-Rate" in action, where the file's only as hi-quality as it has to be given what's happening sonically at the mo

this is excellent siebran, nice one

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 7 December 2002 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i am downloading this now so will comment in about an hour and a half, i guess... sound ace though.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 7 December 2002 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

so that's what vbr means thanks tracer!

ron (ron), Saturday, 7 December 2002 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking itunes says it's too long to fit on an 80min cd! i hate macs!

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

like the first track a lot

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 7 December 2002 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking itunes says it's too long to fit on an 80min cd! i hate macs!

yeah, it comes up as 80:01 on my iMac. Must. Get. iPod.

brilliant, though -- thx, siegbran!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

*itunes* -- I don't even have an imac! grr. (most unecessary post edit...ever!)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(siegbran how long are you planning on keeping this up? i might not have a chance to download it until tonight or tomorrow night. [when i have my hamster wheel do all of my big downloads.])

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as it lasts - might be weeks.

Siegbran (eofor), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i did something strange and got the 1st 29 mins on cd, and that's ace. i shd be able to listen to the rest of it in a couple of weeks, i guess...

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 7 December 2002 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(beware that lots of MP3 players are crap at calculating running time, so the times above may not match those on the display of your player!)

The mixing is a bit patchy in places (clashing keys, mostly - pretty much unavoidable with such a 'forced' track selection, but still a shame). I'm quite satisfied with it nonetheless. It's certainly more varied than any mix I've ever done. Watch out when playing it at your office christmas party though, because around the 47 minute mark things get a tad noisy (not to mention the sequence involving a certain not-quite-legal substance).

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 8 December 2002 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Bless yer heart, Siegbran, I'm very much looking forward to this. Currently downloading! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 December 2002 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

thankyou thankyou thankyou Siegbran! Listening now...

Jeff W, Sunday, 8 December 2002 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And a great listen it is! Only had heard a couple of those tracks before and the end result's wonderful. Make more of those! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 December 2002 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Now you must all agree that Cosmos is the greatest 8 minutes of recorded sound. Is that filterheadz remix anything to do with Tomaz Vs Filterheadz?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 8 December 2002 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Great job Siegbran!

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 9 December 2002 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

um, okay Ronan I will admit it's very very good. Also, what Ned said.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Siegbran. Downloading now and look forward to hearing, hope it finishes before i have to leave so i can listen to it tonight.

H (Heruy), Monday, 9 December 2002 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, this is wonderful! Nicely done!

original bgm, Monday, 9 December 2002 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that filterheadz remix anything to do with Tomaz Vs Filterheadz

I think so, I can certainly hear some similarities in sounds and general feel (the steady drive, funky, a bit tribal-ish) in the recent Tomaz/Filterheadz singles and this one. I particularly liked the simplicity of this Subsonik remix, it uses very few elements, but the result is very moody and it succeeds in 'suspending time' on the floors - dancing to this feels like eternity. And it's got that cool funky techno beat underneath, I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff. The big problem with using a track like this is to follow it up right - ideally one would put a similar dark, repetitive tune on afterwards to maintain that timelessness, but here I had to steer the mood quite suddenly in a lighter direction with that blissful, heavenly "bright Ibiza sunshine" Chew-Fu Phat tune. Such a sudden u-turn would never really work on the floor.

like the first track a lot

Nice ear candy, eh? It's one of those tunes that are just so ethereal, shiny and perfect that it feels almost uncomfortable. I can just picture Sasha twiddling knobs for weeks to get that snare sound just right. And I'd like to hear that deep, rumbling bass used more often...

Make more of those! :-)

Well, chances are high I'm going to make a 2003 yearmix...

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

You never know Siegbran, I hear dance music will be over by then ; )

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be a beatmatched dronerock mix then...

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i got the dj sammy import cd and it has like 7 or 8 tracks on there. the humate mix of "boys of summer" is good but the extended version of the original mix is amazing.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

that blissful, heavenly "bright Ibiza sunshine" Chew-Fu Phat tune
ooh yeah, that was the other standout of the songs I hadn't heard before

Jeff W (Jeff W), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Just checked, Filterheadz are the Belgian brothers Bert and Maarten Wilmaers, and indeed also do productions with Tomaz, ZZino and Sinesweeper.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 10 December 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

finally fired this up and, it's terrific! hmmm, off to browse your files on soulseek!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what did you use to make it? vinyl? mp3? wav? if so, what software?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and Another thing, I want a better bitrate version of this too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

what did you use to make it? vinyl? mp3? wav? if so, what software?

The sources were vinyl, CD and MP3. Doing the mix in realtime would've meant setting up dual decks, dual CD players, an MP3 program like PCDJ or Traktor, and a mixing board to match - that was way too much hassle and beyond my mixing abilities anyway, so I recorded the vinyl and ripped the CD tracks to WAV, and did everything as a non-realtime mix in Mixmeister (I'm using an older version, v1.01). While this great piece of software can do automated mixing, I've done the transitions largely "by hand". Rendered the result to WAV and encoded it with LAME 1.92 to MP3 (set to VBR, average bitrate 128 kbps).

and Another thing, I want a better bitrate version of this too!

Does it sound so bad then? I'll see if I can put up a 192 kbps version on s*ls*k, but that'll be 100+ MB without dramatic improvements in quality.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that hard to use Siegbran? I'd been meaning to ask where there were good non realtime mixing programmes?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the easiest mixing program I've ever seen. It isn't that good for realtime mixing (Traktor has little competition in that field, I think), but it's tailor made for non-realtime mixing. Because the basics are so easy, you only need to worry about fine tuning, and that makes the creation a whole lot more fun.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna have some fun with this!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah Siegbran, thanks for the tip, I will definitely look into this (I tried PCDJ red and it was a pain in the ass). I've been meaning to make a "best of micro-house" mix, among other things (UK Garage heyday instrumentals, Timbaland @45rpm, etc).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 11 December 2002 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Curse you Siegbran now I have to revise *my* end-of-year lists! Nice one.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 December 2002 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, what songs were responsible?

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

do you not think much of ACID Pro then Siegbran?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, i've been doing mix compilations in ACID for the last year but wondering if what you're using is better somehow...or what else is good for such things other than ACID - not that i really use that program to the full anyway

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 12 December 2002 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Acid isn't worse than Mixmeister - actually, you can do a whole lot more with Acid, especially with its looping and filtering functions, I used to use it for producing/remixing tracks rather than making mix cd's. The unique thing about Mixmeister is that it allows you to do a decent mix *fast*.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 12 December 2002 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm kinda getting the hang of it, shame I've no real filler tracks though, it's just massive tune into massive tune.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 December 2002 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll check out Mixmeister then fanks...if its as good as its name then all bodes well

sod filler Ronan, killer tune after killer tune is the best way - The Avalanches and Soulwax mixes for example

stevem (blueski), Friday, 13 December 2002 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah at the moment it's Par-T-One I'm So Crazy (Medicine 8 Mix) into Junior Jack Vs Thick Dick-Thrill My Animal into Medicine 8-Rock Music

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 13 December 2002 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

doood siegbran this is offff the chain. 40 min to 50 min is evil

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Saturday, 14 December 2002 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got the mix off of someone. This is an awesome yearmix! :) I'm sharing it on s*l*s*k, with the same screenname, as long as need be. Siegbran uplifting!

Tonnager, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually quite curious to know if the people who downloaded the mix actually liked that gabber/hardcore Lady Dana section at 47m, or quickly fastforward these two minutes.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the 47m section--it's a nice change, well-placed, and not too long. And now I know what gabber sounds like.

Thanks for the mix, Siegbran.

dan (dan), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I lost it there for a few minutes, but I rarely listen to that stuff, so it was intriguing. Still, as a mixed-together ILM survey document, it's terrific stuff.

also, I've been messing about with mixmeister (vers 3.x), but it seems to get a lot of the beats wrong. is there a way to manually say, hey mixmeister, you're a beat off (no pun intended).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

rightclick on the bottom of the sprocket (that square thingy with the 8 measures), uncheck the "snap to beat" option, and presto: slide it anywhere you want.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(that's the way my version 1.01 works BTW, I don't know about 3.x)

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

thx, will try it when I get home.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 December 2002 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
working on anything new, siegbran? are you still even hanging around this place?

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 2 October 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaaaaah, I remember this mix! It was likt my introduction to ILM!
