What was the last great Madonna single?

I’m assuming it was “Hung Up” (coming up on 20 year anniversary) but I want dissenting opinions. Even if you think “Hung Up” itself wasn’t great.

Looking through here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_singles_discography - there's nothing I can recall hearing since "4 Minutes", which was 17 years ago. Maybe one of the singles since is good, maybe even great? Not going to put any money on it though.

it is "Hung Up" imo but i can't swear to hearing everything since

"Miles Away" for me; I've only heard a couple after that.

clemenza, Saturday, 15 February 2025 22:28 (nine months ago)

Probably "Don't Tell Me," though if I'm really being honest it might be "Ray of Light."

cryptosicko, Saturday, 15 February 2025 22:30 (nine months ago)

I don't even remember most of the singles from this century, so yeah, "Hung Up," because it really felt like, "Holy shit, she's actually still capable of making good records." But that was almost 20 years ago (released October 2005) and deliberately retro in sound and video...

Hung Up sounds amazing to this day. The bridge is the weakest part.

And the bridge is still good.

How can it be hung up if “sorry” and “get together” came out after …

ok (D-40), Sunday, 16 February 2025 03:00 (nine months ago)

yeah, I'd nominate "Get Together."

I really like “Joan of Arc” from 2014, which apparently wasn’t an official single but still charted. It’s not “Hung Up” good but it’s good. It’s low-key but catchy, like “Nothing Fails”.

4 Minutes was somewhat derided at the time, iirc - it feels like the official beginning of the end. But I enjoy it - it’s kind of like a Black Eyed Peas track, cheesy but it works. I used to play it at a Poptimism-type night in Canada in the 2000s, and it irritated some easily-irritated people that I enjoyed irritating, so I kept playing it.

(I guess the question is about “great” not “good” though. They’re both definitely not “great”.)

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 16 February 2025 16:44 (nine months ago)

Yeah, i was being a stickler about ‘great’ when I posted up thread. I remember liking some of the Confessions on a Dance Floor stuff, but I don’t know if she’s really produced anything I think of as Great since RoL: I’ve never been a fan of “Beautiful Stranger,” though some of the stuff on Music is, uh, borderline.

haha

the way i heard "crave" was through a filter disco remix (tracy young) that is better than it has any right to be - i got weirdly attached to it. the lyrics really match the way i feel about my relationships ("you're the one i crave, my cravings get dangerous" - i'm a cancer etc). i think madge and swae lee's voices are very well-matched. it's not great or anything as per above, maybe a bit of a snooze or a retread, and the original more trap-style song is kinda awkward. a few years ago i would play the tracy young mix out all the time to crickets lol.

The Confessions singles are capital-g-great, all of them.

Rebel Heart has a couple jams ("Ghosttown" gets stuck in my head), nothing essential.

Madame X has fucking weird moments that I'm glad a superstar thought was worth releasing. "Crave" is good too.

Are we occasioning a 21st Century Madonna listening thread?

The whole album is great, iirc (I haven't put it on for a while). It felt very effortlessly contemporary. Definitely her most consistent album-qua-album since "Ray of Light." Everything since "Confessions" has largely been a try-hard mess, imo, *all* effort and yet still falling short, just struggling for relevance. Though sure, I feel like "Madame X" was maybe trying for something different, even if I wanted none of it.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 16 February 2025 20:35 (nine months ago)

Madame X as a whole is surprisingly good tbh
