"Windy" with no hesitation. wouldn't call it bubble though. Ruthann used to send me such nice e-mails! back before her album got reissued and she ended up getting more hipster kisses. she deserved it.

scott seward, Sunday, 9 February 2025 18:13 (four months ago)

yeah a lot of these are bubble-adjacent at best

sleeve, Sunday, 9 February 2025 18:16 (four months ago)

i wish that horrible pro-date rape lou christie song would stop showing up on these comps. i had the 45 when i was a little kid and it kinda terrified me but it WAS infernally catchy.

scott seward, Sunday, 9 February 2025 18:16 (four months ago)

"Windy" is really a beautiful record.

timellison, Sunday, 9 February 2025 18:18 (four months ago)

the big discoveries for me here were "Jam Up Jelly Tight" and "Takin' A Ride", both of which I must have missed on AM radio in the 70's

sleeve, Sunday, 9 February 2025 18:31 (four months ago)

Daydream Believer

cryptosicko, Sunday, 9 February 2025 19:07 (four months ago)

So call it pre-bubblegum and bubblegum. It's all-hits and pretty comprehensive for a budget comp. No Partridge Family, but it's nice to have both Bobby Sherman hits, and no "Tie A Yellow Ribbon."

I've really come to love Crazy Elephant over the years, so probably that.

Hideous Lump, Sunday, 9 February 2025 20:38 (four months ago)

I've heard half of these. I assume the other half are just as wretched.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Sunday, 9 February 2025 20:41 (four months ago)

A million times better than the Fun Rock LP--like/love half of these.

1. Tommy Roe - Dizzy
2. Bobby Sherman - Little Woman
3. Turtles - Happy Together
4. Foundations - Baby Now That You've Found Me
5. Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine
6. Flying Machine - Smile A Little Smile For Me
7. Ohio Express - Yummy, Yummy, Yummy

The only actual bubblegum there is 1, 2, and 7--maybe the Lemon Pipers, too. The Monkees, Shondells, and Association all have better songs. MIA: Edison Lighthouse, Andy Kim.

clemenza, Sunday, 9 February 2025 21:00 (four months ago)

i like all the ohio express albums. some awesome garage/psych moments on those. same with those lemon pipers albums. also ohio-born.

scott seward, Sunday, 9 February 2025 21:08 (four months ago)

yeah "through with you" off the 'green tambourine' album is incredible, couple of other great tracks on there too iirc

Clock DVLA (NickB), Sunday, 9 February 2025 21:25 (four months ago)

There's kind of overlap between garage and bubblegum sometimes; I'd place them there.

clemenza, Sunday, 9 February 2025 21:30 (four months ago)

still kinda my fave bubblegum song.

scott seward, Sunday, 9 February 2025 21:42 (four months ago)

Ha--underscoring my post above, I see the Shadows of Knight are on that LP.

clemenza, Sunday, 9 February 2025 23:01 (four months ago)

Brandy, easy. That song has made me cry drunk before.

Cow_Art, Sunday, 9 February 2025 23:39 (four months ago)

I know a Brandy named after the song, hopefully not cursed with her namesake's loneliness.

Four of these I apparently heard on a CD called 25 all-time greatest bubblegum hits, and they're completely unfamiliar to me now. I seem to have a bubblegum-shaped hole in my brain. None of the songs I didn't know by name were familiar, this era of AM junk had largely been buried a few years later when I was growing up.
Since I've voted "Lightnin' Strikes" in the other poll, here it's "Daydream Believer" over the Lemon Pipers.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 10 February 2025 01:12 (three months ago)

Funny that I was buying Big Star records back in the 80s but have yet to hear a Box Tops album (of course I know "The Letter").

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 10 February 2025 01:13 (three months ago)

The only actual bubblegum there is 1, 2, and 7

How are the Ohio Express and 1910 Fruitgum Co. songs not bubblegum?

Glam conspiracist (Dan Peterson), Monday, 10 February 2025 01:38 (three months ago)

1,2, and 7 from the ones I listed.

clemenza, Monday, 10 February 2025 01:43 (three months ago)

Ah, misread. Sorry.

Glam conspiracist (Dan Peterson), Monday, 10 February 2025 14:04 (three months ago)

Wow @ Quick Joey Small. I'd be shocked if the Dirtbombs didn't at least try to cover that at some point.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 10 February 2025 15:05 (three months ago)

Ah well here's the Cramps :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjTfEFwsnZU

Tracer Hand, Monday, 10 February 2025 15:06 (three months ago)

“Quick Joey Small” was my absolute favorite song when it came out. I was 10.

Glam conspiracist (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 12 February 2025 13:18 (three months ago)

I lusted after this album at the time, didn’t actually get one until decades later.

this is the album that made me fall in love with that song:

scott seward, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 14:29 (three months ago)

xp I have that book!

sleeve, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 15:05 (three months ago)

The book is a blast. Never knew it was named after a comp--was it mentioned in the book? I read it decades ago.

cryptosicko, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 15:07 (three months ago)

hmm this one is tough. need to explore the ones i don't know

budo jeru, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 21:54 (three months ago)

hard to go wrong with Archies, Monkees, Tommy James, Ohio Express, Association, or Box Tops tracks though

budo jeru, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 21:57 (three months ago)

I went to a Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth book release party at a bowling alley in L.A. Live music by Sparklejets U.K. Special guest Andy Kim was a no-show.

Hideous Lump, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 21:59 (three months ago)

Andy Kim did a talk at my former workplace, he was the kind of guy who inspires admiration even if you're not sure what for.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 12 February 2025 22:01 (three months ago)

Oh wow, I actually own this album, but completely forgot about it. Since I ended up voting for Lou Christie in the Fun Rock poll will have to decide between Windy, Crazy Elephant (the “hot” mono mix someone posted on YouTube is great) and Indian Giver (which I like as much as prime Paul Revere and the Raiders).

i wish that horrible pro-date rape lou christie song would stop showing up on these comps. i had the 45 when i was a little kid and it kinda terrified me but it WAS infernally catchy.

I used to think it was about that too, but it’s actually just about Lou screwing around on his girlfriend while insisting she remain faithful. Still pretty messed up and doesn’t really fit thematically on these comps. I’m Gonna Make You Mine would be a better match.

The two albums where I learned to love bubblegum:

clemenza, Thursday, 13 February 2025 02:42 (three months ago)

I once bought a 1910 Fruitgum Company album for a quarter.

timellison, Thursday, 13 February 2025 02:57 (three months ago)

Bought the Lemon Pipers album with "Green Tambourine" for about the same price when Toronto's flagship Sam the Record Man had a third floor filled with deletes.

clemenza, Thursday, 13 February 2025 03:01 (three months ago)

"Crazy Elephant (the “hot” mono mix someone posted on YouTube is great)"

The b-side is my fave crazy elephant track. i like it better than anything on the album.

^ amazing tune, love that 45!

budo jeru, Thursday, 13 February 2025 23:32 (three months ago)

enjoying the deep dive here, check out this Tommy Roe song. I think it's the best Tommy Roe song. you can thank me later.

Moon Talk (1967)

budo jeru, Thursday, 13 February 2025 23:34 (three months ago)

BUT i voted for "Windy" because it's just been blowing my mind all day

budo jeru, Thursday, 13 February 2025 23:34 (three months ago)

omg I remember "Moon Talk" now!

Love the winner, although I'm guessing the Turtles set out to make fun of this kind of music ("Eleanor" even more so). They just happened to have a real knack for it.

clemenza, Sunday, 23 February 2025 03:44 (three months ago)

three weeks pass...

Bought this (CD) at a record show yesterday:

As with any anthology, I'm expecting variety, surprises, and artistic growth over time.
