Leaving Here

Great song. First heard it via The Who. Pearl Jam does a good cover too (which I'm guessing they also learned from The Who).

At first glance I’m inclined to go with Big Bird”

“Big Bird”

Flirtations

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 13 February 2025 21:34 (three months ago)

This is loaded with songs that were not big charting hits but are huge for vintage soul fans. I pretty much can’t pick a favorite.

Glam conspiracist (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 13 February 2025 21:54 (three months ago)

Hmm. "(I Know) I'm Losing You"?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 13 February 2025 21:55 (three months ago)

1. Flirtations (should have been in Mad Men!)
2. David Ruffin (could have been in Mad Men)
3. J.J. Jackson (not really Mad Men-like)

Also Don Draper kind of <is> "The Cheater"

Speaking of, the sad, wild end of "The Cheater" singer Walter Scott:

Scott disappeared on December 27, 1983. In April 1987, his body was found floating face-down in a cistern. He had been hog-tied and shot in the chest (Forensic Files and The New Detectives erroneously stated that he was shot in the back). Scott's second wife, JoAnn (née Calcaterra; c. 1944 – May 12, 2019), pleaded guilty to hindering the prosecution of his murder, and received a five-year sentence. She served 18 months of her sentence as a result of a plea bargain. Her lover, James H. Williams Sr. (January 15, 1939 – September 11, 2011), whom she married in 1986, was found guilty of two counts of capital murder involving the deaths of his previous wife, Sharon Williams (who died from what was originally thought to be an auto accident in 1983), and of Walter Scott. Police were told where to look for Scott's body by Williams' son, who was incarcerated at the time and did not get along with his father.

The case was documented on Court TV's Forensic Files (season 7, episode 1: "The Cheater"), HBO's Autopsy 3: Voices From the Grave, Secrets of the Morgue (episode: "The Wells Run Dry"), Oxygen's Exhumed: Killer Revealed (episode: "Murders on the Edge of Town"), and as part of The New Detectives: Case Studies in Forensic Science (episode: "Grave Discoveries").

On September 11, 2011, James Williams Sr. died at age 72 while serving his life sentence.

BUMP

I get to be the lead at the food pantry distribution this afternoon, and the lead gets to pick the music. Usually it's some mix of soul, Motown, pop, etc., or other low hanging fruit like the Beatles. I'm not going to put on, like, Autechre's NTS Sessions, but I'm thinking of putting this one on. The shift is around four hours or so. Do I start it from the beginning? Put it on shuffle?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 February 2025 18:51 (three months ago)

Your co-workers should be so fortunate to hear it either way

Josefa, Wednesday, 19 February 2025 19:21 (three months ago)

I might have to go with the '70s box, it's a bit more upbeat.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 February 2025 19:52 (three months ago)

Voted I'm Losing You, but I really like quite a few. Never heard original Mustang Sally before, so cool.

Went with the Temptations, but lots of great singles here.

My favourite song of the 60s won (tho I correctly guessed no one would vote for "Cool Jerk" so I gave it my vote instead)

Ended up going with the '70s box at the food pantry, where a lot of my cohort are at least 10 years older than me, and it was a big hit. But next time I might go '60s, I was worried there were too many slow songs, but maybe not.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 1 March 2025 00:06 (two months ago)

The Beg discs are the only two that are heavy on slow tracks.

The whole set programing is interesting, as it starts very slowly with the Soul Clan number, and six discs later ends with banger of bangers "Ain't Nothin' But A House Party"--a playlist construction opposite of every Club Soul Night I've ever been to.

Hey my uncle’s uncle (Wayne Bickerton) co-wrote the winning tune.

piscesx, Saturday, 1 March 2025 10:36 (two months ago)

two months pass...

Update: after cycling through a few different playlists at the food pantry, I got a request from a fellow volunteer to return to this box! So that's a win. Trying to think of some other crowd-pleasing but not necessarily obvious '60s (or '70s) soul collections or playlists...

fwiw, no one seemed into the '80s r&b box, or the reggae/ska covers of Beatles playlist. Many if not most of my co-volunteers are in their '60s or so, afaict.

Trying to think of some other crowd-pleasing but not necessarily obvious '60s (or '70s) soul collections or playlists...

The three volumes of Kent's Cellar of Soul series are terrific collections of what I guess you could call "B-Team" (non-Motown/Stax/Atlantic) '60s R&B, lots of obscure hits and cult faves. A natural next stop after this box.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 21 May 2025 16:00 (three days ago)

And of course there's a gazillion Northern Soul comps/playlists out there. A good "in" there is Sony/BMG's 4 "Northern Soul Story" club sets, which are available to stream.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 21 May 2025 16:05 (three days ago)

Good suggestions. From experience, the folks seem to react best to the songs they know best, of course, but sometimes hitting a similar vibe works just as well, plus because the songs are less familiar I am less likely to get sick of hearing them.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 May 2025 18:14 (three days ago)

Mojo did a few comps that could work (no idea if you can stream them)

also what about girl group comps

that's not my post, Wednesday, 21 May 2025 19:46 (three days ago)

A Spotify user made a near-complete playlist of Mod Scenester/DJ Randy Cozens' "Mod 100", which is a nice mix of Mod & Northern Soul, plus some Jazz & Ska/Bluebeat, with no doubling up of artists.

Rhino also did a 70's version of Beg Scream & Shout:

Wow, I never knew about that one! Let's start polling it next week...

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 May 2025 02:47 (two days ago)

It's got great packaging too--a box like a case of 8-tracks, and the 6 discs are little square "Ebony"-style magazine covers.

It didn't get as much notice as Beg Scream & Shout did, probably because about 80% of it is pulled from the 20 individual volumes of Rhino's "Soul Hits of the '70s" series.

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 22 May 2025 04:07 (two days ago)

All 20 volumes of the Rhino '70s soul volumes are collected on a comp/box called "Didn't It Blow Your Mind?", which I put on one day; it was a big hit. I also played the cheesier '70s "Have a Nice Decade" Rhino comp, which was also a hit, but sillier. I was thinking of putting on the "Ohmigod '80s set, but it's pretty (literally) hit or miss. I want to put on the "Just Can't Get Enough" volumes, but they might be too weird for a general audience of mostly older than me people.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 May 2025 04:21 (two days ago)

I miss all those Rhino boxes.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 May 2025 04:21 (two days ago)

On the girl group side, I've decided to create a Spotify playlist duplicating the four 90-minute mixtapes of girl group faves I made for myself in 1990.

I just added Tape 1, Side 1--out of 19 tracks, Spotify doesn't have 3 of them, so the original 148 song collection is going to be missing a chunk of choice obscurities.

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 22 May 2025 04:23 (two days ago)

Looking at pictures, I do remember that faux 8-track packaging from seeing it at the time, but didn't connect it with the genre (I probably thought it was some Classic Rock or vintage Pop collection). A big problem back then was that stores-particularly big box or chain stores- frequently only ever ordered one of those boxes, and once it was sold to someone else you were S.O.L. about seeing it again.

Lithium Just Madison (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 22 May 2025 04:40 (two days ago)

The '70s set tracklist is pretty sweet, although I do see they shied away from not doubling up on artists, which was a cool thing about Beg... as it really sold how deep the bench was in '60s R&B.

i have this one:
